I just browsed the app store for the first time. I do not have a touch or iphone. My worry is I would be like Lisa simpson where she has to travel to the Mapple undersea headquarters and ask Steve Mobs for some decency to credit some of her purchases because she cannot afford to pay for them all.

Now that I seen the app store, can taste the possibilities of such a device, I want one bad. to think what I still do manually, or have multiple devices (livescribe pen [ok no one can top that], macbook, palm cell phone [sorry MS office documents and copy/paste are necessities], etc).

Maybe it is a good thing I did not get my wish of a MSI WIND or Gigabyte
M912x for Christmas. Fall would just seem to far....

Your close, but no cigar. This is what I have in mind:

ok, ok, so you found a better markup of what I was thinking.

just made this up for fun :apple: pce

now, I like the port configuration on the above (2 USB's, audio/mic., magsafe, and video to hook to a screen/projector) - there you go all the ports to slide into an imac dock.

Well this was a change from their plans. App store totally made them drop one product and create another. Here's where the iPod can reinvent computing and gaming again. I hope when its on standby mode it becomes :apple:iFrame.

All apple has to do is to drop iPod Classic and iPod Nano to start revolution.

OSX is supposed to be Resolution independant I think with Snow Leopard. Couldn't they scale it up?

Ummmm....

The article states it'd use the App Store. That sort of implies that it would run iPhone OS.

Oh and a correction the article states 7-9" screen. I could not IMAGINE using a display with 480x320 pixels and 9" in size. That would be AWFUL!!

Now, if someone could mockup these two together, the actual tablet being inserted into the dock, THAT I would buy!!

Full Mac OS X, 9" screen, multi-touch, and onscreen keyboard. Sure, you can't touch-type, but I'm a two-finger typist anyway, as much of the world, so that wouldn't be an issue for most with hitting more than one key at a time.

Now, if this has a decent resolution for the size, THAT WOULD BE AWESOME!

iPhone OS is OSX modified. Obviously if Apple were to choose larger screens, Resolution independence would be needed.

Check out the Patent. Apple is the one who came up with the idea. The MockUp is someone's.

that mock up is huge, scaled down you may have a possibility I would think more netbook size.

if the price will be right (~$300-$400) it could be an Apple's answer to netbooks...

thats what i think it should be, if they could get something in that price range at that size, it might compete too much with the ipod touch, but who knows the iphone sure didn't hurt the ipods sales

I would buy it in a hearbeat:). I read japanese manga most of the time and using the sony e-reader 505 is hurting my eyes after a long read.

Double that and your in the ballpark.

The only way it'll reach $400 is if Apple is counting on the AppStore to subsides (sp?) the device. Even less likely is a subsidy based on a wifi internet.

To get the price low, I can see Apple having a tablet and a dock like the one I posted above. Sell them separately instead of together. That would bring the tablet into the $799 range.

8 or 9" Tablet screen @ 1280×1024 w/ resolution independence to scale current apps to reasonable resolution
Dock @ 24"
Atom equivalent + Something to give it more power in the Dock (GPU acceleration or another processor [grand central])
64Gb SSD (a standard HD in the dock for Time Machine and more storage)
2GB Ram + 2gb when Docked
Optical Drive on the Dock
2 USB on the device and 4 on the Dock
Magsafe on the Dock on the left slide so it can charge in the Dock.

"We don't know how to make a $500 computer that's not crap." - Steve Jobs

This makes me think one of two things, he was just really playing with all of us and they'll sell it for $500, because its not necessarily a computer (you get it). Or this will sell for around $600-700. The latter to me is more likely as something that costs $300-500 is way too close to the top end touch. Thoughts?

To all those who can't visualize a use for an ~8" screen device... where have you been the past few years?

Current web tablets (e.g. Nokia 8xx) sell pretty well.
It's an okay size for reading e-Books.
Good for iChat / etc around the house.
Ditto for remote TV display.
For trekkers... just think PADD.

As for using current iPod touch applications... I'd think that they'd simply run inside a window on the screen, optionally zoomed.

(The same technique could be used for an Apple answer to the HP TouchSmart kitchen computer... but instead of HP Tiles, you could flick between little iPhone windows, each with an app inside it. If only Apple had supported widgets on the iPhone, as we all had thought at first.)

Re: industrial use. Flat touch devices with ~7" screens have been around for years, running Windows CE etc in warehouses and hospitals. Nothing new there.

iTablet, here I come!. Need a 9 inch screen with 1280X800 resolution, potentially a good PA Semi PPC processor @ 1Ghz (dual core, iMissile chip!), 120GB HDD (i does not need blazing speed, not that it has any, even Atom 330 is not that fast). Full bluetooth implementation please!. Need wireless keyboard to work!. My main note-taking device and great audio recorder. I want to take notes and record audio at the same time!. With a web session going in the background.:apple::apple::apple:

 Sweet! Can I preorder one now??!!! :D :D :D

If it runs OS X, it would be totally awesome if it had some sort of emulator to run iPhone/iPod touch apps ;)

This is the closest I have seen to what Apple will probably come out with. At least it doesn't look fake compared to what I have seen. All it needs is a new name, MacBook Touch.

I like the design, but where are the FireWire 800, eSATA, InfiniBand and FibreChannel ports??!!! :D :D :D

How Bout this one?

apple_tablet.jpg

I'm not so fond of the keyboard or of the clickwheel. However, seeing how such a device could benefit from Snow Leopard, we just might see a quasi-iphone OS/10.6-ish? Now, that'd be sweet on this MacTouch. :apple:

I mean it's inevitable, its just when Apple is going to cash in and drop their new product to compete in the market. Netbooks are getting popular... plus they're cheap.

RE: pricing.

What if they build in a 3G modem for data? Sell it at Apple stores with no contract for ~$1000, or subsidized for ~$500. Let's face it, this device would be far more useful if you had internet on it wherever you went.

Add in some Bonjour software, so that when you walk into a restaurant with it, it beams the menu right to your device, and you've got a fantastic piece of equipment.
