No, the Dock Connector was around longer than the current Lightning standard. The 30-pin Dock Connector was released in 2003. The Lightning connector was released in 2012. So the Dock Connector lasted 9 years, and the Lightning connector has been around for only 6.

Looking back I can't believe the 30 pin lasted all the way through from iPods to the iPhone 4S. Lightning to me feels like it's been around so much longer than it has.

They might as well not include a charger with the iPhones if it's going to be 5W again. I usually give them a break, but it is just pathetic at this point. Really hoping he's wrong.
Most people charge overnight so whether it takes an hour or 3 hours doesn’t really matter.

In any case there are rumors the X models will come with an 18W USB-C adapter, we’ll know tomorrow I suppose. Maybe the 6.1” LCD model still comes with the 5W.

I wish apple would just completely replace lightning with usb c, this will help push usb c to become the standard for all manufacturers much faster.

I wish they'd stop implying that an Apple Watch can do an EKG. It can't. With the addition of another lead on the opposite arm, it can at best generate a rhythm strip. This can show heart arrhythmias, but cannot tell you anything about coronary artery disease, or whether you are having a heart attack.

I agree, but for the caveat that I have very little confidence USB isn't going to release yet another new standard in a year or two. I bet Apple has the same hangup with it.

The simple problem is this, when one can walk into a dollar store and get an usb c cable you know full well their is no way Apple will sign off on this. A lighting cable cost 20 from the store, a third party cable at the cheapest might be 4/5 dollars. No way they give up a cash cow

You can buying lighting cables from the dollar store. How long they'll work for is another matter. Cheap USB-C cables have the same problem, poor quality and the potential to damage your device due to the standard of the cables being all over the place.

Also here in the UK I've never seen a USB-C cable in a pound shop. Cheap lightning cables however are everywhere.

Makes sense.

The iPhone is designed to have all day battery life (the jury is out on that one!) and to recharge (on a slow wireless charging pad) at night.

So a standard 5w charger is ok, because Apple wants you to use a charging pad - specifically their own one that they’re likely to announce tomorrow.

The iPad is becoming a pc replacement and with those large batteries, it needs a way of fast charging. Plus a way to connect to pc usb-c peripherals.

Now please Apple - announce a smart keyboard with a trackpad/mouse support next month and I’m buying an iPad Pro - I promise.

Half the time
MacBook with Touch ID? Lame why wouldn’t they switch them all to Face ID? That’s when I’ll buy a new MacBook.

Because FaceID is too expensive to put in a MacBook right now. It would also mean a T-series chip equivalent to the A11 Bionic that incorporates the dedicated neural network hardware used by the A11 for FaceID. Adding that feature would add another $150-$200 on to the end cost of what is supposed to be a value-oriented computer.

Apple will use the T1 in this new MacBook as the MacBook Pro has moved to the T2 and the R&D for the T1 has most likely paid for itself at this point.

It will be another 2-3 years before FaceID comes to the Mac lineup and it will start with the iMac Pro and Macbook Pro before moving downstream. You're looking at 4-5 years at this point, depending on whether Apple moves to A-Series CPUs for the Mac line.

5W plug again! lmfao

I'm done if they try that again, it's just pathetic and greedy.

Oh, no no... its gonna serve 5.5W. Don't worry, its a big upgrade.

what about the time when you end up using more power (like maps) and wanna charge? Still good old slow charging it is w 5w! FTW.

Did I make a mcsteak buying a set of Airpods for $80 yesterday?

$80 where? I bought mine yesterday from bestbuy $145. I have 45 days to return them. If new ones are announce I will rerun them once I get them or on the 44th day.

The USB forum might release another device side connector, although USB-C is quite small which makes it pretty much unnecessary, but they are not going to create another standard (lets call it USB 4.0) for quite a while, nor are they apt to create another client side connector (Type A/Type C), especially with Thunderbolt being tied to the Type C connector as well.

The only thing that is already in the pipeline, having been released in 2017, is the USB 3.2 update. I suspect it may sit around along with SATA Express because there is nothing really compelling that needs it at this point, that wouldn't be better served by Thunderbolt 3, especially if Intel follows through on its promise to make the specification royalty-free. I guess we will see.

Unless Apple has found a way to make USB C more resilient than it currently is, they need to stick to lightning. 2 of the ports on my partner's 2017 rMBP 15 are already loose. My 2016 rMB 12's lone USB C port is also is very loose and has to be fiddled with to stay connected. Yes, I've bought new cables from Apple store and Amazon to see if it's the cable only. I MISS MAGSAFE! Meanwhile, my almost 4 year old ipad air 2 and my much more used work iphone 7+ lightning ports are still working great. The endurance on USB C is much worse than lightning in my experience

USB-C is small, but noticeably larger than Lightning.

I really doubt Apple is going to change iPads from Lightning to USB-C.

Besides the fact that there isn't really any good reason for the change, the USB-C plug is larger than Lightning, and Apple is obsessed with using the smallest components possible.

It’s a really good point. The usb-c socket size is probably not going to be possible with the thickness (or lack of) of the iPad Pro.So maybe we’re getting lightening to usb-c charging.

Yeah I was being ironic about the iPhone having an ‘all day battery charge’!

Even though we know it’s not true, Apple wants you to believe that it is and that at the end of the day, you’ll put down your iPhone (at 21% power, no need for battery reserve!) onto your Apple AirPower charging mat.

Drink in the marketing.

USB-C is small, but noticeably larger than Lightning.

Which is why I said, "The USB forum might release another device side connector...", because it is a possibility, although I think the vast majority of Android accessories would opt to use the USB Micro-B connector for now, as opposed to petitioning for a new, smaller "Micro USB-C" connector, given that Micro-B is already incredibly widespread and is a mandated connector in the EU, among other things.

So while the device side has ~6-7 different connectors at this point, the flip side is that the client end (computer) connector is limited to just the Type-A and the Type-C and I do not see that changing for a very long time.

Gently used. I couldn't bring myself to pay $171 (after tax at Target) for them. From what I understand, the new ones will offer "Hey Siri" and possibly some noise cancellation.

I want the rapid charger included in the iPhone Xs box. It's ridiculous that it's not already there.

...good job that phones have got larger since Lightning came out, then :) Seriously, if a tablet is too thin to accommodate a USB-C socket then its probably just too thin (I mean, the camera lens already sticks out on the iPad Pro... making it any thinner is getting stupid). For ultra-thin phones, I guess the next step will be to go all-wireless and not to have any ports.

However, what about the size of the sockets? In Lightning the socket contacts are "outside" the plug whereas in USB-C they go "inside" the plug - so maybe the difference in the size of the sockets is smaller than the difference in the plugs?

Also, USB-C has twice as many data lanes as Lightning - which won't have enough pins to support the forthcoming USB 3.2 standard - or if they're going to further pro-ify the iPad then things like 4k video output or Thunderbolt may be an issue.

I use a USB-C to Lightning cable and a 29w USB-C charger for my 2015 iPad Pro and it significantly reduces my charging time. Using a plain old 12w USB charger (USB to Lightning) is just painfully slow now, cannot stand it anymore.

But why does USB anything have to be part of the equation? Why can't it just be a charger? With a lightening cable end?

You can. But USB adds two conveniences: (1) modularity and (2) syncing.

(1) If something breaks, you can replace just the cable or just the power adapter. If it was both in one, you would need to replace both for more cost.
(2) If the power adapter and cable are separate and attached via USB, then you can use the same cable to sync the device to a computer easily. Or charge it from a computer. If it was both in one, you would have to buy a separate sync cable to do that.
