Why can't they bring back the flat back with no camera bump design like in iPhone 4, 4s, 5, 5s, SE 2016?

If they are going to make the camera bump that large, they should make the phone thicker so it will be a flat back just like in the old days...

Samsung s23 series features clean spare lens design and a rich feature set and produces quality photos. So, the ugly lens lump doesn't have to be there to avoid crappy specs. It just is, for some reason. Maybe Apple execs think it makes iPhones look distinctive.
So buy the Samsung. I’d much rather have a better camera than a flush design. Form over function

Moving back towards a single size for the base iPhone? Kind of like the set up with the XS, XR and XS Max (5.8", 6.1", 6.5"). As neither the mini or plus seem to sell especially well I wouldn't be surprised to see them go back to this type of lineup.

...but a new leak suggests the base iPhone 15 model will have a slightly larger display.
I smell lovely rumours cooking in the kitchen... Could the iPhone 15 Pro Max (Ultra?) just be a modified foldable iPad mini after all? 😉

yeah everyone's already said it, but OH my GOD that camera bump on the left…

these designers are out to f—king lunch so bad that it's already dinner time

also, again: I'm sorry—do we seriously care about .1" more of screen real estate? yeah, my last comment about this got outvoted by a reply saying "yes we do, thinner bezels are awesome," but that small an amount of screen only matters to me on a smaller device (AW). on a phone with an already huge screen…it just…does not matter. unpopular opinion I guess

someone did say some time ago that the "Ultra" is being introduced so it can eventually be their foldable…smells like some good Apple instinct to me

Why would you want a crappy camera?
Good question, but most people just prefer the tiny cameras in their phone to carrying around a non-crappy camera. Less weight. Imho the real question is: Are you willing to have a heavy, large and expensive device with a large, asymmetrical and ugly hump that doesn't lie flat unless you buy it a case that makes it twice as thick - just because you want a slightly less crappy but still crappy phone camera?

After having tried the 14pro, for me that's a hard no (glad I tried it, though, because now I prefer my SE again over lusting for a device that's triple the price but even worse in some regards)

The camera hump is just getting ridiculous now
As someone who uses the front of the phone more than the back, and also as someone who uses a case, it can continue to be and it has the freedom to continue to be even more ridiculous in the future.

The camera bump is something we can literally turn a blind eye on.

FYI the 9to5Mac article correctly lists the larger camera bump as the pro. Macrumors has it backwards for that image (they are not consistent on Pro on the right / non-Pro on the left in the original article)

Here is my prediction:

Apple will also release a slim battery case where the back of the case is flush with the camera bump, then claim best combined battery life on a phone. It will only be wireless charging so there won't be a bulky connection port on the bottom. Its all part of the marketing and sales strategy. ;)

People who want big screens will want bigger screens…. Just make 7 inch iphone and I am in.

I actually believe it's because they don't have the talent anymore to redesign it.

I suppose you're right, but I wonder how hard it could be.

I don't mind function over form in some cases but the camera lenses in the current lump are very hard to keep clean. Especially since on the Pro model they enclosed it with stickier non matte glass. It gets very messy despite my being quite fastidious about keeping my hands, pockets and handbag clean. I haven't had quite the same problem with my Samsung camera lenses now that Samsung has done away with odd protrusions.

Anything between 5.4” (like mini) and 5.8” (like X, XS, 11 Pro) would be great!
This. I switched from a 13 Pro to mini & have realized 5.4 is the perfect size for a phone. 5.8 is tolerable. I won’t be buying a new phone until they make something smaller again.

Also these camera bumps are totally ridiculous. Time to think up something new Apple!
