PLEASE CAN SOMEONE WITH THE 2.0 BETA TELL ME HOW BIG THE 2.0 OS IS NOW VS. THE CURRENT 1.X.X??? I am wondering how huge the OS is getting with all this new stuff.

Sorry for the caps and size but I have asked this is several different forums and can never get an answer.

ah.... exactly the point I was looking to add on to...... why would anyone want to switch back to 2G? .... why even offer this?
why not just make the phone 100% 3G....

actually, i can understand if one is not in a 3G network and has fall back on the 2G... but wouldn't this be "automatic"....

so back to my original question, if you are in a 2G and 3G network..... why give use the option to switch to the slower network?...i would guess there has to be some kind of performance difference...

guys????

I used to do this routinely on my Blackjack when away from the office. I'd make it until about noon using 3G and then have to switch back to EDGE to be able to make it through the rest of the day before getting back to my hotel and the charger.

I'm looking to forward to seeing how long (with my usage on the road) I can keep the new iPhone in 3G mode. My guess is they've been able to improve the battery life over what they would have had if they had included 3G last year. But still not as good as EDGE of course.

"For those of you who are going to "turn off 3G when I'm not using it" you'll actually be making your battery life worse, when in a passive state 3G is more efficient than 2G.".. actually what about this quote....

now i am confused

Don't be. I explained this concept in this very same thread (I see a pattern here with you... :) ). 3G UMTS/HSDPA is more power-efficient while idling in a standby state, however it uses more power during voice calls and data transfer. So if you are mostly on standby, leave it on 3G. If you are a talking on it all day, put it in GSM mode. I myself will never turn 3G off. My phone seems to last plenty long although I don't talk very much on it.. I'm a big email/text user.

Welcome to the world of Apple, well... Steve Jobs at least, "excuse extrodanare"!

They way the Apple community are talking you'd think every European had a nuclear power station strapped to their phone.

It was a fib, an excuse, a bending of the truth, Apple designed the phone from the American market and they hoped the pretty menus would be enough to shift them in Europe, it didn't work.

If you believe for a second this phone could not have been 3G from the start then you're deluding yourself.

The iPhone definitely could have had a 3G chip, but because of the slim form-factor and soldiered battery, people would be screaming even more about battery life. I myself am surprised at the criticism leveled at the iPhone as is, I can only imagine if they had put an older UMTS chip in V1.0. Also, you can discount the progress that can be made in 18 Months especially in "newish" technology like UMTS/HSPA chipsets. Over a year of chip revisions and optimization and a process shrink (say from 110/90/80nm down to 65/55/50nm) would surely make a large difference in battery life

Can you show me where you got this information, I'd love to read it (mostly to be convinced you're right)

I have had a 3g capable phone for quite a while now (i live in the UK) and my current one is also HSDPA capable, it has a switch to turn 3G off. Turning it off results in 2 things:

1: it runs on the slower 2G
2: the battery lasts longer

this is whether its idling or being used.

I know this just from general reading I've done online, but let me try to find a link to something...

ok, I got one.

http://www.anandtech.com/showdoc.aspx?i=3036&p=3

This link goes to Anandtech review that did battery testing on an iPhone and a Samsung Blackjack, a windows mobile 3G phone. Running on 3G during heavy data usage, the WinMo phone lost 25% of it's battery life compared to GSM/EDGE (although gaining 5x the download speed). On the "mostly-Idle" test, in which the phone checked email every 15 minutes, but otherwise was completely idle, it lasted longer with 3G turned ON, but only by about 5%.

On a related note, The iPhone absolutely killed the Samsung Blackjack in battery life. During heavy web browsing on EDGE, the iPhone lasted over 120 minutes longer than the Blackjack... ending up with about 60-70% better battery life. And this on the iPhone which has a much faster processor and video processor, and complex operating system and web browsing software. :)

You're probably not getting an answer because the information you're seeking is under NDA.

Ok maybe. but all I'm asking for is the size in comparison to the current OS version and that doesn't seem like much when we have leaks on specific features almost every day now lol.

They should change the title of the article and the thread for a laugh to:

Latest iPhone 2.0 Firmware Has On/Off Option

For some sad reason I thought that was pretty funny....

iphone os 2.0

The current build of os 2.0 for the iPhone is 194.4mb the previous build of 2.0 was 171.7mb. I don't know the build size for version 5 of the sdk beta released a few days ago. And also just to let all you guys and gals on macrumors, I work for at&t and our website is stocking the iphone refurbs again. The 8gig is $249 and the $16gig is $349. We are expecting them in the stores any day now, I work just north of Boston, so our area is getting them. I am not trying to start a war, so don't blame me that at&t is selling them at that price, remember don't shoot the messenger.

that is cool.

i'd run edge most of the time and only switch it to 3G for browsing. My Blackjack's battery has always sucked and I think part of it is due to using 3G. There is a way to switch it off, but I haven't bothered yet.

Lol, you do realize there's no point to that, right? Browsing with 3G is what kills your battery life... it's not having 3G on but having the phone in your pocket.

We will see how much it drains it.

I am sure it will be a heavy burden for the battery but I still think we will get a solid amount of time on the phone even with usage for 3G during the day

Before the original iPhone release, we had people talking about how we would get only 1-2 hours max on our iPhone if used it somewhat during the day phone/safari/ipod wise.....and that is not even close to being true
