I wrote a bit of nonsense on this here.

Agreed that there shouldn't be much cannibalization. The MBP 16 is a chunky, relatively undesirable machine even if money was no object to customers.

Personally, I don't think there will be explosive demand for 15-inch simply due to the large footprint. If there were, Apple wouldn't need to wait 15 years deciding whether give a green light. But it's a new market Apple can tap into once the wave of M1 excitement subsides.

Exactly why somewhat skeptical. This could seriously cannibalize the mpb16. Bet there will not be much price difference between mba15 and mbp16 entry level. Sure would mean more laptop sales for Apple though.
Uh, what your saying makes zero sense. This will not cannibalize sales of the 16” MacBook Pro one iota. I don’t need a 16” MacBook Pro, I have a 27” loaded iMac and an M1 13” MacBook Pro. When the iMac moves on, I will move to a Mac Studio with 24” and 27” displays and I would love to move to a 15” Air for the extra screen real estate. I’m not about to move to a 16” MacBook Pro just to have that larger screen and an extra $1,000 cost to get that extra screen size. Screw that, and Apple knows this. They know there’s pent up demand for this screen size and they've waited until the natives have become restless enough.

I suspect a 15” MacBook Air will start at $1499 for an 8/512, which translates to $250 for the size move from the equivalent 13” to 15”. The 16” MBP starts at $2,499. There’s no way the 15” MBA is going to start anywhere close to that price. For that $2499 price, you’ll probably be able to get the 15” MBA at 16GB/2TB SSD, and $2899 for a 32GB/2TB SSD, depending on whether the M2 supports 32GB DRAM.

Apple will sell a boatload of these.

Oh ffs. this would be the perfect computer for me. And I was just getting ready to buy a 14 base pro this summer. Grumbles. Guess I’ll wait

Using my Intel MacBook Pro for one more year then I'm jumping to the 15-inch MacBook Air like my ass is on fire. Cannot wait. Goodbye unneeded bells and whistles of a large-screen MacBook Pro.
It'll be highly priced, don't think for a second Apple will do you a favour and price it fairly. They're not your friend. What's likely to happen is that it'll be gimped to the point that it'll make more sense to just throw extra cash on the MacBook Pro.

This 15-inch product could start at over $1,500. If Apple sells twice the number compared to 16-inch, they could make up for any cannibalization.
Perhaps this is a bit odd thought, but I always felt as mobile products go up in size they becomes less usable in the real world.

Examples were the older 17" MBP from years back, the rumor of iPads larger than 12.9", and yes this 15" MBA.

Right now I see the MBA/MBP13 as ideal for being in a airport or coffee shop setting. There was a lot of discussion about the 14" vs 16" MBP and what is easier to work with on travel. The thought of how awkward a 15" iPad Pro would be with two hands also was discussed. So while people that don't want to spend the money on a $1999 MBP fantasize about a 15" MBA, would it really be that great to use given how compact the current model is for carrying around?

If we assume that the 15" has to weigh more for a larger battery to drive a 15" screen, additional weight if it involves a 500 nit display over a 400 nit display. The cost is going to go up and it's going to be getting close to MBP pricing. Given the upselling of the Mac Studio tactics I wonder if even with the demand whether the negatives outright the positives in this rumor?

Finally! This should replace the 13” MBP. Now they just need a $749-$799 MacBook SE and the lineup will be perfect.
I'd be pleasantly surprised but Apple seems to be allergic to dipping below 999 at the floor of their standard laptop lineup.

Now watch this new display turn out to be for a 15" iPad Pro...

Still, hope it is a MacBook Air because it would be an insta-replacement for my 14" MacBook Pro if it has MiniLED.
A 15 inch iPad Pro would be a Day One, Instant Buy for me. As would a 32 inch iMac. I really like expansive screen real estate.

So basically we're gonna have 13, 14, 15 AND 16" displays?
Sounds very stupid economically-wise.
I think Apple should keep 3 sizes top, so perhaps 12, 14 and 16 inches.
12" would make a Mac incredibly portable (as portable as the old 11" macbook air).
As far as my personal wishes are concerned these sizes should be available for both "low-end" and high-end products.

I agree the 15-inch form factor won't be a really portable computer. If it were, Apple wouldn't need to hem and haw for so many years. In the PC world, 15-inch models tend to be desktop replacements.

There's probably a group of customers who grudgingly purchase MBP 14/16 for the display size and this 15-inch model would fill that gap. While the 15-inch will have a lower ASP than MBP, the higher margins at say $1,699 would more than make up for the decreased MBP volume.
