Why are some people assuming it’ll be some expensive XDR display?

Check out the 15-inch MacBook Air. It’ll probably based on the same idea. A reasonable display paired with a mid-range processor.
a MBA is entry level - would a 32" iMac be entry level? I don't think so.
What's the market for 32" displays? 32"iMac?

Indeed. It will simply be a 60hz 6K IPS panel.

The Pro Display XDR is a 1600 nit FALD display. Most mainstream users don't need this.

And personally, I'd rather have it be a 5.5K-ish display.
I get that, but look at the 5k market, 3 or 4 options after how many years?

And, the Dell 6k display sells for what, 2200 US$ (it's not on par with the XDR) or so? add a Mx processor and other needed parts to make that an iMac and you're well above $3k, more like $3.5k entry price - what is the market for that?

The 13-inch M1 is entry level. The 15-inch is a couple steps up. Everybody’s looking for a 27- or 32-inch display these days except those with no space.

the screen alone will be more than 2200. I think this machine will start at 6 grand if it launches.
I'm in denial, but I suspect you are right. This is especially true if its supposed to be a successor to the iMac Pro. Apple will just say we are giving you more performance for less money, ie. Mac Pro. I just wish the company could recognize that sweet spot between value and affordability. Many just want a bigger display. For me, it would mean downsizing from 3 displays to just the iMac, 13 inch MacBook Pro and my iPad.

Dell’s 6K monitor has a Thunderbolt 4 dock built-in with a fancy height adjustable + pivot stand + 4K webcam. It has comparable I/O to the Mac Studio. It’s also priced high because it’s the only 6K in the world. An iMac will have much high economies of scale and integration.

Apple can easily sell such a 6K iMac for $2,500 in a couple years.

It is the market of the iMac Pro.

The Intel iMac Pro started at $4999 and that was for a 27” display.

If there was crazy demand for the larger iMac then Apple most likely would have had it out by now. The prospect this larger iMac is still a year or more away leads me to suspect demand for it isn’t all that great beyond the fanbase on MacRumors.

You think they can, but will they? Ok, let’s revisit this in 2025

Exactly, the point is it is NOT on par with the Pro XDR, so it can be sold for way, way cheaper. It's a 6K display that retails for US$2399 but which can be purchased on sale for under $2200. The Pro XDR's 1600 nit display consumes a lot of energy and heats up significantly, requiring a heavily ventilated design to compensate, and most users don't need or even want that. A 600 nit non-HDR display makes a lot more sense, esp. if Apple were forego the 218 ppi spec and release something like 5.5K at closer to 200 ppi (which is still "Retina").

As for an iMac, it'd have to be more expensive, yes, but certainly not anywhere near Pro XDR pricing. The Pro XDR is a low volume high end niche product, like the Mac Pro.

I will hear you all cry when you hear the price. My guess is the starter option for about 3500/3800. Or if it’s 2025 it will be 3999.

And to be honest, I would not buy an all-in-one Mac ever again. Much better to be independent and can by Mac and display separately.
