Wrong

I really hope that people don't take to much to heart in your statements above.

Dave

Dave, you should really check your facts before posting. The latest C2D use a 45nm processor and have twice the number of transitors compared to the 65nm C2Ds. They are much better performers than the previous generation at the same clock speed and even out perform faster clock speed 65nm C2Ds.

After recalculating the price, I can get the mac pro that I want (8-core) for around 178.92 per month, that is doable for me, as I am a student, this is JUST doable. I'll need a new screen to go along with that though, hmm.

Why apple? Why? Well, I know why, but can't you give me just a couple hundred off, gosh..

new iMac, Mac mini, and Mac Pro

It is on the front page of Apple's web site. I have not looked through their specs, but we can now get past if/what and start with accolades/complaints.

Did anyone notice they upgraded the 15'' MacBook Pro as well.. ?

Yeah noticed that when you go to the actual page. This has gone up by about £70 too!

EDIT: My mistake, this has actually dropped by £35 from when i got one in Oct not gone up in price.

Anyone think it's worth canceling my order for the Mac Pro single Quad 2.8 Xeon for the new Mac Pro single Quad 2.66GHz or single 2.93Ghz Nehalem? It seems it only supports 8Gb of memory and has a better graphics card. But, is it worth it otherwise?

Can't really stomach the price for the 8-Core model.

mac pro 8-core price jump worth it?

If I'm reading this right: A $500 price jump on the basic 8-core MacPro? GHz is lower on the new model (2.8 vs. 2.26), but the overall processing is 2.4x faster. Is the $500 really worth that or would we be better off buying a close-out 8-core? I see the HD is a bit bigger and 6gb of ram instead of 2gb.

I also don't know much about the graphics cards but was expecting some better choices. Anyone know if the GT 120 is much of an improvement over the HD 2600 XT?

I was waiting to buy an 8-core when the new release came out, but now I don't know if I should just save some $$ and buy the older one and beef it up myself.

Anyone know any specs on a GT120 in the Mac Pro? And why does the iMac get a bloody GT130.

I know the GT120 is 256mb and the GT130 is 512mb, but are these cards any good?

You think YOU'RE bad off, they went up $1900 over here in Australia, from $3999 to $5899. I'm just lucky I have a student discount xD.

$1900 is outrageous, $1200 tops.

Hi,

£649.00 for a top spec Mac Mini?? Are Apple having a joke? £150 more than the base model and the only differences beetween them are a bigger hard drive, 1 GIG more RAM(wow) oh and let's not forget they both have the same graphics chip what a pile of complete rubbish!!! Talk about using this whole credit crunch recession to blind people!!

Complete letdown if you ask me, those prices are not justifiable in my eyes. I really don't like Apple's business strategy at the moment.

Michael.

I agree, Apple UK are smoking Credit Crunch Crack™
Makes the white MacBook look great value next to the insane £649 Mac mini.

I predict the crippled 128MB shared video RAM on the base model will be hackable to take it to 256MB.

Does anybody know which I should get?

ATI Radeon HD 4870 512MB

or

2x NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 512MB

I can't find any specs on the nVidia, I was also considering getting a third - is it possible to buy the third/fourth at a later date?

You've already answered your own question.
Wow. I'm really REALLY shocked. I had 3 friends who were waiting until today to switch based on my advice. What a prick I feel! Needless to say they won't be switching now. I'm busy looking at open source MP3 library tools and investigating the possibility of using OS X on hardware other than Apple's.

iMac Resolution?

Er - is it just me or did this just change too?

24-inch (viewable) glossy widescreen, 1680 by 1050 pixels

Nasty!

Are you guys disgusted with the iMac "update"???

Frankly I'am!!!!

The Mini close to what I was expecting. In fact extremely close and honestly I don't know what took them so long. The only stupid thing here is that the two models should of had two different speed CPU's, with the high speed option being 2.4 GHz. That would have made for a slightly better two box lineup and eliminated a lot of custom builds.

The iMac on the other hand is a big joke. No where in the line up do they have a quad core processor which is totally outrageous and again I have to wonder what the long wait was all about. I really didn't expect every model to go Quad core but on the other hand zero isn't really acceptable. That one mistake makes what would otherwise be a nice selection of machines, into a bunch of models for the low end and the uninformed.

Really this is frustrating because if you know where Apple is going with its OS you will want to have more than two cores in your machine. Not everything in the software world can be done well on a GPU, nor would you want to. Especially low end GPU's. That last thing you want to do is to clog up the GPU pipelines with code that should run on real processors. I'm just amazed that people think that Snow Leopard is all of a sudden going to make limited hardware extremely fast. It certainly will improve the experience on older hardware but it will also be able to make better use of more cores than ever before. If you are serious about tracking Apple OS'es in the future you don't want dual core hardware it is as simple as that.

Another boner is that I see nothing on Apples official web site indicating that the displays have LED backlighting. I'm hoping this is an oversight but it does make a big difference. Not only because of the hazzards of CCFL but the quality of lighting. Hopefully this will be specified more clearly but for now there is nothing on Apples iMac section of their web site. Somewhat related Apple hasn't specified the CPU very well either. When you go look at a spec sheet you expect well specs, info, data anything but more reasons to wonder.

As to the rest of the machine, yeah the new RAM allotment and bigger HD storage are nice. The thing is we aren't fools either and realize that the prices on this stuff have crashed over the last year.

Like I said the Mini is fairly close to what I expected. The low end iMac isn't to bad either if you think of it as an entry level machine. As the line progresses though disappointment really sets in and you are left thinking this is Apples biggest boondoggle in years.

Frankly if I was a major stock holder i'd be crying in my breakfast right now. Seriously. Apple has already, over the last year, had a lot of trouble with the hackintosh community and Pystar or whatever. These iMacs are just like throwing fuel on the fire and demonstrate that Apple clearly doesn't have any respect at all for the market or its customers. Apple may think that their monopoly protects them from bad business decisions but we have seen in the past that people have abandoned Apple when they get to cocky with pricing. I suspect many a customer will be driven off the Mac teat by this marketing screw up.

Funny but the market appears to be neutral on this as AAPL seems to be steady right now. Maybe they haven't woke up yet. I can't imagine investors throwing money at a company that force feeds outdated product like this onto a loyal customer base. Well once loyal. Even worst there is that element of treating their customers like idiots that I find appalling.

In any event I'm going to go sleep on this for a while and look forward to seeing how the rest of the world has reacted to this ineptitude.

Thanks
Dave

Anyone think these will be available in stores today?

I think they'll be available today, yes. I don't anticipate any availability problems what-so-ever this time round. Apple have priced a lot of people out of switching and updating gear.
