So would it not be more cost effective to buy last years pro model, possibly refurbished, then the current years low end model?

The problem is OS support. Apple tends to discontinue OS support just because, without any technical reasoning. They usually go by generations. This means non pro iPhones from 14 onward must be assumed to get 1 year less of support at the least than the Pro models since they will always be 1 generation behind.

Such lousy strategy. It's time for Apple to disclose their actual support roadway for their devices. I don't want to be spending a premium iPhone price for less support.

More competition is definitely needed.

We had plenty of competition 10-15 years ago... Symbian, Blackberry, Palm, WebOS, Windows Mobile, Windows Phone, etc.

But consumers ultimately chose Android and iOS because they liked what they were doing versus the other guys.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Makes sense. Who is even using the full power of any phone nowadays?

I have absolutely zero reason to upgrade my iPhone X other than wanting but not needing better battery life.
Yeah but Apple will stop delivering updates to your phone. So you will have to upgrade sooner or later.

Apple are definitely channeling customers to their most expensive iphone models.

But this chip strategy does make sense as it will provide more differentiation to entice customers to go to the high end products in order to get top of the range features such as camera tech.

The other benefit will be to extend the shelf life of their last gen chips. Which will benefit Apple immensely.
The total shipment of a chip won’t change. Still one generation of standard iPhones and one gen of pros.

Not a big deal, IMO, as Apple (and the devs) will still need to cater to all the iPhones currently sold by Apple, starting from SE2022, iPhone 11, etc.

I’m assuming that they are also doing this so they can update the pricing tier, considering inflation as well.

iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max $1199/1299
iPhone 14 and 14 Max $999/1099

A 13 pro will be better buy than a 14?.
Benchmarks wars are over!. Apple is quitting. I guess the rest of vendors will do the same.
An M1 Pro or M1 Max MacBook Pro is a better buy than an M2 MacBook Air, so yes it’s possible an iPhone 13 Pro could be a better buy than an iPhone 14.

At the price Apple charges for the normal iPhone, they should get at least the same gen chip, maybe just make the one in the Pro a bit faster/more capable.

Last year I traded in a 2018 "high-end" iPhone Xs for a 2021 "Standard" iPhone 13 Mini. The 13 is the best iPhone I ever had and I have owned 4 phones, going back to the iPhone 5. The 13 is lighter, easier to hold, has better battery life and a much better cellular modem. The standard 13 would have also been an improvement, if I had gone for the larger size than the mini. Both of the "Standard" phones were a much better value, in my opinion. My biggest beef with the "Pro" iPhones, besides the higher price was the weight. The stainless steel construction made the phone much heavier to hold. I am mildly disappointed that going forward the newer "standard" phones will no longer have the latest processor chips. But with the rest of the differences being unchanged, I will likely stick with the "standard" models anyway.

I guess I don’t see an issue here for most consumers. Biggest possible issue could be more limited longevity of these phones years from now. That or Apple dropping support for them sooner than pro models of the same year.

Other than that, I doubt the average user (talking general public, not users here) will notice any difference. As long as cameras, design and other aspects are updated, it will still be a new model.

Why would anyone buy a 6.1” iPhone 14 over an iPhone 13?

Why would Apple even make a 6.1” iPhone 14?

Maybe you'll stick with last years processor but they will ramp up the ram to make up for it

People believe bigger numbers are better. All things considered, more sampling is better but the noise and image characteristics for equal output would be the same.
It's been proven in cameras that downsampling a higher res file reduces noise and increases detail compared to the native lower res file..

Probably means a price increase then and this will be used to help justify it.

So - if the iPhone 14 (non-pro) does not get the new chip, the new 48MP cameras, and the new pill-dot notch replacement, all of which goes into the iPhone 14 Pro – what is the selling point of the iPhone 14 (non-pro)????? Surely just more RAM is not enough to get people to upgrade? What am I missing?
You’re missing the part where Apple has no motivation to entice the 14 shopper: that shopper will pick up whatever “free” phone the US carrier will give them for agreeing to a 3 year stint.

Looks like the standard iPhone 14 and 14 Max models will be the worst iPhones ever and subsequent lower end iPhones are going to be just as bad. Now I’m definitely never buying a lower end iPhone again

Yeah!! Give them more $$! That'll show'em!

I mean… that’s exactly what they want.
Is not that the difference in price is vast....! Apple wins, whichever choice, and if I am honest, 99% of customers won't notice any difference at all between chips. It makes all the sense in the world.
