I think they should combine the Mac Studio and Studio Display into one device to become a new all in one with a new name while keeping the separate options available as well. This would keep the iMac as a consumer device while providing a new pro all in one.

Why the delay? This does not need extensive testing. The reason is they don’t want to canabalise the sales of Studio Display/Mac Mini combo which costs more. (Here is Oz the Studio Display alone is almost as expensive as the 27in 5K iMac used to be). So they will milk that for a bit longer before releasing it.

95% of consumers simply want an elegant all-in-one solution with a larger 27" screen.
The base M series & Pro SoCs are more than adequate for the vast majority of ordinary consumers.

All you Pro's (photo & video editors or content creators) already have your needs met by:

Mac Mini / Studio + Apple Studio Display
or
Mac Studio + Pro Display XDR.

We the regular people (internet browsing, media consuming, office productivity and Zoom users) are all well served by the base M SoCs.

There is zero need to add a Max or Ultra SoC's to a larger iMac except to drive up the already prohibitively expensive product for the majority of users.

Pro moniker loving creatives clamoring for more horsepower already have their needs served.... They have tons to choices already available. Cough up the cash and quit whining. Don't ruin it for the rest of us - the frugal majority - who don't need more cores, GPUs, codecs, ports, neural engines, encoders/decoders ect.

Good to hear that a bigger iMac might be eventually released. Would like to see a non Pro version of it also. A simple screen size increase with a price tag of $1999

That price seems extremely optimistic.

I was guessing US$1999 just for a 30-32" display, with no built-in desktop computer.

So, I'd guess a 30-32" iMac would only be "Pro", beginning with 16 GB RAM and 512 GB storage, and priced considerably higher than US$2000.

Not really, considering the US$1599 27" Apple Studio Display is not 10-bit either.
That's because Apple Studio used an old 5K panel which 27 inch iMac already used a while ago. Such a bad example. That's clearly overpriced as well.

8-bit panels are par for the course in this space. 10-bit panels are far less common.

The vast, vast majority of creatives work on 8-bit FRC panels.

Apple is experimenting with larger iMacs, including a model with around a 32-inch display, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. In his latest Power On newsletter, Gurman said these iMacs are still in early development, so he does not expect them to launch until late 2024 or at some point in 2025 at the earliest.

Gurman previously said Apple was developing a larger iMac with over a 30-inch display, and he has now specified that the display will be around the same 32-inch size as Apple's high-end Pro Display XDR monitor. Released in December 2019, the Pro Display XDR has 6K resolution for Retina-quality content and starts at $4,999.

Apple discontinued the Intel-based 27-inch iMac and iMac Pro over the past few years, and has yet to launch a larger-screen iMac with an Apple silicon chip as a replacement. Instead, Apple offers the 27-inch Studio Display, which can be connected to the Mac Studio or another Mac with Apple silicon, but this is not an all-in-one solution like the iMac.

For now, the 24-inch iMac is the only all-in-one computer sold by Apple. The current model with the M1 chip was released in April 2021, and Gurman expects an updated model with a faster M3 chip to launch by early next year. All current Apple silicon chips are manufactured based on TSMC's 5nm process, while the M3 chip is expected to move to a 3nm process for significant performance and power efficiency improvements.

My wife is currently using a 2009 27" imac and is looking for a replacement as the next edition of the software package she uses (she's a lawyer) will probably require a version of the OS that her mac no longer supports. Plus there's always the possibility that her iMac might fail. She needs a large screen as her application software is basically a dashboard showing multiple aspects of the cases she is working with. Her application isn't compute intensive, it's real estate intensive and the 24" screen is too small.

IMV Apple is ignoring a large group of similar professionals who would love a larger imac at mid-range pricing and would leap at the chance of getting one.

Nice, but I'm not going to pay what they will be asking I'm sure. $2799 with 8gb ram? maybe $2499 if you're lucky?

lol, and those vast major of creatives work on 8-bit FRC panels aren't even professional. Beside, there are quite a lot of 10 bit monitors in this day. BenQ is a great example. 8bit FRC on expansive monitor is already a joke. Also, 10 bit is better show why not? Is it really hard to justify that? What a joke.

I enjoy the forum discussions on this one.

Ignoring the people are just asking for a 27" iMac, it feels like we have approximately two contingents. People either expect/want:

(1) the same tech as the Studio Display, built like an M* <null> base model, starting at $2000-$2500

or

(2) new modern tech screen, built like a Mac Studio, starting at $5000-$6000

... and really, either of those, or something in between, could happen. Personally I would bet on (2); but really, without knowing more of the requirements, all we have are guesses :)

I kind of feel a little bit scammed because last year Apple executives in follow-up interviews said there are no plans to do a larger screen iMac and 27” iMac users should buy the Studio instead. I bought the studio and studio display but much prefer the minimalist all-in-one setup of an iMac.
The chin kills your minimal setup 😅

I prefer how clean the Studio Display looks, the mini or studio don't take too much space on the desk. IMO only the 24 iMac should exist, for regular users or scholars. Also you can exchange the mini or studio or mbp and keep to monitor for years. Overall I pass on any iMac!

Other than fleecing the consumer of their money, there was absolutely no reason why Apple could not put the iMac internals into a Studio Display.

Given Apple's current Mac desktop and display lineup, I'm not convinced anymore that there's a need or a spot for a bigger iMac.

Agreed.

But if they do do it, I think a $6,000 starting price would be weird. Yeah, they had the iMac Pro before, and that was $5,000, but they also at the time had the 27-inch non-Pro iMac below that, so they really had more of a range from $1,300 all the way across the $2000s, the $3000s, the $4000s in BTO options. They wouldn't this time, and that doesn't check out to me. I think Tim Cook doesn't like gaps like that. (See, for example, the 13-inch MacBook Pro. Or especially the iPhone.)

It’s taken longer than it should, but I personally felt a larger iMac will come again and never wavered from that feeling, despite all of the “Mac Studio and Mac Studio Display are the new iMac” naysayers. You can get off your high horses now, neigh-sayers 🐴

Are we sure it's not an updated Pro Display XDR? Not sure what that thing needs other than maybe a cheaper price tag on the stand. Unless the idea is to give it a webcam, center-stage and some A-series SoC running iOS like the Studio Display, but I'm sure no one wanting to buy a Pro Display XDR finds themselves needing it to be more like the Studio Display.

I NEED LARGER IMAC FOR THE SAME PRICE PREVIOUS 27” or I’m never upgrading, can’t imagine going down from 5K or paying an insane amount of money. How could they discontinue the best Mac I can’t fathom 🤦‍♂️ If they struggle with new design so much, they should just slap M1 series of chips without design change as they did with mba
