Apple is going a different way. They do not prefer discs, this is a technology from the last century. the key is on demand or what you get at the itunes store. thats the future. why you should by a movie from the itunes store when you already bought a bluray at best buy? are you getting it?
Please don't bring this nonsense into this thread. Blu-ray is so much higher quality than the "HD-lite" movies Apple offers on iTunes that it's almost a joke. If you don't like physical media, that's fine... but don't pretend they're of equivalent value because they're not.

Haha, went from the first few pages, several mentions of "No service, must be AT&T", to this page, and of course "No service, must be O2"

Agreed though, O2 coverage is hopeless.

If it comes without a contract I'll probably just use one of 3's new Mobile-signal-to-wifi thingies which I bought recently and have it connect to that. Whilst their customer service is rock-bottom (is there such a thing as a decent mobile phone provider?) their 3G coverage is practically everywhere.

Can't see why this'd be a "controlled leak" a) they generally mean information with regard to controlled leaks, not pictures. It's useful for people to know a tablet is forthcoming and get excited about it, but the keynote will have more of an impact if people haven't seen pics of the device and b) Why would they leak something the day before the keynote, it makes zero sense to me.

It makes sense for it to be an iPhone type OS, as that's very much been their baby as of recently, it's designed from the ground up for touchscreens, more suitable for low power/high battery life applications, and of course Apple have great control over it and over the distribution of third party software (and the associated profit share!). It wouldn't make any sense from their perspective to give it the full OS X. Besides I think their eventual goal is that having one big computer sat on a desktop with a "classic" desktop operating system will go the way of the dinosaur.

Going to be very tempted but it depends on a lot of factors - what it's like obviously, whether they've put any thought into it (and the adaptation of the iPhone OS) or just created a big iPhone, price, and whether I get my iMac back from repair before the next Christmas comes along.

what's that part at the top? what about this?

Somebody's probably replied already, but both top and bottom of the 'cloaking' frame have semi-circular slots, which logically would be there to remove the tablet device. Looks legit to me, but I am surprised by the lack of top/bottom symmetry! - definitely appears to have more space at the bottom end for the home button, which when turned landscape/widescreen will make it look a little unbalanced.

You do realize that someone still has to create the content you view on your pretty little tablet, don't you?

So no MacBook Pros, then? Such is life. Okay...bring on the tablet...
I don't think anyone said that. That being said, it will probably be a "quiet refresh" on their website. They aren't going to spend time talking about a MBP processor refresh in the midst of all the tablet stuff.

Interestingly, in that last photo; I'd argue that the tablet isn't bolted to the table. Its not square to the desk, and it almost looks like there's cables/notebooks running underneath it at the top of the screen.

Perhaps this bolted case is to shroud the external casing of the tablet so that nobody REALLY knows what it looks like? It'll also make the tablet bulkier making it hard to 'accidentally' wander off with it.

Apples idea is video on demand or download it completly from the store. The quality could be better, sure. I agree with you. But this is simply a question of time. Its just the idea wich is different.

I really like bluray, but i'm watching movies on a big flat screen with a nice bluray player from sony. thats a lot more easier and faster as connection first the computer to the screen.

lets see what happend with apple tv in the future.

I had a 12" HP laptop 6 years ago with a 1920x1200 screen.

12"? Are you sure? The highest dpi screens I've seen so far on laptops are 15.4" 1920x1200 (I'm typing on a Dell with such a screen right now). I can never have enough resolution; I'd love a 12" screen that sharp...

And yes, while there are iPhone cases that would fit on it and look just like that, why would that iPhone have a piece of yellow tape on it with info and a piece of white tape with info, like tagging info or ID stuff, just like the tablet itself.

I can't imagine just any old iPhone that belongs to any employee would have TAPE ON THE SCREEN WITH ID INFO ON IT just for kicks.

Think please. If you would be in charge of that testing group, would you allow employee iPhones in there? I wouldn't be surprised if these guys had to get in through a metal detector and surrender everything that remotely resembles a picture taking device.

So, this is obviously a testing iPhone to maybe test connectivity with the tablet. Maybe the case around that iPhone is there to obscure the camera of it.

How did the guy take the picture? I don't know, but I'm willing to bet that these people are being watched like hawks and that this guy is probably packing his stuff as of this moment and is being fired.

If that hasn't happened yet and If I would be Steve Jobs, I would let someone analyse the orientation of the security screws and match those up with the tablet in the test room and try to find out who has been working with that specific tablet. It shouldn't be too difficult finding out who did this and fire him on the spot.

Unless this is a controlled leak of course (which I personally don't believe..).

Yeah, 15"... hit the wrong key. Sorry. :)

Anyway, yes, Apple is behind in the resolution game (and I agree with you, I can never have enough either).

By definition, yes, 720p is a requirement to view HD movies. No 720p, no HD.

The Zune HD isn't 720p. It's still called HD. If it can play 720p content (even at reduced resolution), or play it back on another 720p screen, they can use HD in the name, apparently.

I don't know about this. If the MBPs received even a semi-major upgrade (like new processors), this kind of information would be publicly announced. I doubt they'd want to bother with that during this Tablet announcement, which leads me to think it will be March before we see new MBPs (at the earliest), which is a pain for me...in SoCal for 1 week and wanted to save the £200 on a new machine...

Oh well...still looking forward to 10:00 PST.

It is not a semi-major upgrade, but maybe it is possible that apple will update the mbps in store after the keynote, silently. the new imacs were also updated silently.

There has never ever been an LCD panel manufactured at that resolution - 1920x1200 - in a 12" or 12.1" form factor, at least not yet. Tablet PCs over the years have used the very common 12.1" size, either 1024x768 or 1400x1050 resolution (I'm typing this on a Toshiba M205 Tablet PC with a 12.1" 1400x1050 screen, btw), and Toshiba had one model a few years ago with a 1400x1050 14.1" screen in it.

Newer tablets come with 1366x768 screens (those Touchsmart models from HP and some from Dell now), but 1920x1200 has never been a resolution you'd find on a 12.1" LCD.

I'm guessing this tablet will be either 1280x720 or perhaps 1366x768, we'll find out soon enough I suppose. I could sit here and map out the pixels from those pictures based on a given font size and figure it out but, by then Steve-o will be walking on stage I guess. :D

No doubt it will get better with time.

In the meantime, I would like the option to watch my movies in the best quality which is available NOW. Streaming is nice and dandy, but if it's a compromise in quality, I'm not interested. "Someday" they'll have better bitrate and resolution, no question. And "someday" I'll probably be interested in streaming something. But until that "someday" is even remotely on the horizon, it's rather brash of Apple to just deny all of their users the *choice* of a better experience simply because they prefer to force you to download.

I got one of the images and took it to photoshop and played around with the "Shadow/Highlight" setting to reveal more detail in the shadow areas and there seems to be another circular indentation at the top...maybe another home button? Camera? Maybe I'm just seeing things haha but it's interesting. http://i46.tinypic.com/30bgq46.jpg

Ah that changes my understanding of what I was seeing - the border/cloak is overlapping the device screen edges - so I imagine it will be fully balanced - the shape of the top funnel/ho;e in the frame does indeed suggest camera.

I like physical media too, but I think dooyou is right with regards to Apple's thinking. Basically, the device will be specced to play anything available via iTunes and at a resolution that Apple defines as "HD". They would have no reason to produce a device that can show blu-ray or even any other video format at 1080p if they don't offer that quality via their store. Actually 720p at a decent bit rate would look very nice on a 9 or 10" screen. It would also transfer well to the TV when the tablet is hooked up via the TV out.

You may be right about the time frame, but I don't think that will have anything to do with the tablet. They don't usually "bring up" an update to the product line unless there is an aesthetic shift to go along with it.

The last Mac Pro update was completely silent except for the website refresh, and it was a fairly substantial one.
