Mmmmmhh...
Not sure it would be wise to invest in an M2 Generation Mac Studio.
I think it'd make more sense to upgrade it to the M3 Generation.
You mean for Apple or for the consumer who already has an M1 Mac Studio?

For the consumer, it's not worth the incremental upgrade, but for Apple, it's literally just an SoC swap and bam, it's done. Little to no work at all required. Why would they refrain from upgrading their lineup if a new SoC is available?

Makes no sense to release Mac Pro with an M2 Ultra on 5nm... IF they can pump out a M3 Ultra in the same year... MacPro is a flagship performance product and the chance to show that AS is going places performance-wise that Intel/AMD is going to struggle to match. BUT With A15 based cores it will not be possible to accelerate Ray Tracing to reach Nvidia numbers.

They will likely jump over M2 for Mac Pro and go M3 directly for that reason primarily. Unless they somehow can implement Ray Tracing in M2 Ultra...

They are basically the only costumer for the 3NM nodes in 2023... They have bought all the capacity for 3NM production at TSMC for the whole year. Intel had to push back their orders until 2024. SO... They are planning to push out ALOT of 3nm silicon in 2023.

My guess is most of their best selling stuff goes 3nm in 2023, and possibly AR glasses and whatnot else.

Well there we go... Scratch that I guess :p ...Although the article does say TSMC is doing workarounds for 3nm SRAM implementation...

I feel like having processor design in-house makes for apple being able to design around issues easier, however the SRAM at 3nm seems to be a rough problem that affects the entire industry. Some hope that 2nm will see solutions.

I guess we will see come 2023

No mention of an iMac Pro.
There are also reports that Apple is working on a higher-end version of the iMac dubbed the "iMac Pro," a name used for a discontinued iMac model. Gurman says Apple remains interested in the more high-end iMac option but that the product has faced delays internally.

Is this big enough to see? You might've missed it the first time.

Next year's tech budget includes a M3 iMac in purple 💜. I so need to up grade current one which acts as local and remote media server. So impressed by my brother's  Watch Ultra that I could not wait another year and my partner just received hers yesterday - it's a Festivus miracle! Perfect watch for surfing / pool / resort swim up pool bars / beach. Wish list for next year includes another TV so guests can enjoy whatever is available in living room. HomePod mini speakers for outdoor entertainment areas. Upgrades / installations of GME UHF units and glass mount antennas in both cars this month. Us Aussies make the best GME UHF radios. 8+ years in searing Australian summers and still going strong. Decommissioning my Nokia 6.1 on 29 December. Screen is separating and the phone is still functional! That phone has taken several years of heat and sand at beaches. The most robust of my Nokias. One survivability test Nokia failed to demonstrate with their XR20 5G was withstanding the Australian summers. I love technology and look forward to what  creates next year.

Mac mini

m2-mac-mini-screen-feature.jpg

The Mac mini is Apple's smallest and most portable Mac, a popular option for customers who enjoy its portability and versatility.

Mac Studio

mac-studio-studio-display.jpg

The Mac Studio was announced in March 2022 as the highest-end Mac desktop until the Apple silicon Mac Pro arrives. The Mac Studio features a similar concept as the Mac mini, but in a larger form factor with more ports and performance. The current Mac Studio is offered with M1 Max and M1 Ultra chip options. For an update to the Mac Studio, we haven't heard much regarding any significant changes but could see an update with the M2 Max and M2 Ultra chips.

The Mac mini is Apple's smallest and most portable Mac …

Um a Mac is not portable unless it can be used as such! This sentence should be changed to

“The Mac mini is Apple's smallest and most portable desktop Mac…”

Regarding an event to announce the M2 Pro/M2 Max MBP 14/16” , not likely as only the chip would change and nothing else. Unless other hardware featuring the M2 like the Mac Mini to be announced alongside it then sure.

It’s been a long time since the M1 Mac Mini debuted, almost 3yrs now so if no Pro chip debuts then im hoping a lower tier Mac Studio with M1 Pro comes along even if only 2 TB4 ports in back is available that would still rock!! Since $2499 starting price in Canada lands this too close to the 14” MBP with GPU that has 4 more cores but 2 less TB4 ports seems odd.

And an Apple Silicon Mac Pro is long overdue. At this point, considering latest rumours of M2 Extreme being scrapped it’ll debut in 2024 at the earliest while the Intel rig may get a spec bump in the cpu. Basically we got Murtaugh but not Riggs ;)

We disagree. Yes the MBPs will get serviced first because they are overdue. But once M2 Max yields are cost effective it makes sense for Apple to also put them in Studios sooner rather than later unless there is some unexpected chip production problem. No way will it be 2024 before Studio shifts to M2 chips. Tech vendors keep improving or they die.

Personally I do not consider the Studio to be a "specialized desktop." IMO the Studio is the solid midrange multipurpose Mac desktop servicing folks dealing with images like art directors, photographers, etc. Me.
At this point I would consider all desktops to be specialized given how laptops have grown in popularity. And a Studio is a more specialized one just by virtue of the price. I speak as someone who has a Studio Ultra.

I.e. “be happy with what you got” because everything in 2023 is a minor spec bump or completely unknown (e.g. Mac Pro). Apple blew its load with all the M1x products last year and early this year, now there’s very little to be excited over.

They really ought to have bumped up the specs by now with newer Intel processors. The competitors do it every year, why pay for 2019 versions of the Intel Xenons?

Honestly I don’t think there’s much to be gained from an M-series Mac Pro. The M series is all about efficiency, which is less important for desktops. It doesn’t play well with expandability. Your “M edition” Mac Pro is the Mac Studio.

Interesting to watch a company as organized and well-funded as Apple struggle so visibly to reliably create and release a product line. It's a deep insight into how uncertain the outside factors are in their production process. Considering the current environment in China, I'm not expecting a more normal release schedule in 2023. If anything, we may see some shortages of current products in the first Q2023....purely speculative of course but things are dire there at the moment and Apple hasn't shifted production elsewhere yet ( as far as I know...).

The Mac Studio could be a stop-gap machine that never gets an update and fades into oblivion.
If the Mac Pro is only slightly faster than the top Mac Studio configuration, perhaps Apple doesn’t need to sell the Mac Studio anymore. It always felt like a stopgap machine, kind of like the iMac Pro–a powerful niche Mac that was filling the space between Mac Pro models. If the Mac Studio is a one-and-done machine, no one would be surprised or upset, especially if an updated M2 Pro/M2 Max Mac mini and the rumored iMac Pro revival arrives next year as well.

I think the Studio won't be getting any updates for a while. I am hoping for the M2 Mini as I want to upgrade from Intel-based Macs myself.

Where is the 27” iMac?
Most likely dead. But I can be wrong. Who knows what Apple is cooking?

But I think Mac Studio or Mac Mini and a Studio Display is the new iMac 27".

But I enjoy reading all wishes. I do understand all who sits with aging/old/half-dead 27" iMac's wanting and new one.

Whatever Apple comes up with I wont regret buying my Studio and Studio Display - absolutely love them. But sure, it did costed a bit more then I estimated a new iMac would’ve.
But I might have done the same choice if they had released a 27" iMac at the same time. Because I feel it is a better option with separate Mac and a Display, and those who don’t feel like paying for th ASD they can buy some cheaper display, not Apple.

Mac Studio wont go anywhere, but it wont be updated more often than anything else Apple.

How about a 14" M1 Pro MBP with an external display. The base model is discounted in the states at $1599 USD, how about the UK? Then pair that with a 27" - 32" 4K display for about $400.
Thanks for the suggestion but I'd rather have a desktop computer with plenty of USB ports to connect various pieces of ham radio equipment plus I already have an M2 Air I could hook up to an external display if I wanted to. I'm happy to wait a bit longer!

After a couple recent incidents of using my M1 MacBook Pro, I am readying myself for a new 14” MacBook Pro.
Hopefully M2 Pro.

With the financing model many people use to buy phones, it makes sense for Apple to dedicate whatever resources it takes to keep the release cadence as stable as possible.
Really? You think this applies to iPhones only? Same thing happens with the AW, and computers get regular incremental updates. Not as on schedule as, but nonetheless.

just prognosticating based on Apple's ever-increasing focus on maximizing profit above all else.
Since when is a company focusing on profit and growth something new? Apple has always done whatever they could to maximize profit. You make it sound like former Apple execs just wanted peace love and harmony and were not interested in profit.
