I absolutely love the sound of this feature. Just hope they drastically improve the camera. Because I would just use it all day.

Yes. It would be very useful if Apple activated the geocoding in iPhoto as well. Not much use if it's only on your iPhone. (The key is having a helper app. that can take GPS information from a GPS tracker and upload it with the photos)

Exactly- This would easily be done through the time stamping on the images. The devises just need to talk to each other.

Not sure if you have seen this from appleinsider, it basically says that Apple are looking to recruit camera engineers for the iPhone. If this is a recent request I myself wouldn't be counting on the camera being upgraded just yet.

Here is the link if you are interested:

So, couldn't it be that Apple may have improved the lens on the new phone and this job is just to develope a better software to work with the new camera. Thus, allowing advance photo via a 1.2.X update.

From this line:

The hire for the company's Cupertino headquarters would study present and future CMOS camera technology with an eye to implementing it in the iPhone...

It seems to me that the engineer would be more hardware than software orientated.

I smell a fake.

Either Apple is ignoring their own UI guidelines or is just falling off... but I have never seen "OK" in an Apple dialog box. Apple recommends an active verb to initiate the action—in this case, "Use" would probably be used instead of "OK".

Second, that dialog box is unnecessary. Apple would either set it for you automatically with a preference or not. Apple has also never referred to its applications directly either. If you've just taken a picture, it's pretty obvious it's from the Camera application. It would probably be better phrased such as "Use your current location with this photo?" with "Don't Use" or "Use".

It's a beta. They will fix the UI/grammar in final.

You must be new to Apple if you believe that. :)

I too was surprised by the use of "OK" in the dialog, but wondered if maybe the issue was that "Use Location" (which would have been a better choice) didn't fit in the button. I suspect though it is just the usual modern Apple ignoring guidelines - and wouldn't have truly been surprised if the "OK" button had been on the left instead of the right.

It may be a photoshoped image, since I agree the language is not up to Apple spec, but this is a reality.

The SDK already revealed that GPS code was found in the camera code. Geo-tagging is diffidently on its way.

if only the folks on LOST had one of these...

Ah yes, the iPhone Lost Edition.

* The GPS screen asks "Camera would like to use your location. [execute]"

* All your stored contacts have the same phone number: 4815162342

* Signal strength is terrible, but you can occasionally tune in to a French woman broadcasting a distress message.

* It only has one button on the interface and you have to press the darn thing every 108 minutes.

* You can call any of your friends named Jacob, but you may be too limited to hear anything they try to tell you.

* Please note: the iPhone Lost Edition is only available to people with "daddy issues."

Maybe someone already mentioned this, but I find it interesting how not too long ago, we saw a commercial dogging Vista for it's constant "Cancel or Allow" dialogues. Hmmmmm.....

I have to disagree on this one. I took photos at the NY car show with my phone and people actually thought I used a stand alone camera.
It could use more megapixels though.

No offense, but they probably didn't know much about photography or they haven't owned a new digital camera since the 90's. More megapixels wouldn't help you, it's sensor size that's important. Adding more megapixels to cameraa phones (to a certain extent) makes their photos noisier.

not sure if this was mentioned, but should the options be:

"Cancel" / "OK" ?

"Don't Allow" just seems weird to me...

That's a horrible idea, and totally against Apple's guidelines. You shouldn't have to read the message at all to understand what the buttons are about.

As for the dialog, I'm thinking it won't pop up if location services are already on in the preferences.

Now THAT is awesome. Think of the possibilities...

You're researching a city you want to visit, and you find photos based on its location. Amazing. I can't wait to have the next iPhone in my hands.

no offence meant, but why the hell is that amazing? worth buying an iphone for? there's more to cities in the US of A you know. I know you could've meant a city somewhere else in the world, but cities are cities - very similar. There's a lot more to the world.

What possibilities do you speak of?

I see these job ads as meaning that the current lead camera engineer has burnt themselves out creating the camera for the new 3g phone ;)

Fairly nice, but I am more than a little concerned that we're seeing lots of things like this, but still no sign of basic UI functionality improvements that have been required since day 1. Surely things like horizontal keyboard in all apps, functional bluetooth, copy & paste, file upload, voice dialing, radio remote support, MMS, wifi podcast download, search worth a damn in YouTube etc etc etc should be getting fixed first? And *none* of them seem to be getting fixed in 2.0 so far.

I'm hoping that they're just been kept behind close doors and will be there come June 9th, but it is concerning that there seems to be no sign of them.
