Given that Apple Arcade is a paid subscription, Apple may be doing exactly that. More memory, an M-series chip and seamless integration with the Vision headset. The Vision headset could have been one of the final pieces in that plan.
Yours is an excellent vision.

Can you not use your router in pass-through mode? That's what I do, and still use my many AirPorts. :)

No it’s a modem/router that i lease from my internet provider. It’s not configurable other than ssid and password unfortunately. I like having a single unit since it’s a cable modem and is pretty limited to where i can place it

Because i don’t leave the drive plugged into a laptop (mbp). With airport, backups were wireless to the hard drive on the router.

I guess not everyone has a home server

we have an old Mac mini in a closet and every computer in the house backs up to there

m-series apple silicon does not have the gpu power to compete in the console space

you should be able to configure it however you want

your isp should be able to provide you with instructions

you can get a pretty good sounding pair of speakers for $600

much better sounding than those apple things

that's why they don't take off
You miss the point. Sure you can get good $600 speakers that sound good in a good listening environment. However a pair of full size HomePods are unmatched by any bookshelf-size speakers at any price for self-adjusting to provide very good sound in a smallish acoustically difficult environment.

the last thing I want any speaker to do is self adjust

I recognize that that is a matter of preference though

Spot-on. Many people forget that HomePods assess room acoustics and adapt accordingly via beamforming in order to provide an outstanding listening experience in almost listening environment. It's pretty neat signal processing that works incredibly well in almost any environment.

I just want something between the size of the HomePod and the HomePod mini that is also a WiFi router and has an M1 chip for Apple Intelligence. Charge $249 for it and I’ll buy 3 or 4 to sprinkle around my house. Although I would definitely need an ethernet out port for my ethernet switch. Maybe they could sell them in a bundle where you get the base unit to take in ethernet and allow connection to a switch and then you can add sleeker looking repeater units around the house with no ports. I just really miss Apple’s routers!

Gods forbid if Tim Apple ever gets Siri to accomplish something more useful than turning on a light or playing a song. Gee, how about self-diagnosis of self-help with various software/hardware issues?
I kid you not. Half the time when I say “remind me blah blah” it asks “who’s speaking?” When I say my name, Siri says “Hi!” 🤦‍♂️

Seriously? That looks uglier than the 3rd cousin of Echo dot and Google Home’s first love child.

I don’t get it.

Are you saying that Echo Dot and Google Home are third cousins? And they had a love child? And that’s why their child is ugly?

Or are just saying that that Echo Dot happens to have a third cousin. And that third cousin (not a blood relative to Google Home) happens to have a child with Google Home? And the child is ugly (but… for no particular reason)?

What???

I have two original HomePods and about five Minis, so I like them basically… but Sonos Five plus their big Sub sounds worlds better than Apple. I recon when they give their 360° speakers a more powerful version, this could even improve. The HomePod needs a compatible Subwoofer..

Wait a second…if most people get that wrong, then your “we” is wrong. Most people want separate display and computer again. Especially now that the display can have built in Smart TV functions, not even need a computer, and the computer can be anything from a phone to a MacBook to a Studio Max, or all three.
I meant it more as in most people talking about us “all-in-one-ers”, not necessarily most of the costumers. And yes, I agree, most of the customers today want separate devices for computing and displaying, but there’s still our iMac minority.

When reading about this leak I immediately thought about the personal AI devices like Rabbit or Humane and all their shortcomings. Maybe Apple is targeting the same category (AI Assistant) but they won't make it portable. Instead it's stationary, coupled with a decent speaker and display.

Something like a... "Apple Intelligence Terminal" :D

Considering the current Apple TV identifier is 14,1, the fact the unreleased models‘ identifier is AppleTV14,4 and AppleTV14,5 indicates this is a minor speed bump unfortunately. Maybe from A15 to a more recent A chip?

Would be nice if this is a “Home Intelligence Hub”, designed for home automation and media consumption, that adds Apple Intelligence to existing HomePods and Apple TVs on the same network. All Siri enquiries could be instantly routed via this new device, adding Apple Intelligence to the whole home. I’d buy that.
