Sorry, but premium models that cost the most should inherently come with premium features. I will be confused if this sells well. Perhaps 2nd or 3rd gen ones after they realize what customers actually want for $2-3k in a phone. They may have to slow down (as if they haven't already) in making the pro models the best so they can slowly put these better features in the fold one

isn't the premium feature the fact that it will fold from a regular size fold to that of an iPad mini or close to?

I just bought the iPad air. Peeved it doesn’t have Face ID but I wasn’t upgrading to the iPad Pro for that.
Yeah, when I got my iPad Air, the M2, also looked at the IPP in store but wasn't going to pay an addl $400 or so... that's why a foldable is so compelling to me, I think I would retire my iPad, but not with those 2 lacking features

TouchID is the password, same with FaceID, both of which you have to use periodically as well.
I'm aware you have to use your password after you reboot or update your iOS. Going back to TouchID is a non-starter for me.

The device is said to prioritize thinness, with several major design decisions reportedly made to reduce the overall thickness of the chassis.
...
The leaker states that the current engineering prototype features a 7.58-inch internal display equipped with an under-panel front-facing camera, often abbreviated as UPC.
Both together don't make sense. The prioritization of the thinness was the reason why Samsung (unfortunately) ditched the UPC in Fold 7.

I’m also in the “no Face ID is a dealbreaker” camp: I just greatly prefer Face ID to Touch ID, it works significantly better for me and when I use a device that has Touch ID now I find it annoying.

For something I’m using as much as I’m using my phone, I don’t want to go back to Touch ID if I can help it.
While I'm not in the deal breaker camp if it has to be touch ID. I too much prefer FaceID. I'm kind of hoping they build the camera system into the hinge or something. At least the selfie (while open) camera. I personally don't need a foldable phone. I don't like the crease that I see on other foldable. And I don't like the main screen material either.
Not to mention the price will be more than I would want to spend on a phone anyway.
I fully hope to have all my expectations exceeded of course. And they put some kind of new material glass out on the main screen that is some how hard like glass but, bends exactly where it needs to.

If folded size is like an iPhone mini and run unfolded iPad apps with Pencil and same external display support, it's my nextComputer.

Going to be a great year for innovation, a phone that unfolds into an ipad, an ipad that doesn’t unfold into a home device and probably a mac pro with a mac mini inside it

AppleCare gonna be $20/month for this thing and not eligible to be added to One haha

No way they have solved the inherent issuses with folding phones

Oh yeah- $2099 USD

Many of the same people in this thread proclaiming their excitement for this phone and Apple trying something new are the same people who championed the iPhone Air and then lambasted it when finally released.

Fingerprint scanner on the side of my Fold 7 is good but I also have Face Scan with it. It would be nice to have FaceID along side it for Apple's first foldable but we shall see when we get closer to release. I hated under screen internal camera UPC though on previous Z Fold.

The no FaceID thing is so strange, but there are enough rumors about it at this point to make it seem like it's definitely going to be TouchID only. It was 17F here this morning, the idea of having to take a glove off to use a phone outside in the winter is pretty much a non-starter, and I'm otherwise super interested in a foldable.
Don’t forget there’s the passcode fallback. May be ok if you’re only outside a small portion of the day.

I personally much prefer Touch ID to Face ID, but of course ideal would be having both.

Chief among these is the use of a side-mounted Touch ID fingerprint sensor.

Absolute non-starter of a product then. Side Button Touch ID is garbage. Straight garbage. The worst user experience Apple has ever shipped. What an absolute shame. They might as well not even ship it, because it is unusable in this.

Face ID is far superior to Touch ID, but I wouldn't even object to an under-screen Touch ID if it was absolutely necessary. But this? Hell. No.

It's not like we're even talking about Touch ID in the way it once existed on iPhone. We're talking about the absolute trash implementation from the iPad Air making its way to a $2,000 flagship iPhone. That's a joke. An embarrassment.

TouchID is a no-go for me.
At the rumored price point it gotta have faceid, don't care about the "thickness"
same. I am currently on 13 mini and am definitely interested in a foldable but no FaceID would be a deal breaker for me. I went from an old iPad Pro to iPad Air a few months ago as it was much cheaper than a new Pro and I figured I'll be fine with what it offers and going from FaceID to TouchID would not be a big deal. Boy, was I wrong. I regret this decision every day. Have to manually enter the pass code waaay too often. Will not make the same mistake again with a phone.

why the name calling? I simply do not have to enter my passcode when outside, FaceID works just fine. certainly way more reliable that TouchID
Out in the sun wearing cap and sunglasses… Face ID fails 100% of the time. And that’s no lie!

yea, as I've said in another post, my success rate with touchid is maybe 60% on my iPad Air, that simply wouldn't work on the phone.

I am curious, what do you use Dynamic Island for that it has become a must have feature? I am on my first iPhone with the Dynamic Island (17 Pro Max) and not sure what it really brings to the table that I could not live without.

I really appreciate having it for Apple Music controls and it’s absolutely killer for food delivery via Uber Eats or DoorDash when you are in meetings and have a million other things going on. Same goes for requesting an Uber or Lyft ride. I suppose I would still be fine with Live Activities replicating that information on the lock screen though.
