Let me start by start by saying I always like my text size as small as possible on my phone- I like fitting the most content possible on the screen.

That being said, I feel like the app icons themselves on the homescreen feel more blown up (like how my grandma has her setting) on the XS Max. And yes I have Standard Zoom display on, not the larger one. I had the 7 Plus prior and the app icon sizes felt smaller on that device.

Does anyone else feel the same or are my eyes playing tricks on me?

It's way oversized.. like iPad icon size.. it looks silly and wastes an incredible amount of space.. I held it next to my Note 9.. same size display and the home screen shows so much more..

You can really tell how big the icons have become by going to settings->display & brightness->display zoom, and toggle back and forth between zoomed and standard. Notice how there’s hardly any difference? It used to be night and day difference. Zoomed was huge and standard was normal.

We’re all stuck on zoomed now.

I 100% agree with all of this. It's bizarre because when I have Safari open, I LOVE the screen size. When I have iMessage open, I LOVE the screen size. But when I go to the home screen, a little part of me dies haha

I played with the Max in store for about 5 minutes. Fully agreed on maxing out that real estate when opening apps like Safari, Messages, Books, etc. Really was a thing of beauty seeing how much could be displayed on the screen within those apps. However the home screen I didn't pay much attention to, though I can absolutely see your point there. I hope we see some springboard refresh or redesign in iOS 13 (like was rumoured).

I think this could be because the plus iPhones render their displays as 414x736 points @3x - creating an image of 1242x2208 resolution, crucially, this is then interpolated to a lower resolution (1080p) display. With the XS max, it renders 414x896 points @3x, but as the resulting image is 1242x2688 there doesn't need to be any downsampling so the image doesn't appear smaller, it's displayed at size.

Bigger screen and bigger icons? Not sure why it’s a surprise..been the same on normal and plus phones from the start

Nope - display zoom would make them bigger. On plus phone you would have an entire extra row of icons if you chose "normal" and not "zoomed." On this phone the homescreen doesn't change between those two options, only inside of apps. Everyone gets the "zoomed" home screen now.

Hopefully iOS 13 will bring changes to the homescreen after all these years to make this a moot point, but we still have a year till that helps.

Display zoom does make them bigger. Not by a big difference but you can tell

Have you ever seen the homescreen on iPad 12.9? In Safari there’s a major difference though. Apple is doing the same thing with Max. I think it’s logical and like it.

Yeah this looks horrible on the iPhone Xs Max. I really hope they fix the home screen issue soon.
There’s no ”issue”—it’s how it’s supposed to be and will probably stay.

They don’t take a 640x480 desktop and zoom it on bigger, higher resolution Macs. Silly to do it on the phones.

Why is zooming rather than putting more info on the larger screen “logical?”

Exactly. I don’t know how people can’t understand this.

^Honestly, I don't think its a big deal at all. And I'm someone who appreciates the technical details behind these displays and loves the additional real estate.

It doesn't looks like the home screen is just blown up. The icons are bigger, but there's also more space between the icons.

It sounds like the only complaint you have is that the home screen has the same grid layout of apps (7 rows across including the dock). Is that correct? Would you prefer more icons on the home screen or maybe a re-thought springboard?

I don’t really need another row of apps, I just want the apps themselves to not be as large as they are. As others have stated, toggling between zoom display and non-zoom display barely makes a difference- which means the app icons themselves are larger on this device than they are on the Plus models. That makes me feel like I am using my grandma’s iPhone with all the elements blown up.
