While I have read here on MR about some folks experiencing swollen batteries, most seem to happen during charging and not while wearing the watch. Not questioning that it happened to this guy, but a class action suit does not seem appropriate.
My Series 0 started selling in this exact situation. It was plugged in all the time and used for Nightstand Mode. I gotta say, it was a pretty fun experience to open it up and get the battery out!

Apple: give our fans the usual treatment, lol
*makes watch with crappy battery*
Only 999$ for base model, 1999$ for Pro Plus Cook edition
*watch pops open, near battery fire*
Apple: whoops!
Apple fanboys:
*cry behind a fake smile mask*
"Noooo! ****! Apple is best cutting edge tech not like some explosive Samsung Note!
Also Apple fans: We'll sue you! We have nil warranty/reclamation rights in our "first world" country, so we'll SUE!!!11

Lawsuits mean nothing if Analysts keep overblowing Apple’s PTs
Yet for the most part they keep blowing those PT’s out of the water. Sure they miss it every now and then and stock takes a hit then 6 months later they are $35 above the missed PT

I personally wish to thank Tim Cook for the job he has done with the stock price as I finally made over the 7 digit figure, personally though the main reason I am happy is that means wife and daughter will be taken care of due to the fact I am terminal and most likely be gone by June July if my oncologist is correct on the time line of 2022. It was a hard struggle to make it to that figure and I am not bragging is showing off. I am personally grateful that my wife will be fine as well as my our daughter

You can use it as shark deterrent, use the detached screen to slice the shark lol
Or perhaps the OP is rather MacGyver talented and he carries a Leatjerman Tool and some spare wire with both a Phillips and flathead pocket tools and can rig up the battery to electrocute the said shark but MacGyver grounded himself so that the electrocution will spare him, lol.
Sorry people just a little light humor.

My series 0 screen popped off a few years ago due to this. I was getting out if the car.

Apple replaced it out if warranty. They were quite aware of the defect.

Earlier this year that replacement series 0 had the same thing happen, this time while I was wearing it in bed. Since I only wore that one for sleep, i taped it closed and kept using it.

This lawsuit has merit because A. Apple knows batteries swell and B. Doesn’t safeguard the screen from the battery.

Battery swelling has been an issue for decades. It made my 2012 MBP unusable even in clamshell because it pushed so hard against the trackpad. It even disabled a USB port. Replacing the battery returned the computer to normal.

I’m curious why the Series 7 wasn’t included in this lawsuit. Unless, they’re aware of some change/modification Apple made to the S7 to try to avoid a situation like this. I just bought a S7 three weeks ago.

Lithium ion and Lithium polymer (mostly used in RC) are both essentially portable energy bombs. The fact we don't have explosions and fires daily in modern society is a miracle.
The fireworks shows of lithium battery powered cars I see about once a week in Hangzhou are pretty wild. Large fire coming from the bottom of the car with giant sparklers going off as the cells cascade. Had a battery pack that ballooned up in my desk too, no burning, no class action lawsuit in China… This is just what happens when these are breached or have a defect (through high temperatures, impact, etc)

Question: When it states apple should either allow more room in case the battery starts to swell OR protective guard to keep it from contacting the screen face.

So..... protective guard ... stopping the battery swelling ....surely this would cause increased pressure around a dodgy battery? woudln't that increase risk of it exploding??

Anyway, not had this with any of my apple watches (S0 alu, S0 SS, S4 alu and S6 Alu) The Mrs did have it happen to her S0 on charge, got a swap out for an S1 so was happy but that and her S5 since have been fine to this day.

Sometimes it does make me wonder, was the guy who sliced his arm still driving the golf cart when he did the injury? I know it wasn't a public highway but surely by trying to replace the screen whilst in motion he was driving without due care and attention, and probably the reason he sliced his arm because he should have stopped to assess the situation??

Nah, just wave your AW at the shark, even if it is in fine condition...

Shark after seeing Apple Watch waved in its direction: "Holy crap, the battery in that thing might explode! Need to find easier food source! Gotta go, by!"

Thinking about it, it could be Apple's new marketing campaign for their watches 'Ever felt fearful of going into the sea for a swim? Well never fear, Apple Watch is here. Sharks will never bother you again. Only $599 at a Apple store near you'

? ? ?

I look down, see my watch battery has swollen and broken the screen. Two options for how to proceed: 1) carefully remove the watch so as to avoid injury, 2) make sure I cut myself on the obviously broken glass in order to initiate legal proceedings against Apple.
So, which option did you choose?

Ya know, I'm the first person to crap on Apple when I'm not happy with the product or their decisions. The CSAM thing was such crap. My second MBP had the flexgate issues, and Apple tried to screw me with the repair cost. Amex had my back there. The keyboard on my current MBP sucks. I'll never buy another Apple laptop again without going to the store and pawing it up substantially before I walk out with it. I'll always use my Amex so as to double the warranty (better than Applecare IMHO if all you want is the warranty coverage) at no extra cost.

But my Apple watch 4, and the one I bought my wife have been going strong for almost 3 years now. Never had any issues with it, it wears well (I do take care of my stuff) and still holds an excellent charge. I wear it every day, and I think for the money, it's one of the best tech purchases I ever made. It DOES get warm when it charges, and it's warm for about 15 seconds when it comes off a bump charge, which is rare.

I've had similar experiences with my X, Xr, 12P and 13PM. All were/are excellent products.

(it)'saul good, man.

You have to live in the Philly area to get it. He's one of the local ambulance chasers that buys a lot of commercial time on local news. The commercials are so kitsch they're funny....

How do I get involved with this class action suit? This happened to 2 of my Apple Watches. Incredibly disappointing that these devices basically self-destruct

I was not suggesting that, if I were in the Android system, I'd probably have one.
just that the poster I was responding to seems to be posting rather negative comments about Apple and apple products in general so I was encouraging him/her to give a a product review - and I am not naive enough to believe that would happen ;)
I would give several good reviews for several Android phones. Such as Motorola.
I use both iOS and Android and sometimes I wish I was using Android as my main phone because of YouTube Vanced etc.
People can post negative reviews about Apple. I have problems with my MacBook not recognising my USB hub anymore, but it does work on every Windows laptop that I have etc…
My USB-C hub isn't working on macOS Monterey? if you''d like to help me out and help me fix the issue. It used to work on a Mac and now it doesn't.
Sometimes Windows and Android work better than iOS or macOS and if you deny that you're blind.
