I really want this, but I don’t know how I feel about no Dynamic Island or Face ID. The former provides me with a lot of useful information in my experience and the latter maybe still isn’t as fast as 2nd gen Touch ID was, but is inarguably more secure.

The regressions are quite telling
  • Reduction in outer screen size from 6.3" (for Pro) down to 5.3" (Smaller than the X/XS/11 and IPhone 7/8 Plus)
  • Reduction from three rear cameras to two (presumably no telephoto)
  • Moving back from FaceID to TouchID
Seems like a lot of compromise for a device costing $2k or over. I guses the camera could potentially use a folding optics system to allow one camera to do wide and telephoto, but that's probably not going to be compatible with a thin phone.

why is that?
Because Touch ID is crap in comparison to Face ID, and the fact that by the time this comes out I would have been using Face ID for about 9 years, so I don't want to go backwards in technology.

It's a bloody nuisance that Touch ID still exists on the current iPad Mini, I hate it. Not to mention you can't use Touch ID with gloves on, so that's not great during the winter, and it tends to be unreliable if your fingerprint is slightly damaged with a cut or something else, and you have to make sure your hands are not damp or dirty, and then you have to make sure you only use the fingers you scanned. Touch ID absolutely sucks, Face ID I just look, and it works no matter what the weather is, if I'm dirty or full of cuts and bruises, and it works no matter what I wear.

Apple would be stupid to go backwards, but I wouldn't put it passed them, plus they can say we made Face ID work on the second version.

I am curious, what do you use Dynamic Island for that it has become a must have feature? I am on my first iPhone with the Dynamic Island (17 Pro Max) and not sure what it really brings to the table that I could not live without.

No FaceID would really be a bummer. I find it unfortunately finicky on iPad but for iPhone it's about as close to perfect as I can imagine being possible. Touch ID on Mac has poor reliability for me, haven't had a TouchID iPad in a long time.

I imagine the Dynamic Island will stay around as some kind of software-only feature. They put far too much developer/API effort into it to just completely drop it.

Yup, lack of telephoto lens is the 2nd reason for my no-go, and I would love a foldable
Instead of bringing the innovation “A game”, Apple insists on crippling any new device category to play it safe.

I use it all the time for audio/video (on my Apple TV) controls; I love not having to exit the app I'm in or swipe down to get to the lock screen to control those things. And the little statuses for battery when I connect AirPods, live activities...

The Dynamic Island was the first software thing in years that felt like a real "wow this is great" thing that Apple software used to be full of.

Yawn. Another overpriced i-device that no one needs yet will be consumed and discussed ad nauseum for ever more. I really cant wait for the review from all my favourite youtubers like MKBHD and that guy Luke Miami. Not forgetting the really important stuff like how easily the screen scratches from JRE. This is the stuff of wonderment and excitement. I for one just can’t wait. Hurrah!. Or not.

The answer is nothing. It brings nothing. It’s only a thing becaue they gave it a catchy name ‘dynamic island’ wow. I dont wanna miss out any islands, even dynamic ones. Take my money.

I have wanted this device for a long time. Day one purchase. But I won’t because I’m not going back to touchid.
Seems a bit strange that a device you say you have wanted for a long time but you won't get it because of one feature like FaceID. You would sacrifice all the other stuff you wanted simply because you have to use your finger instead of your face? It could do everything you ever needed in a device but because of how you login that is what ends it all. I think you have probably not really wanted this device for all that long or ever. While I prefer Face ID, logging into my phone is the least of my concerns for what it can do.

The no FaceID thing is so strange, but there are enough rumors about it at this point to make it seem like it's definitely going to be TouchID only. It was 17F here this morning, the idea of having to take a glove off to use a phone outside in the winter is pretty much a non-starter, and I'm otherwise super interested in a foldable.
It’s 25C here and sunny, I always have to seek shade to use Face ID. So happy to see the return of touch id. Can’t please everyone. LOL

The device is said to prioritize thinness
Doesn't bode well...
Sweat or moisture can reduce its effectiveness
After working with sandpaper TouchID doesn't work for at least a day lol - I used to store my left pinky as one of the fingerprints since it was the least affected but sometimes even that would fail.
Going back to touchID after years of faceID sounds like a MAJOR downgrade to me
It also reeks of overconfidence in how quickly they could scale down the FaceID tech
