Er - is it just me or did this just change too?
24-inch (viewable) glossy widescreen, 1680 by 1050 pixels
Nasty!
WTF 1680 x 1050 ???
You've already answered your own question.
Wow. I'm really REALLY shocked. I had 3 friends who were waiting until today to switch based on my advice. What a prick I feel! Needless to say they won't be switching now. I'm busy looking at open source MP3 library tools and investigating the possibility of using OS X on hardware other than Apple's.
core i7 is good, really good!!
These perform the same. A Xeon 5550 is the same as the i7 920, just has one more QPI connection to connect to another processor. High end desktops are really aimed at gamers and enthusiasts. The Xeon W3520 is the same as the i7 920 too but with ECC support and will be aimed at UP (uni-processor) workstations and servers on the lower end. The Xeons are for DP (dual processor) workstation and servers like the Mac Pro and Xserve.
Intel like to be as confusing as possible![]()
The basic (read cheapest) iMac price has risen by over £100.
but for that you get 320 GB as opposed to 250 GB
7200 rpm as opposed to 5400 rpm (Great for me as I'm running pro music software)
a better graphics card, and better expandability, (upto 8GB Ram, 1TB HDD)
I'm a bit upset about the price hike, but the spec offered is good enough to warrant it IMO.
I'll be ordering a new iMac in the next couple of weeks![]()
Okay. Reallybtited. Why no i7 chipsnin mac pro. Aren't these chips faster ( on iPhone so forgive typing)...are we still locked in to expensive EEC Memory???
Why no i7!!!!!!!!
So mini has FireWire and dedicated GPU. So it will run motion and use adapter for fw400? Meaning macbook has no FireWire so you can do pro apps with FireWire cam cord on mini, play games, audio pro hardware support but can't do this on the MacBook? Wow. Too funny, but awesome if true.
Again, no i7 why??????!
Peace
Look at that...
J. G. just dropped his first complaisant line...
"$1499 now gets you a 24-inch iMac, and the $1199 20-inch iMac now has twice the RAM and storage."
Either they use a full Tylersburg and a new design, a gimped Tylersburg and the current design, or they don't use Tylersburg at all.
Yep.Unfortunately, that's 24 inches and integrated graphics. Its a downgrade in that aspect until the $1799 mark.
Frankly I'am!!!!
The Mini close to what I was expecting. In fact extremely close and honestly I don't know what took them so long. The only stupid thing here is that the two models should of had two different speed CPU's, with the high speed option being 2.4 GHz. That would have made for a slightly better two box lineup and eliminated a lot of custom builds.
The iMac on the other hand is a big joke. No where in the line up do they have a quad core processor which is totally outrageous and again I have to wonder what the long wait was all about. I really didn't expect every model to go Quad core but on the other hand zero isn't really acceptable. That one mistake makes what would otherwise be a nice selection of machines, into a bunch of models for the low end and the uninformed.
Really this is frustrating because if you know where Apple is going with its OS you will want to have more than two cores in your machine. Not everything in the software world can be done well on a GPU, nor would you want to. Especially low end GPU's. That last thing you want to do is to clog up the GPU pipelines with code that should run on real processors. I'm just amazed that people think that Snow Leopard is all of a sudden going to make limited hardware extremely fast. It certainly will improve the experience on older hardware but it will also be able to make better use of more cores than ever before. If you are serious about tracking Apple OS'es in the future you don't want dual core hardware it is as simple as that.
Another boner is that I see nothing on Apples official web site indicating that the displays have LED backlighting. I'm hoping this is an oversight but it does make a big difference. Not only because of the hazzards of CCFL but the quality of lighting. Hopefully this will be specified more clearly but for now there is nothing on Apples iMac section of their web site. Somewhat related Apple hasn't specified the CPU very well either. When you go look at a spec sheet you expect well specs, info, data anything but more reasons to wonder.
As to the rest of the machine, yeah the new RAM allotment and bigger HD storage are nice. The thing is we aren't fools either and realize that the prices on this stuff have crashed over the last year.
Like I said the Mini is fairly close to what I expected. The low end iMac isn't to bad either if you think of it as an entry level machine. As the line progresses though disappointment really sets in and you are left thinking this is Apples biggest boondoggle in years.
Frankly if I was a major stock holder i'd be crying in my breakfast right now. Seriously. Apple has already, over the last year, had a lot of trouble with the hackintosh community and Pystar or whatever. These iMacs are just like throwing fuel on the fire and demonstrate that Apple clearly doesn't have any respect at all for the market or its customers. Apple may think that their monopoly protects them from bad business decisions but we have seen in the past that people have abandoned Apple when they get to cocky with pricing. I suspect many a customer will be driven off the Mac teat by this marketing screw up.
Funny but the market appears to be neutral on this as AAPL seems to be steady right now. Maybe they haven't woke up yet. I can't imagine investors throwing money at a company that force feeds outdated product like this onto a loyal customer base. Well once loyal. Even worst there is that element of treating their customers like idiots that I find appalling.
In any event I'm going to go sleep on this for a while and look forward to seeing how the rest of the world has reacted to this ineptitude.
Thanks
Dave
