Sure here you go https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/585810/

The in person viewing in the Apple store that I did, you will have to take my word on that cause I have no evidene unless I go back to the store and try to take digital pics of the screens but I am not sure they will show enough detail to be of value. Guess I could try if someone wants as I am planning on going back there over the weeked.

Thanks! I appreciate the effort, but I already read that thread. The comments contained therein are essentially the same (i.e. one looks better, the last MBPs used three different parts, etc.).

I'm looking for some objective evidence (formal document?) that will state whether or not Apple is using different manufacturers to supply the LED screens for the new MBPs. So far, everyone's justification for this claim is based upon first-person observation in an extremely bright showroom with notebooks that have been 'tampered' with.

I'm not claiming that Apple doesn't use three different LED screens, I'm just suspending judgment until it's proved without a reasonable doubt. This has me very, very worried :(

There is no objective data. Someone here, with no explanation of their expertise or lack therefore, says they walked into a store and 50% of the screens are bad. Then a dozen people jump all over this as fact and thank them for their objective review. Man, I should sell a bridge on this forum, there seem to be people willing to believe anything. If Apple's QC was this bad, they'd be hurting big time. I only believe what I can see, and all the ones I've seen are great.

I follow the same reasoning. However, I haven't seen any new MBPs in person and I just dropped $2,500. I think I have a little reason to be concerned

FYI, I'm not stupid enough to drop $2,500 without seeing the computer unless it was absolutely necessary. Unfortunately, this just happened to be one of those times!

I don't disagree with you and I wasn't really commenting on your concern (which is warranted). I was more commenting on the other thread. Even after seeing the screens I had some concern about about the individual quality and whether there would be any stuck pixels. Fortunately my individual copy was fine and had no problems.

Well I certainly hope that I have the same luck as you (if luck is indeed a factor). Other than the beautiful screen, how are you liking the new MBP?

Speed is a little better than before, but not huge. 320GB 5400rpm drive is about the same speed as my previous 200GB 7200rpm drive (even benchmarks almost identical). The build quality is fantastic, I just love this form factor. Honestly, the only thing I really wish it had was the screen resolution to be 1680x1050 instead of 1440x900. But this is one sweet machine.

Actually I disagree with you here, I was one of the lucky ones when the whole screen fiasco happened during the intial SR MBP release. I ordered mine the day ofthe release and received asamsung in mine that just happened to be perfect but the majority of people getting the samsung display in theirs came with dead pixels and a yellow tint to them. There was even a poll here https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/340679/
So the LG models were statistically superior at that time based on users reporting their issues. I do not know what it is like now, but then the LG was the holy grail.

Well, I was speaking in general (not only macbooks or notebooks for that matter) including HDTVs, etc. So maybe in terms of macbook/notebook panel quality LG used to be superior (somehow...) but GENERALLY Samsung is DEFINITELY up there with LG. Like, for example, look at Samsung's HDTVs - highly regarded as the best for the past decade :)

Found out: 9C85 is Chi Mei

I learned that Chi Mei has a limited viewing angle and becomes yellowish when viewd from the side. The number of the panel is: 9C85 = N154C6-L04. You may google it.

I got the number with SwitchResX by exporting the monitor profile.

I don’t like the quality compared to the old Samsung matte display.

But I guess people have to see for themselfes...

Did you pull this from the new MBP? I tried to google it, but I only found matches for previous models.

Number to indetify the panel in your MacBook Pro

Yes, install SwitchResX.

Then save your display profile with SwitchResX (installed the system prefs) under Resolutions -> Display -> Export EDID.

Then google the number from the EDID-file (Descriptor #2).

The new MacBook Pro says: N154C6-L04

And this is according to ZDNet a TN-Panel from Chi Mei.

...If what you say is right then I got the Chi Mei one. My model number is 00009C85. I just checked for yellowing and you're right, it starts becoming yellow when the view angle approaches ~45 degrees. From ~80 degrees, everything becomes completely yellow.

I guess it's not such a big deal. Who usually looks at their display from that angle anyway?

I had an LG-screened MBP before, and it turned yellow when viewed from the side as well... I also have the 9C85 now.

And how are you finding the 9C85? Have you been able to compare it to other (new) MBPs?

I'm a little anxious - mine comes on Friday. I'm excited but also a little concerned.

Your welcome and I realize that different people viewing different brand panels will have different opinions of how good they look to them. But whether or not you want to believe something without a formal Apple document is your choice. I think it is extremely easy to see that Apple like most other laptop manufacturers is and has been using multiple vendors for their display panels like in a lottery. Regardless of having an official document that no manufacturer would provide anyway, it is not hard to look up the brand and model of the display panel to see for your own self that is what they are doing. Just go up to a few machines and check for yourself. Whats actually in the machine is what is in the machine regardless of a document being in existence of this crappy practice. Anyway some say ignorance is bliss so if you feel better thinking it isn't hppening because Apple won't reveal this to its customers in a formal document then thats your choice and I am glad your happy.

Also remember what really is the true value of a formal document when it comes to peoples own varying image quality interpretations, at one time people were told the world was flat too in formal documents in school........

BTW.. In case your curious this practice has been around before here are a few links to threads discussing the issue when the SR MBP was released. I was one of the lucky ones who got a good screen with my first machine.

The 9C85 looks good. Colors seem accurate to me. Good contrast. The colors are probably a little dull in saturation, at least compared to the seemingly hypersaturated Sony Z I had, but I don't think it's bad at all. I haven't calibrated it yet, just using the stock settings.

Sorry, haven't compared it to much, though now I'm curious... May stop by an Apple store later to get a mini-displayport adapter, think I'll compare then.

EDIT: Also gotta mention that I'm happy there's pretty much no easily detectable light leakage and black levels look good to me.

Looks like 9C84 is an LG: LP154WP3-TLA1

Looks pretty good so far. No dead pixels, just calibrated. The profiles that came with this thing are terrible. More details to come.

Cool, that's what I have. I profiled mine with the x-rite eye one hardware and the coloreyes display pro software. I choose native white balance and gamma 2.2 for the one that looks best to me.

I feel weird saying this, but I compared my Chi Mei 9C85 to the few 9C84s I ran into at the Apple store, and I prefer my '85

At stock calibration settings, it looked like my display had better contrast/saturation with the few test images I compared (desktop wallpapers). Viewing angles were similar. Calibrated, I bet they would look identical.

maybe in your particular situation, but I've compared many mbp's so far (about 15.. yeah I'm like that XD), and Chi Mei's this round is again worse on average. I personally have a Chi Mei screen as well, but my screen is noticeably "worse" than my brother's late08 mbp which has the LG screen. *steals, replaces...lol*

I have the same panel as you, and feel pretty much exactly the same... great so far. Better than the other MBP screens Ive seen, for sure.

I believe you must have a decent one as I have the Chi Mei in my Dell and it just happens to be a particularly good one and it is absolutely stunning compared to any other laptop panel I have seen before. Easily twice as good as the one in my MBP. So they must have alot of variance in their production runs and if you get a good Chi Mei then they are really good. I wouldn't trade the one I have in my Dell for any other panel out there. Just got lucky I guess.

I have a 9C84. I think the screen looks fantastic! I have no dead pixels either.

I was at a coffee shop earlier this evening. A customer came up to me and asked how I liked my new MacBook Pro. I told him I loved it. I made a comment about how much I love the screen. He said, "yeah, that's what caught my eye. The screen looks really nice!"

I'd have to say this is one of the nicest screens I have ever seen in a notebook. Simply beautiful.
