Eh? CGMs are quite invasive.
Glucose monitoring can be done via IR laser. Princeton has demoed w/ QCL (works well but expensive). Apple is probably investigating solutions that use two or three cheaper near IR frequencies.
Apple has multiple patents for this tech (use of lasers for mobile glucose monitoring).

I disagree that this will be a welcome addition. The USB Consortium and USB-IF come out with a new standard every other year. At least Apple provides some stability and long-term viability to their proprietary standards.

In the time period that Apple has had two mobile cable standards (Dock, Lightning), USB has had seven (Mini-A, Mini-B, Mini-AB, Micro-A, Micro-B, Micro-B SuperSpeed, and now Type C). So in approx 2003 to present, 15 years, USB averages a new plug type every other year. This is not a welcome addition. Most consumers don't want to buy new cables that often.

Even within USB-C, there is already a bunch of confusion because not all devices and not all cables support all the features of USB-C, such as PowerDelivery and AlternateMode. There is a newer "gen 2" spec that is supported sometimes. Thus, pairing USB-C cables to devices is actually quite confusing - there is no good way to know if a particular cable was made and tested to work with "gen 2" of USB-C.

I think this is most likely.

When these rumors talk about USB-C and iPad, everyone assumes it is the port on the iPad that will be changed to USB-C. No, it's the port on the charger that will be changed to USB-C, and the iPad will come with a USB-C to Lightning cable.

Call me stupid. But why do you need a USBC cable which then turns into a lightning cable to charge an iPad? Why don’t you just have a charger with a lightning cable and have it do the same thing? Where and why does USBC have to fit into it?

Confused.

Or maybe Jony Ive simply had the Airpods molded to his own ears and said "screw everybody else".

He designs Apple software and hardware to his personal "visionary" minimalist preferences, so why not the same for Airpods vs. his ear holes? :)

No, it wears battery out faster. 5W best for longevity.

No ,I would hate it.

Apple doesnt care about tiny margins like that. Lightning design is better than USB-C & smaller. Critical for iOS devices.

Tiny margins x a couple of million units a quarter they care about.

Most of you arguing about USB C vs Lightning and which you would prefer for the ipad have it wrong. There's a reason it would only be ipad and not iphone + ipad.

If they're adding USB C it's because they're pushing the ipad as a computer replacement and they want in on-par with the macbook. I wouldn't be surprised if the "air" successor was an ipad with keyboard case and usb C (basically a direct surface pro competitor)

I use a USB-C to Lightning cable and a 29w USB-C charger for my 2015 iPad Pro and it significantly reduces my charging time. Using a plain old 12w USB charger (USB to Lightning) is just painfully slow now, cannot stand it anymore.

Why not skip TouchID and adopt FaceID instead? The more FaceID sensors produced and the demand will only have the adoption increase for apps and Apple Pay. Why does it seem that on Mac hardware we are now getting TouchID and the forward thinking USB-C and on iOS devices we are getting FaceID and Lightening.

If Apple seems dedicated to FaceID, incorporate that into the Mac hardware as well. Oh I get it, that will be the eventual Mac hardware incorporation to urge users to upgrade. Way to milk the hardware features Apple.

Makes sense, but it probably won't come to the cheap MacBook first.

I find that AirPods fit perfectly in my ears, to the point that I often forget I'm wearing them. Of course Apple could—and they do—make headphones that stay in everyones ears; they just don't care when it comes to AirPods.

Are you saying that once you insert Airpods in your ears, they always stayed in the same spot several minutes later, and you never found yourself pressing on one or both Airpods in order to tighten them? Or if you did try pressing on the Airpods, they didn't budge?

Once I push the Airpods back into my ears, I found that outside noises became less apparent, and the sound from the Airpods was fuller. Then the sound quality changed a few minutes later because the Airpods loosened again...

Similarly, Apple will never make AirPods in any other color than white. Jony Ive wanted them to look and act and feel a certain way, and they do. And judging by their runaway success, I'd say that was the right call.

Classic case of confusing correlation with causality.

Think of history: Firewire 400 to Firewire 800 to 30-pin to Lightning. Throughout all of that, Apple could adopt the USB standards in place at the time.

Nope. "Firewire" is an Apple trademark, but the connector itself was an industry standard connector called IEEE1394. Other companies also had their own trademarked names for it, for example Sony calls it iLink, and Texas Instruments called it Lynx.

IEEE1394 wasn't just used by Apple, it widely used everywhere from camcorders to PCs. The digital video industry was absolutely awash with the connectors. I even had a home VCR and a TV tuner with these ports.

Apple was 1 of 10 companies getting royalties from IEEE1394, including Canon, Hitachi, Philips, LG, Panasonic, Samsung, Sony, STMicroelectronics, and Toshiba. So calling it "Apple proprietary" (like the 30-pin dock connector and Lightning connector) is quite misleading.

Frankly, Firewire was also way the heck better than USB. Never once did I wish my devices were using the significantly slower and weaker USB interface.

The only info missing is if Apple will release info about the ipad Pro this wednesday, guess we have to wait and see..I sure hope so still want to get in on the student beats headphones deal with an ipad pro purchase

The problem with designs like the AirPods is they are a single size item.
Everybody’s ears and canals are different sizes and shapes.
Heck, even one persons ears are not exactly symmetrical, that’s why in ear phones come with different size tips. One person may need a different size tip on each side for best fit and sound.
AirPods just don’t fit the bill. People say they sound great but I’ll stick with my PowerBeats 3. They sound great too and there’s virtually no chance of them falling out.

The vertical slit design of the Airpods ear tips shows 2 dimensional thinking while people's ear canals are 3 dimensional. That's why the round "mushroom" tips of other in-ear headphones (including that company named Beats) have better retention and sound isolation. Did Apple go with this vertical slit design just so they could make the case a few millimeters thinner?

The smooth plastic material of the Airpods is also not too good for ear retention. Couldn't they have made the tips with some silicone or rubberized material for better grip inside the ears?

I noticed that Amazon is selling aftermarket silicone coverings for the Airpods:

https://www.amazon.com/EarSkinz-Air...6618799&sr=8-3&keywords=airpods+silicone+tips

Problem with these is they don't fit inside the charging case. If people must resort to buying these in order to have Airpods that stay inside the ears, at least the case should be designed with some extra space inside to accommodate these accessories.

It doesn't, but I suppose it's the most convenient standard today that allows for high-amp charging and allows the same cable to be used for syncing with the new Macbook Pros.

In theory they could make the power brick have a lightning female port, and provide a male to male lightning cable, but that would be odd and useless for use as a sync cable.

Are you theorizing? Because from experience I can say that ear retention is excellent. I jog with Airpods and they don't fall out. I go to sleep with Airpods and 9 times out of 10 both Airpods are still in my ears in the morning.

In fact Airpods have been a radical improvement for me, especially jogging. Previously almost every kind of earbud would fall out due to the weight of the cord combined with motion and foot impact. If they had earhooks, sure, they wouldn't fall completely off, but they'd still pop out of my ears.

And Airpods are so light it's like I'm not wearing headphones at all...that's a great feeling when exercising. Having stuff bouncing around or weighing you down is a drag.

I can't think of a time I've ever been this satisfied with headphones. It's quite honestly one of the best purchases I've made in my entire life. My one complaint is that there's no quick and easy way to change the volume from the headphones themselves.

Just disappointed if Airpower and AirPods 2 aren't release in this event. I wait for a long time for those.

It does if they're pushing the iPads as a replacement for computers. But unless their file system (e.g. Files, Documents, etc.) supports reading mass storage devices, USB-C is not really that useful.

They included a MagSafe adapter with their display when they changed it way back in the day; I assume they could just throw another adapter in the box.

Being able to read external drives in the Files app would be great, but I think the other big advantage is adapters/cables. I have a MacBook Pro (USB C ) and a Surface Go (USB C) and an iPad Pro. I teach and I often have to plug into projectors in different rooms. It would be nice to only need to bring USB C adapters and not have to worry about bringing lightning adapters too.

I can put the AirPods in my ears, stretch and go run for an hour, and they won't have moved.

An ECG represents the vectors of electrical potentials generated by the heart and requires multiple leads for the electrical activity to be accurately recorded. Single lead ECG recorders are inaccurate and the resulting data can be misleading.

There's a challenge between adding stuff that will be helpful to people who wouldn't otherwise get an ECG done, vs dumbing down the accuracy for people who would otherwise get a multiple lead ECG done.

It's a conundrum.
I think overall I fall on your side ... people who really need tracking will do less despite knowing they shouldn't. But conversely I'm really not sure how many currently untracked people will get a benefit.

Yeah, I agree. The lack of easy connectivity is one of the iPad's weaknesses compared to something like the Surface.

There's also not the same space constraints that there are on the iOS devices. If the iPads go USB-C I'd say rather than USB-C coming to the phones, the phones are more likely to lose the port entirely and go entirely wireless, for better and worse.

I predict usb-c on iPad Pro is a misunderstanding and “all” that is happening is that a hi power, fast charging usb-c power supply and usb-c to lightning cable will come with them. Lightning port will remain.

I bought an Apple watch S3LTE SS and I'm really liking it except for the lack of watch faces and no built in EKG, but if the new one has built in EKG then I will think about changing. If I can get a decent price on my current watch I'll def do it.
