XCode is better in Leopard anyways. Better for newbies.

Does anyone think that Dashcode will be able to create widgets (like Weather, Stocks, etc) for the iPhone, or will stuff like that need XCode?

My concern over access/charging etc is that if there isn't a way for corporations to put apps they develop on devices that they own then they may not be buying many devices.

Then again, putting a music player & a camera on the device probably makes a lot of companies wary of purchasing it in the first place.

I thought the delay was because they were getting the SDK to work as an extension to Visual Studio and scrapping all that cocoa nonsense for the .NET framework. :D

It was always going to be a Mac application and heavily XCode based (if not a part of XCode). I took that as read the moment it was confirmed an SDK would be coming.

I predict an upsurge in Mac mini sales :D It's least expensive way for non-Mac developers to get something that will run the SDK. Was always likely that the SDK would be an extension of Apples existing development tools - so I don't see why anybody should be surprised.

Now - where did I put my ADC membership details...

leopard only? thats terrible news.

Time...to...upgrade! Welcome to the state of tech, where your OS changes every 2 years (or less!). Get used to it.

On topic, I am really looking forward to see what they have planned. I hope there is the option for free software, and I think it's totally fair for Apple to take a small (< 5%) cut of the commercial software that they will distribute using their servers.

I will be the first one to say it....

POWERBOOK G5 TOMORROW!

SNAPPIER SAFARI TOMORROW!

NEW PLASMA TV TOMORROW!

NEWTON VERSION 2 TOMORROW!

AND ONE MORE THING.....IPHONE MINI TOMORROW!

You forgot:

MAC OS X FOR NON-APPLE HARDWARE TOMORROW!

So, is Leopard going to be needed to install the applications on the iPhone?

I am running 10.4.11 on my 1 ghz 12" Powerbook and am prolonging buying/ installing 10.5 for as long as possible, or until i replace my internal hard drive. My last internal HD died when I did a major OS upgrade, so I'm hesitant but would upgrade if it meant sweet apps.

It saddens me that the SDK is mac only. Like me there are developers that are interested in developing for iPod touch but don't have access to a Mac and will not in the foreseeable future. I admit that buying a mac mini is an option but buying one just to do for-fun development for the touch seems rather dumb. And i already got a good quad core main computer and big screens so buying a iMac or Mac Pro is not really an option either. If there only was and inverted bootcamp for us whit non apple hardware to run osx (i can dream can't I) :(

Since the current toolset for jailbroken touches works fine on Windows/Linux lets hope that they can adapt it to output SDK compatible binaries.

No, unless you plan to use the SDK to develop software for the iphone/touch.

SDK Availability

Since the SDK will be a pre-release version (if the rumors are correct) it may only be available to ADC Select and Premier members.

This isn't a toy. It's a tool for developers.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU like Mac OS X; en) AppleWebKit/420.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.0 Mobile/4A93 Safari/419.3)

What's the chances of the iPhone/iPod Touch's built in iTunes store being used to buy and download apps??

So? What does 'toy' have to do with anything? I'm a developer, I don't have ADC Select or ADC Premier.

I second that.

I tried installing 10.5 on my 733 G4 and had to go back to 10.4 cause it was crazy slow.

Looks like i'm gonna need to use a friends or get the guys at the store to let me do it there.

One more thing... new iMacs today for you to write lots of lovely iPhone apps on :D

I think you've misinterpreted me. It's just that some people here think they are the target audience for the SDK. They aren't - the SDK is a developer tool. Nothing more, nothing less.

i don't think the games will be limited to certain country's, can they buy the current iPod games?

Prior to iTunes opening in NZ in 2006, it wasn't possible to get the games here (short of using a foreign account).

Apple does not deserve a portion of revenue for distribution on iTunes. That's just not a good idea in what could be a very innovative and powerful productivity platform. Do you need Apple's permission to publish a podcast? If anything, software writers should allow Apple to post their wares, and let Apple have any advertising revenue...

I'll bet there's a free way to introduce applications on the platform within a year. Apple should be happy to promote the platform. If they want to charge people - let them build their own software.

Apple gets a cut of everything that is sold in iTunes. I don't see why this should change with software. So long as its not too big a cut.

If my memory serves me right, the 733 G4 was introduced in 2001 - so you are complaining that an advanced OS released in late 2007 won't run on a machine built in 2001. Why don't you get real. Plus the fact that the thread isn't even about user installs of Leopard but about the requirements for the iPhone SDK.

Yes that's right. Still, Xcode is a developer tool, but it's available for everyone. Anyhow we'll see :)
