I guess technically ATT has until September 21 to provide MMS, must be packaged with the Sep 9th media event.

Late summer does not equal THE LAST DAY OF summer.

Actually it ends on Sept. 22, but who's counting.

And no, it doesn't have to come September 9. It could've come months ago. It's all up to AT&T.

September 9 is just a Music event as Aggie says, so.... in conclusion, we have to have patience.

Not necessarily so..... that is, if AT&T gave the new Carrier File to Apple, and Apple is withholding it for the OS Upgrade.

True, though given the tone in the keynote (can't remember who was talking) when announcing that AT&T wasn't going to be supporting MMS at launch, I have a hard time seeing them sitting on it for a single second.

Don't you want to put a sarcastic smiley at the end of that sentence? You can't be serious.

I think he is. Apple would not hld the update. Although I can see them holding the surprise of when The update is commng until the 9th.

Smiley? Not really. There have been numerous posts here about AT&T ready with MMS when Apple releases OS X 3.1. Even if this isn't true, we DO know that Apple has to release the Carrier Updates (that AT&T submits). The hacked Carrier Files may not have the right Server info for the iPhone MMS. Now, keeping in mind that it is Apple that has to release the correct Carrier File (that AT&T submits to them), you tell me who will be the last one to enable it (that turns it on for us..... AT&T, or Apple)?

One last note: Keep in mind, once AT&T submits a Carrier File, how long do you think it will take to get approved by Apple. An App takes a minimum of 2 weeks. How long do you think a Carrier File will take to test & approve?

Perhaps, but AT&T can also have file ready but not yet submitted. I mean both scenarios are possible.

Are you suggesting Apple would have the carrier update from AT&T, yet withhold it?

Why on any planet would they do that?

I recently took my SIM card out of my iPhone 3gs, and put it in my Blackberry 8900. Called at&t up, have everything switched over to my Blackberry, and the SMS has been working on my Blackberry perfectly.

Amazing, I guess the iPhone just ain't going to get it anytime soon.

    Read my edited post above....

Why? To insure it works according to Apple's specs. We don't fully know what it will involve.... just the MMS, or + Voicemail, or + Tethering. I'm sure that Apple will fully look at the code before approving. If they need it changed, we just have to read the App approval posts where Apple went back and forth with the Devs. In some cases, they bickered for months. I hope this isn't the case here.

I still count 22 days of summer...

Thus, we are still in late summer.

    OK, didn't see the edit.

I share your trepidation, but, given that MMS works almost everywhere else, on so many other carriers, on 3.0... I cannot help but think Apple would push this right out the door, post haste.

Apple would have no right withholding the carrier file, and I'm sure AT&T would have made a big deal out of it if it was indeed Apple holding up MMS on the iPhone in the US.
Also, it would only take a couple days for Apple to check and approve a new carrier file, seeing as AT&T is the only carrier in the US and I'm sure do not go through the same process as app developers. I'm sure Apple would have people all over a new carrier file checking it inside and out, and it would be approved within three days. AT&T may have told Apple to include it in their next software update.
Remember, 3.1 beta 2 and 3 have carrier file 4.5, which is allowing developers to send MMS. AT&T probably told Apple to hold it back.

is mms really that big a deal? I know it's fun and useful, but it's not as important as cut and paste, which we waited a long time for. it's just a few weeks, at the most. and I don't think thy will release it at the event on the 9th. they might announce it then and then say it will come in a fee days. they always give an official date at these things, never releasing it on the same day. just be patient, and I know some one will immediately post 'we have been patient since june'. just a little while longer

I don't know how many of you actually have used 3.1 betas, but they already come with the AT&T 4.5 carrier file, which includes MMS. Based on that, I'd say that 3.1 on september 9th will come with MMS and the AT&T 4.5 carrier. Although they added MMS, tethering is still absent.

Might be Apple encouraged AT&T to delay MMS for one more thing to add to the upcoming iPod event. I doubt AT&T would make a claim to release MMS and then withhold it for nothing.

In that case, I'd be angry for the sake of users who want MMS.

Personally, I'm not interested in being nickel and dimed for the sake of a special format phone message.

(Or should that be quartered? They probably cost that much by now.)

Can't wait for there to be an extra charge for these or they count as 10 texts. :)

Thirty cents. Hopefully. That's what they cost for others.

The thing that gets me is that AT&T has not to this day come forward and offer an explanation as to why MMS wasn't included with the 3.0 update.
