Apple today seeded revised third betas of iOS 16 and iPadOS 16 to developers, along with the first iOS and iPadOS 16 public betas. Both of these updates add a new Lock Screen feature - a full-screen music player.

Since iOS 10, the music player on the Lock Screen has been available as a smaller card-style player that only takes up a small portion of the screen with a miniature version of the album art.

With the latest iOS 16 beta, album art is shown front and center, and a separate smaller music player is available below it for controlling playback. The album art dictates the color of the background of the Lock Screen, but if you tap at the bottom of the display, you can go back to your standard wallpaper and minimize the player.

To get back to the album art interface, just tap on the album icon on the minimized player.

The larger music player on the Lock Screen is part of the iOS 16 Lock Screen overhaul that allows users to customize their Lock Screens with unique colors, fonts, and looks. Apple demonstrated the new full-screen music player at WWDC, but it was not available in the iOS 16 beta until today.

yep, also works with Spotify 👍🏼

One thing that is taking a little used to is the right amount of „push“ from the bottom to get to your notifications from the lockscreen. I went straight to the Home Screen multiple times before finally giving it the right amount of push to stay on the lockscreen.

Sounds like you’re swiping up from too low down the lock screen. As long as you don’t swipe up from the bottom it won’t open the Home Screen and will show your notifications.

You are right. I guess it seemed unnatural because I was worried to pause or skip the song by swiping to close to the music controls

Happy they added this back, and happy it can be made smaller too -- updating my iPhone now to the newest beta.

One thing I don't really like is how the controls are on the bottom now although getting used to it quickly... and really dislike how the forward/back buttons seem to have a smaller 'pressable' area. I don't have CarPlay so I was able to skip songs without looking at my phone but now it has to be pressed exactly on top of the next track button so hopefully this update fixes it somewhat

The iPad is getting nothing this year. iPadOS 17 seems to be when it catches up with iOS again
I figured that was the case, but per the article.. it mentioned ”both” was getting a full screen Music Player LockScreen. I’m fully aware that iOS 16 is the one getting the redesigned LockScreen with widgets and the whole nine.

Still no option to Like/Dislike, loop or shuffle. Who spends more than a second to look at the album art that Apple felt making it bigger was what people wanted?
I agree with the additional controls and hope the volume slider is back as well as an "Accessibility" option for the old touch targets. I have large hands and even with the Pro Max, find it super hard to drag the new progress bar for songs.

I have to disagree with your comment on the album art though. Album art can be beautiful and I like how they're presented in Apple Music even on the Apple TV, compared to what Spotify does (I hate their UI, even worse on the TV, no matter how good their playlists may be).

I have no problem with the album art and it can be prominently featured in the Musis app itself. But on the Lock Screen? How many people stare at the album artwork on the Lock Screen for long? I still don’t care as long as it doesn’t sacrifice functions that would be useful, but here it does (and always has done as these functions have never been directly accessible). At least give the user the option on what they want
