Ctrl-shift-eject will reset the screen and stop the flicker temporarily.

As a person who spends about $4-10K personally on Apple products per year, and authorizes about $350,000 in corporate purchases, I am getting sick and tired of the shoddy quality in the past few years.

It is getting worse and worse. Cool innovation without quality build isn't worth squat. I hope someone at Apple with power understands this.

Get used to it. As Jobs is going away, the quality of Apple products has only one direction to take. As they are slowly yet steadily expanding their market, pressure would mount to start making cheaper products with shorter life cycle (~2y). Or in other words: market of companies making products with long life cycle (~5y) is shrinking and marginalizing, as hardware more and more looses its relevance to connected services.

(Bad car analogy: old cars could last 15-25 years, new cars lasts top 10 years. Because safety standards and fuel economy classes change too often, it make no sense now to invest into development of car which can last 25y. And competition made sure that there would be no turning back.)

I personally bought UMBP17 as my last Apple products - solely because I do not expect that Jobs now (even if he stays with Apple) would be able to keep products at the level of quality many of us got used to. Without influence of Jobs, Apple's management would unlikely be capable to fend off stockholders who unconscious push company to become another Dell. Without Jobs, there would be no dictator setting/maintaining high engineering standards inside the company.

I've been using the 9600M GT pretty much since the minute I got it, but after switching to the 9400M GT, I noticed my screen flickering. I just switched back to the 9600M GT and I think I just noticed some flickering again.

This is on the 17" unibody MBP. Today is the 14th day of ownership and I have the feeling I might have to take it back to the Apple store :( I'm hesitant to take it back because I was happy to get the 9C99 screen.

Just got back from the Genius Bar.

I was told it was a known issue, but that couldn't repair it and I would have to live with it until Apple released a software update!

I am very disappointed, as I can't use the computer for more than 5 minutes without getting headaches. So now I have a $2000 paperweight until I figure out what to do next.

Really? They gave me a new one. I even got a 2.66 to replace my 2.53.

I feel mine should have been replaced as well. I've had this one (my third replacement for 2 other defective machines) for more than 20-30 days though so that might have factored in. Although I really would have been happy with a repair or anything besides being told I have to deal with the flickering.

I am going to call Apple Customer-relations tomorrow.

Same here, Im getting a new bumped up version too. Apple is replacing my 2.8ghz UMBP with a 2.93 ghz UMBP.

Albeit, they only did one repair and it took them 3 weeks (I was quoted 3-5 business days), but the flickering persisted as I went to review the repair that was done, so the genius offered to replace it for me. They also let me hold on to the unit, til the new one arrived, as my previous unit was BTO.

I should get it sometime next week.

Call their corpo office 408-996-1010.

Same here - 2.8 upgraded to a 2.96. Hope the problem is gone this time - it will have almost been worth it if it is fixed... almost....

Continuing from from last update:

Last week my MacBook's inverter and LCD panel were replaced at an authorized Apple repair center. Everything seemed great until yesterday, and again today, when the screen momentarily flickered. The flickers seem less drastic and less frequent, but the problem persists nonetheless. :(

Don't know what to do from here...

i hope there will be a software update o fix it.

mine is pulsing/quick flicker that happens at low brightness levels but only last a few minutes. Then if starting cold, it does it again.

Do screens flicker at higher / highest brightness settings? I'm curious to see if this does anything as I always have my brightness at 50%.

I tend to get flicker after a few minutes, so I took it in to have it checked, and the "genius" couldn't see anything wrong with it. I told him to go to the back since the bright lights that plague the store make it impossible to see any flickering, but he declined and told me that he knows what he's doing and what to look for when it comes to screen flicker.

 I'm tired of this crap.

Hmm.. software issue eh. I hope that is the case. I did fill out a bugreport a couple weeks back on Apple's developer site. And then they had me run some debug program.

But yeah, I doubt they'd give me a replacement from 2.8 to 2.93, since I got this MBP back in late Dec.

Well it took 2 returns (Thank you Amazon for your fantastic return policy!!!) but my 3rd MBP 15" doesn't have the screen flicker. Just wanted to post and let people know there are good ones out there. Sad I had go through two to find one good one though!

The issue with these forums is that people get their problems fixed and then do not end up reporting back as to what was fixed etc. If anyone gets a repair done (e.g. logic board replacement) that fixes the problem for you, please remember to post back to this board.

Your being overly optimistic. It's more likely that most people simply haven't found a solution, perhaps even after multiple replacements (like me), or diagnostics by Apple Genius'.

how bad is this flickering problem? Im gettin kinda deppresed reading all this since i just recently ordered my MBP:/.

While my own personal opinion is that all 9c84 panels have the flickering problem and only a small percentage notice it, I think you will still love your MBP. While I've had sort of a love-hate relationship with mine, I can tell you its an incredible machine.

Check yours out carefully for any defects, and if there is anything you feel you can't live with, get it replaced.

Over at the apple support forums there are those with 9c85 screens that also have the flicker...

Is it roughly equal then? I have only had 9c84's so I guess I just hoped the grass was greener on the other side. Oh well, thanks for the info.

Same problems;

I have the shimmer/flicker problem too (15" MB pro, the 00009C84). At first i ignored it, but i have to spend my 2200€ wisely, so i expect some quality.

Called Apple, got a (RMA? DMA?)number and went to the store to get a replacement.

2 thingies of interest:

The Apple support guy told me it's a known problem and that it will be solved in a future firmware update,

As he said that, he also told me it's a valid reason for replacement (duh) and i should check if the other screens have it before i take the replacement home (duh again).

We checked all MB pro's in the store (including three boxed; we unwrapped them because if they have it, they would send them back too) and they ALL have the flicker problem. Sadly, the store is now out of stock.

I'm now waiting for a 2,66Ghz, fingers crossed!

I've been told the same thing by Apple. This is clearly a software issue that affects a LARGE percentage of MBP's. I'd wager that almost every UMBP flickers to some degree and it's either too intermittent to be diagnosed/noticed, or the user doesn't care. This 2.66Ghz that I have now has only flickered two or three times and I really am over it.

Got an RMA number, and i'm using it to trade mine in for a 2,66 version, just to be on the edge (costs me €50),

/offtopic/
Just ordered the 24" LED.. hooked the MB up to a samsung TN screen, and boy; that sucks :p

I've been reading up, and i believe the LED is the single highest dotpitched-screen on the market at the moment (nearest one is a eizo, goes voor €1100 over here)

Andrewupstairs, im assuming your 2.53ghz was well over 14 days old right? you just took it to an apple store and they saw the problem and gave you a 2.66, just like that?

P.S. did you have apple care or the 1 year warranty?

I know that this was directed at another poster, but I was in the same boat as Andrewupstairs. I had a 2.8ghz UMBP, and apple attempted one repair (for the flicker issue on an 9c84 panel). The repair that was done, was the replacement of the LCD. The issue persisted, so they replaced my unit with another CTO unit. At that point, the 2.8 was replaced with the 2.93 (9c85 panel). I received that laptop and it has been flicker free, knock on wood.

I did not purchase applecare, and I was still under the initial one year that comes with the laptop.
