I have no need of this. I probably couldn't afford it safely. I already have an iPod Touch and a PowerBook.

Yet I feel strangely drawn to it, like a moth to a lightbulb. WOULD BUY

And again I am the same person. Got iMac, which I dont use cause is G5 and thats piss me off. Then I got MBP and we "share" it or rather fighting for it instead of use it my wife ThinkPad from work, but she says its ugly windows there and won't handle ebay shopping well.
Thinking now about MacBook Air for her or maybe that tablet but depends on what will be capable of. But one way or another true statement:
"..I feel strangely drawn to it, like a moth to a lightbulb. WOULD BUY"

...The PSP ? It's already dead.
I think you are ignoring just how huge the videogame market has become.
These are the latest sales figures I could find...

The top-selling game consoles for November 2008, according to the NPD:
1. Wii: 2.04 million
2. Nintendo DS: 1.56 million
3. Xbox 360: 836,000
4. PSP: 421,000
5. PlayStation 3: 378,000
6. PlayStation 2: 206,000

When a console, the PSP, is able to sell nearly half a million units in one month in North America alone, I for one, wouldn't declare it dead.
I'm still amazed though, that MS are willing to bleed serious amounts of money for every single 360 they sell.

UPDATE: Just found some way better sales figures. Global. "Interactive". Play around VG Hardware Sales Comparison Charts

has anybody here tried the modbook? I'm just curious to know what it's like and if the screen is as responsive as the iPhone/iPod Touch

It seems to me that this product could become the ultimate Apple device.
Think of it as a combination portable Apple TV/e-book reader/gaming machine.

*No DVD player...tie it into iTunes movie rentals
*Apple finally delving into the gamer's world, at least portable devices.
*an e-book reader to take on the Kindle, although the Kindle wins because of the e-ink they utilize.
*netbook style web-device
*more App development and sales $$$

It's not just an iPod Extreme...but a whole new market.

will they tie it into AT&T subscriptions to help subsidize the cost?

I don't think it would make sense to call it an iPod anymore considering all the things it would do. What are they going to call it iPod Touch Tablet or iPod Touch Nano (that is if they are making one)?
The iTunes name doesn't make sense anymore. But it has become such a strong brand name, that it's understandable why they're sticking with it.
The iPod name is far more flexible though as it doesn't dictate the focal point of the device. It's just a pod.

A 7-9" screened NetBook with MacOS would be amazing...the MacBook Nano or MacBook Web

The touch screen element wouldn't bother me as much as the inclusion of a keyboard (although Apple could possible have it dual screened light the Nintendo DS for example.

I would love something along the lines of the Samsung NC10 netbook but Apple made and running MacOS...

Roll on 2009!!!

quad core touch screen macbook touch pro idea would be nice. the design will be the issue. how do you have a keyboard and touch screen in the same device? if apple can solve this in 'designed in california' style it will be a winner

I'm still amazed though, that MS are willing to bleed serious amounts of money for every single 360 they sell.

They don't. The 360 was designed to a cost and to make a profit early in it's production - hence a lot of the reliability issues with the console. The original xbox never made a profit in any of it's 13 revisions, likewise Sony are still loosing money on each ps3 even with the recent 33% reduction in costs.

'Large Screen iPod Touch Device' in Fall of 2009?

When the Newton was intro'd in Boston I saw several Apple engineers carrying what looked like 8.5" x 11" tablet computers. Never saw anything like them since (although I loved the Newton); perhaps these tablets have finally been uncovered in some Cupertino closet.

Why would I spend over $700 for a larger ipod touch when I will soon be able to plug my ipod touch into a $100 8"-10" screen/keyboard and surf the web, type documents, etc.

Deaf love Video-conferencing

I can see the widespread use of this if this has a data only plan along with high quality video conferencing. Deaf people will definitely buy it and use it.

Its about time. Everyone has been wanting one of these since the newton was axed.

I hope this is the reason I let my 12" powerbook go. It seem like the times were catching up to it, but I sure do miss it. I think about it alott. Why couldn't that frigging air have been a 12" screen and had firewire? why oh why?

So anyways, this seems like it would fit in nice between our iphone and mac's when we are away.

I'm also curious what people think of the modbook. It looks really nice but it is just so expensive for something that has the potential of losing its value rather quickly.

if it is true that the new device will be compatible with the apps from app store despite its larger screen, then i guess there won't be an issue for apple to introduce an iphone nano either.

I guess, they will put to use the patent they applied for few months back that would allow an application to be displayed properly on the screen regardless of its size..

Sign me up. Watch tv (Hulu, etc) on it in bed. Dock it in the kitchen to watch tv/surf the web.

Surprise surprise. Another upcoming keynote means yet another tablet rumor. <yawn>

This is Apple's "Fake Rumor Department" hard at work. I'm sure they've even worked up a couple decent fake prototypes to "leak". It's their favorite inside joke after all.

How many times are we going to fall for this? Seriously?

Haha. Boy would I love to be around when some of the nay sayers and haters are first in line waiting for one. Lol its on the way folks, just speculate and enjoy. :D

We Can Only Hope!...

This would be awesome, i would definately purchase this, either a tablet mac with ipod touch abilities built in...or an tablet mac which can be connected to an ipod touch sort of like just a larger screen....after all the ipod touch IS a "video game system"-at least that is apples hope.

i saw something similar to this in January's issue of Mac life magazine, in an article attempting to predict "apples next big thing".

Not with the price point that we all know it will have. >$300 USD

I kinda disagree with both of u, first off i dont believe it will "KILL" the ds or the psp. but i do however think that both nintendo and sony have something to worry about and definately need to be paying attention or the do risk the ds and the psp becoming out done by the ipod touch

if apple were to release this, it would probably have its own GUI layer over mac os x. the iphone does it. Besides, os x running on a macbook/imac/macpro is designed to be mouse operated, which definitely would not be the most efficient way to operate on a multitouch tablet.

furthermore, the form factor would have to allow decent typing. i think that holding the device portrait-wise would allow for a keyboard a little bit bigger than the iphone's landscape version. that in my opinion would be terrific for thumb-typing.

i'm looking forward to this device, although i wouldn't hold my breath for it.
