It’d need to function differently to be worth it. So for example, depending on what room it’s in, any video calls from saved contacts will be automatically accepted. So a seamless experience with calling loved ones and chatting with them. No fumbling to accept or anything.

Things like video calls, home automation, iMessage, etc appear on the lock screen with nothing to open or press.

Basically live widgets on the screen.
So where is the privacy?

So.. an ipad with a stand, but welded together? What am I missing?
It’s welded to a HomePod. Only place I can imagine this is in my kitchen, blaring out recipes and admonishing me I use too much sugar in my cake. ‘Cause of AI watching and all👨🏻‍🍳.

Oh, put it on wheels and call it WallI😉

No I didn't. Its an internet forum people post under their own login, their views are their own.

You said “Apple TV is a good example of this, great device but very overpriced for what it is.”

That’s a statement of fact, not of opinion. That’s why I initially replied giving you the opinion words, that it’s a bad value for you.

In any case, I don’t care that you continue to argue, my goal wasn’t to teach you (though that’s a hope), but to point out to everyone else reading that your statement of fact is wrong :)

Last post on this because you've derailed the thread with tedious off topic pedantry.

It's an internet forum, it is implied that what is posted is the opinion of the forum member. Do you think every single post should be qualified by 'in my opinion' ? Weird.

It’s not implied. Even if many many many people didn’t assert their opinions and assumptions as fact and argue that they’re right, especially in anonymous online forums, statements should be taken at face value by default. A declaration should be taken as a declaration. If there is no “imo”-type qualifier, it shouldn’t be assumed and inserted by the reader just because they think it would have been more appropriate. But also many many many people assert their opinions and assumptions as fact and argue that they’re right, especially in anonymous online forums.

Yes. It is called an "iPhone".

This rumored device is just an iPhone and a deskstand/charger. Well, actually a little less than that. The "iPhone" has no cellphone features, no rear-facing camera, and most of the apps are removed. But otherwise it is just am iPhone on a stick

If you wanted this functionality you could place your old phone (with no SIM card) on a charger stand. As long as the old iPhone could run the latest IOS, you'd be good.

What does this do that a cheap used phone can't do?
Wow. You got all that from a couple of alleged references using what seems to be Apple product code. You deciphered not only what it is but also the features, or lack of them, as well.

Apple TV with M chip might not be necessary.
In a way, the mini can probably do everything ATV can, just with a Mac interface. Apple controls everything.
They don't pay someone else for anything. If they didn't need so much profit, products could be priced more favorably.

Nothing is free. Apple doesn't manufacture their own silicon nor do they mine the materials. An M-series chip costs Apple between $40-$90. Memory is expensive and AI needs at least 8GB. These chips are not suitable for a $99 device where Apple is competing with "free" cable boxes from ISPs. Steve Jobs spoke to this effect, he knew it even way back then the challenge it would be to grow the Apple TV installed base which is why he always called it "a hobby".

HomePods and Apple TV's will almost certainly rely on connected iPhones which themselves do have have Apple Intelligence capable silicon and they'll rely on cloud servers to run a Siri LLM as they do today with legacy Siri.

I’m curious, what do you expect it to not be able to do that you think it should?

My point is Apple doesn't pay another company like Intel or Microsoft. It would be nice to see Apple TV take advantage of all that storage.
The other big streaming devices have about 8 GB storage at best. The Mac mini is overkill as a streaming device.
I'm thinking of an Apple TV Pro, for lack of greater imagination, selling for $299.

Holds no interest to me. Not because I wouldn't want it... But nothing Apple's been marketing in years is something I'd look at spending such a considerable sum of money on.

I have a 17" iMac G4 that I use already in my kitchen. Ok, I don't really, but I could. And it would be nothing like whatever Apple may be planning... but it would be better in every way because it was a freebie.

You can't speak on behalf of the 'vast majority', sorry.
there are PLENTY of studies that show that.
and lots of people in forums saying the same.

or a sound quiz that showed listeners did barely (3%) better than random guessing.

so it's quite clear the VAST MAJORITY cant tell. :)
