You sound like a Apple Fan boy yes man. Not everyone loves everything Apple does.

I am looking at this in a new light....

If this was the first iPhone, would I be thrilled to pick up a device that did all that the iPhone does for $199 if I had to pay $85/month....I think so.

Yup. But the so called FASTER INTERNET is not. You have to pay extra for that. I m not taking into account anything else but this line. Otherwise I can easily argue that this is what AT&T charges for all its 3G data plans. But its this one line advert from apple which makes you think you are getting the twice faster bandwidth while only paying half as much. Which certainly not the case. Hence the reason I think this one line is very very misleading if not exactly a Lie.

What jobs said was technically true, the phone is in fact half the price and it can browse the web at twice the speed. He never claimed that the data charges were half the price did he?

I think this half the price argument is silly, but I cant help but to chime in:D

If SJ wanted to be truthful, he would have compared the original iphone price (unsubsidized) with an unsubsidized 3G iphone (not the 199 with a contract).

He's comparing apples and oranges here. I could walk out of the store spending 500 for a an EDGE iphone and do whatever I please. How much would it cost me to do that with the 3G iphone?

I think the demand will still be there. But I think a lot of current owners were underwhelmed and will just be updating software rather than upgrading to the newer device.

AT&T never sold the EDGE iPhone without the intent of the owner having to agree to a new AT&T contract in order to activate the phone.

So if you walked out of the store with an EDGE iPhone, unless you hacked the activation yourself, the only "official" way to get your new EDGE iPhone activated was to sign up for a 2-year AT&T contract.

So the original price was $599 (with a contract)
then dropped to $399 (with a contract)
and now it's $199 (with a contract).

It's not an issue of oil prices vs. Apple stock. It's oil prices vs. ALL stocks. When oil rises, most stocks fall, that's just how it is, and like other have stated, has been for decades. If oil dropped to $120 barrel today (unrealistic, I know), you can bet that most stocks, would see a significant jump to go along with it. The days the market is up are the days the price of oil falls. Just look at the pattern over the last month if you don't believe it. Apple's stock falling has very little to do with the iPhone.

Only recently has the price of oil and stock market prices been tied together... it's happened before, but it's definitely not a "decades long" thing. For years wallstreet had no reaction to oil prices... (read on)

What's changed is inflation. Don't forget the price of oil doubled from $40 a gallon to $80 a gallon all the while wallstreet was booming and flirting with 14,000 points... Wallstreet seemed all but oblivious to rising oil until this year. Now that inflation has gone nuts (thanks to our stinking rookie fed), investors are buying oil and ditching stocks. So for the time being they're tied, but eventually wallstreet will forget about oil (again). Chew on this:

in Oct 2007 the average for the DOW was 13,930. That same month oil was $70 a barrel... nearly triple what it was in September 2003 when the DOW averaged at 10,000. By everyone's logic in here that shouldn't of happened, but it did. Oil is not the only factor in stock prices.

Point is this: oil and stocks are not always tied together... they usually only go hand in hand when inflation is bad.

I don't recall anyone being obligated to sign a contract at point of sale

So the original prices was $599 (no contract)
then dropped to $399 (still no contract)
and now it is $599 (no commitment option released today)

Looks like the intent you described is still there but the price has remained unchanged or more expensive depending on how you look at it
