Also, is it just me or has this rumour-fest been more secretive than others? We seemed to know that all about the new iPods and MacBooks before they were announced... Yet here, we started off looking like a surprisingly dull show with some hardware announcements, but now it's looking like there may be more software, and the only thing that seems to be certain is the Mac mini - which won't take up 1 1/2 hours of Phil's time on-stage... I think it's been fun, and the tension is building!

iWork '09 evidence?

Throw in a killer iWork update, and it's consumer heaven. :)

I think I have evidence to suggest an iWork update. I was on the Apple Downloads page just now, and read something rather interesting in the Top Downloads section... even if it does point to iWork '08...

<edit> Also, if a download exists, that suggests iWork isn't being absorbed into the cloud... yet </edit>

I think it's that a lot of people figured that there wouldn't be any major announcements when it came out that Phil was giving the keynote instead.

It's almost expected that there would be an iWork '09 update so it's not surprising...

Quick off-topic question - is it possible to use a Mac mini as a media server (eg, store an iTunes library on it and share it to other computers)?

It is possible to share libraries on your home network sort of. You can set it so that the other computers see the library from your mini and stream content. The issue is that if you download a song to your macbook for example, it doesn't sync to the mini. You would manually need to add it to the mini's library (or just always download to one computer). It's really hard to not end up with some stuff on one computer and some stuff on another, with no easy and clear method for reconciliation.

It MAY be possible to actually share one library, but I gave up as any purported solutions are just too clunky. This would be my BIGGEST wish for iTunes (OK- my biggest realistic wish), and if it meant buying a new mini just to do it, I might consider it sadly...

Great find. I saw it with my own eyes myself.

My big dream is a home server (the Mac mini would be perfect for this) for your home.

Imagine this:
  • Purchase an album (or heck, a song) in iTunes on a computer. It instantly syncs up to your home server, which then syncs it to any other Mac (or PC running iTunes) in your house. The server also takes care of syncing it with your AppleTV.
  • Download pictures on a computer into iPhoto. Instantly the photos are synced with your home server, then synced to all of the other Macs on your home network. Your iPhoto library is now never out of sync.
  • Documents folder and all user preferences automatically synced with home server, who then distributes it to other Mac's on your home network. So when you log into another Mac, you get the same wallpaper, dock icons, and documents.
  • Time Machine backups go to home server automatically.
  • Home Server keeps fresh image of Leopard or Snow Leopard installation, so if needed a pretty quick reload of your Mac is possible.

That would suck. Flixable pricing would just mean the good songs would be expensive, and the bad songs would be cheap.

Can't wait for tomorrow... my second time liveblogging!

No it means that the popular songs will be expensive not necessarily the goog ones.

Neat concept, but my goal would be to keep the files in one location, not sync them to a home server then copy them to all the clients. I think Apple can use their work with the purchase syncing in AppleTV/iPhone to extend this functionality to let remote purchases on computers sync back properly to the central server when it communicates with it next.

Design doesn't need a refresh unless it's for more hardware?????? What Apple company are you talking about?????

I almost forgot!

Disagree,

The hardware end is the oldest Mac that needs an visual update. The whole line up has been redesigned and MacPro and displays still the same.
Maybe smaller footprint or just keep the same as long as the expandability stays the same. Intel MacPros runs cooler than the old powermacs that required such larger cases, so maybe making it smaller would not be an issue at all.

You want to turn a workstation into a mini-tower and have a cool looking display next to it so you can be cool and take photos of your desk to show every one how much Apple hardware you have.

If I am wrong let me know.

Otherwise, the Mac Pro doesn't need to be smaller or redesigned. If there is more space for HARDWARE like another HDD bay so I can do RAID 5 without taking up the second optical or another double wide slot then it should be used for HARDWARE not cute smaller cases.

Redesigns are for technical flaws not personal ones. If your desk is too small for a Mac Pro or you can't lift it get a bigger desk or a second hand.

This mentality of redesigning for cosmetic reasons alone is what is turning Apple into the company it is now, a sucky fad chasing group of hippie starbucks drinkers don't do much work and just d!ck around on their expensive machines.

No offense to you, just early morning venting. :)

Yeah, maybe we'll get an iphone nano, or a mac netbook, or something completely unexpected! Just imagine Phil taking his iphone out... but look - it's smaller!!! or maybe he won't have a manila folder, but an A5 sized one... and out drops an macnetbook nano?!?!?!? OMG!!!

:) Sorry - just getting excited!!!

Something must be going on...

The entire iPhone data network is down in Boston on AT&T. My Blackberry Bold on AT&T is fine of course.

Maybe they are adding some sort of service for the iphone?

I hope they fix the pricing on the Time Capsule. $499 was reasonable for 1TB when the unit came out, but the price on 1TB hard drives has decreased so drastically since then that $499 is now way past the intersection of Ridiculous Ave. and Ripoff Drive.

That and the Mini, of course. I've been waiting for a fast Mini to purchase as a media system. Purrrrr. :)

There is NO iPhone data network. it is the exact same data network as all the other phones.

do some research next time

^^

I don't really get this whole MMS thing. Who actually uses MMS when you can use email for free??? MMS has never done well in any market. It's just for the innovators and.. as we know... those are few and far between.

.... Waiting patiently for 6pm!! (not really patiently at all!)

before offering your opinion on MMS do some research before saying who actually uses it ? and that it has never done well in any market !

Good call Warbrain thanks for letting me know that.

Sorry - I meant the data connection on my iphone in Boston is not working. I have confirmed it with others in my office. Others with Blackberry's and windows mobile phones are working fine. They can get on the web etc. The iPhones can not get internet service.

error message reads "Could not activate cellular data network"
Hard resets have been done as well as resetting network settings.

Sadness.

It's being reported as all devices now. They may have just not cycled on the network yet.

Is it too late to wish for some kind of iPhone software update??? I havent herd much talk about it. One can always keep hope

These rumors sound very exciting, especially the one about iTunes. The Mac mini rumor has gone around so long, and it's such an obvious choice that it's no surprise. Two more hours.

Couldn't have said it better. I don't think they should mess with the outer design of the case at all.
