Jeez, you guys are confusing a refresh for a performance bump!
The specs will stay exactly the same. Only the processors will change if this bump actually happens.
IMO Apple won't go for the bump, because all of the new processors lack vPro. The performance gains are negligible, and the lack of vPro means less business options and a hit on security. Also, the lack of vPro probably means FileVault performance will be decreased.

But if :apple: does go for it, then it'll be a mild boost of 0.1-0.2Ghz per processor.

Interesting turn of events...turns out that ark.intel.com was incorrect about the Core i7-2760QM and Core i7-2860QM lacking vPro. See my screenshot. They're fixing the typo now.

I thought I'd bump this thread rather than start a new one.

I have a 5 year old MBP that I'd been hoping to hold off replacing completely as I graduate in a few months and won't need new MBP anymore (but would certainly make good use of it if I had it).

However leading up to my graduation I'm putting together a portfolio that requires me to work on large photoshop and other adobe files and my MBP just can't cope. I also don't have working tab or ctrl keys which makes everything slower. Sometimes my files are taking 5-10 minutes to save progress work and this is really slowing my productivity down.

I can only really afford the base model 13" MBP at the moment and am really torn between waiting a few weeks in hope of an update (stores here in australia also reduce the prices of old models to clear stock) or biting the bullet and just buying the current model.

In the past I've always bought my apple laptops at the very start of a product cycle and have had time to research, this time I haven't had any time to research and it seems to be the end of a cycle. I know that only apple know when things are being upgraded/released, but if you were in my situation, what would you do?

Here's the breakdown of all of the 35W dual-core processors viable for the 13".

The i5-2410M is the current low-end processor. The 2520M and 2540M are much better. AES-NI (FileVault performance boost), VT-d (Virtual machine access to hardware), vPro, clock speed, and the graphics all lag on the i5-2410M. If Apple does decide to move onto one of those two processors for a spec bump, then it's definitely worth the wait.

However, on the high-end 13", there is really no improvement at all. Their only difference is 0.1Ghz. If you're going for the high-end, then just buy now.

Late 2011 MacBook Pro across the board 13", 15" & 17" will have...

Liquid Metal Body
1/10 of an Inch Thinner
1/2 Pound Lighter
CD Drive Removed
Bluetooth 4.1
USB 3.0

And ofc you got this info from a friend of yours who recently attended IDC and an insider from Apple - or better yet a reliable source who happens to know Tim cook IRL - told you this.

Thanks for the info Prodo123

I'm looking at the low end. I wasn't planning on buying another a computer so don't really have a budget for this at all so need to spend as little as possible. I also looked into refurbished prices but here in Australia there isn't much choice (no current base model 13") and the discounts are along the lines of 8%.

I'm not too concerned with longevity as I plan to scale back my personal computer use at home once I've graduated. At least my usage won't be as demanding in the coming years.

If the base 13" model can deal with my files appropriately right now (300-500MB photoshop cs5 is what my current MBP can't cope with) then I am probably in a position where I should go ahead as any waiting will also slow down my productivity. I've always bought at the start of product cycles though and I know if a new one comes next month, I will be kind of disappointed.

Yep I know what you mean. I'm holding off for the Ivy Bridge MBPs.

March / April release. Apple will probably release new MBP in May.
That's cool. Well it's 3 or so months until the end of the year now, by the time it's Jan 2012 it'll only be 3 months or so to the new ivy bridges MBPs xD

That's 7 to 8 months away...

Impossible, that would mean an other 210 to 240 days.

That would be 420 to 450 days before refresh...
That's not gonna happen I think.

I would rather believe that apple would shift to AMD than that they would let there MBP's become that out-dated (remember that the previous update, only included faster CPU's).

No, we will only see a BTO or CPU bump with maybe slight RAM or HDD changes in the base models (i.e. 4GB -> 8GB and/or 500Gb -> 750GB0. I think the Ivy Bridge revision will be huge and bring Ivy Bridge CPU's, more TB stuff, better GPU, better screen res (for 13"), Liquidmetal/new chassis, ect.

Apple is concentrating this fall on iOS, iPhone, iPods and probably a much needed refresh of the Mac Pro.

Which is why I think we'll see a small spec upgrade.

I'm sort of in the same boat as abc123. I have decided that I NEED a MBP for various reasons. I can however only afford the base spec 13". My options are buy now with the educational offer and get the £65 gift card or I can forfit that and wait for the refresh. A refreshed model coming out a few weeks after I drop the cash would be a bit of a disappointment to say the least but so would waiting to be told that the refresh only improves the more expensive models! What do I do?!

If you NEED a computer now, get a computer now. Why is it such a hard decision? No matter which one you buy, it won't be the latest and greatest for long... definitely less than a year, so again, who cares? What exactly will you be disappointed about? The current generation will be a significant upgrade from your dying machines. Buy it, use it for a couple of days, and you won't even care about what comes out next.

There are two types of people here:

1. People that use the Mac for work and buy what they need.
2. People that like shiny things and will always buy the best of the latest and greatest.

It sounds like you guys belong in the first group - buying what you need and not upgrading every year. Don't buy into the hype. It's not even like you're buying top of the line models and maxing out all the features so just get what you need and move on with your lives. No point wasting days waiting and losing productivity while waiting.

That would be great if the high end model 15" comes with 1TB HDD and 8GB. When do you think they will refresh the MacBook Pro line up? October? :)

Liquid metal? LOL. Next time I'm at war, I'll be sure to take this laptop instead of armor.
