And what about the ever growing group that doesn't want a big iPhone?

Apple seems deaf and ignoring a (growing) minority of its customers (not going woke here, just stating).
Apple could easily keep this part of there customers happy, they don't want all the bells and whistles, they just want and iPhone with the latest chip at max size of the iPhone 12 mini.
Why the silence to that group of users?
And don't get me started about the provability, Apple swims in cash like Scrooge McDuck. And on top of it all would make a lot of people very VERY happy.
I just went back to the SE. It's great. The last iPhone for normal people.

The 13 mini is still sold by Apple.
The question in your reasoning is why the latest chip would be so important for those people, and not the other bells and whistles?
Myself, I have a 13mini. I want the 48Mp camera module so I can have a good quality 2x zoom.

Triple camera aluminium fullscreen iPhone in 5" (mini), 5.6" (regular), 6.2" (Plus) and 6.8" (Max).

Single camera 4" and 5" budget iPhone SE with home-button and SE1 styling. Very clearly a budget iPhone, priced accordingly.

All start at 128 GB. No heavy stainless steel model, no Pro branding and no numbers.

Two models: SE (in two sizes) and iPhone (in four sizes). Nothing else needed. Update biennially. New colours in the gap year. Same chip in every iPhone (including SE) to streamline app development and battery life advancements. Feature parity across the models—mini gets every feature Max gets. Smaller screens mean physically thicker phones to increase battery life of the smaller models.

Good question, but most people just prefer the tiny cameras in their phone to carrying around a non-crappy camera. Less weight. Imho the real question is: Are you willing to have a heavy, large and expensive device with a large, asymmetrical and ugly hump that doesn't lie flat unless you buy it a case that makes it twice as thick - just because you want a slightly less crappy but still crappy phone camera?

After having tried the 14pro, for me that's a hard no (glad I tried it, though, because now I prefer my SE again over lusting for a device that's triple the price but even worse in some regards)

Judging by the camera comments in other threads people do prefer better cameras and don't care for the bump. I definitely don't. Just read what all those people want. More megapixels, more zoom, night sky sensors to shoot stars and planets. And I feel the same. I don't need a professional camera yet I want to make cool photos with a big zoom and night sky mode with my iPhone.

Because I have a real camera, and I don’t want or need my smartphone to be a lumpy brick. Users like myself shouldn’t be limited to the iPhone SE.
Yes they should, you are in an extreme minority and shouldn't be catered to. Most people will prefer a slightly bigger camera bump which literally doesn't matter , just looks slightly worse but get a getter camera instead. Literally almost no one carries a big camera with them, most people just prefer to take nice pictures with their phones

I went 13 mini. Basically same physical size but larger screen and better battery. You can find renewed ones on amazon for a little over $500.

The camera is just too crappy on the SE these days. I do miss touchID though - face ID is super annoying in a lot of scenarios. (esp in bed)

I don't disagree. I'm just not a big camera person, and I still think the SE camera is amazing. Five years ago it would have been considered amazing.

Also I despise FaceID for so many reasons.

I also find the less I pay attention to the stupid phone, the better my life becomes in all aspects. Long term life goal is to ditch the smart phone altogether.

The iPhone 38 will have an 8.3" display, which will be only slightly larger than the model that came before it.
The iPhone 99 will have a 14.7" display, promising to be only slightly larger than the model that came before it.

Yeah, it has become ridiculous at this point. The trend of sacrificing ergonomics and usability for the sake of the wow-factor has become absurd. In order to make further impact on users as they get used to fiddling with their two-handed phones, every other year they resort to increase the size further. It’s dumb.

I wonder if Apple's direction of design may be a big part Jonathan Ive’s departure. Apple's product line is also a mess at this point. Apple lost its principles of design when Steve Jobs passed.

Apple needs to have a middle ground Pro phone and believe that was actually the 5.8 iPhone X.
Even though I still thing its heavy, its still manageable; especially for one handed use.

This is what the iPhone lineup needs to look like:

iPhone SE - Touch ID phone - no frills iPhone, the cheapest at 299, easy to get super cheap discounts that can bring it down to 180. If you are an iPhone Pro Max user and you are concerning yourself with the 4.7 inch screen, I would just tell you to mine your own business. Its not for you. Its for people who just want a solid, well tested phone that works just like how their iPhone 6 from 2014 did. It has the latest SOC so it gets the latest updates. Its also great for businesses such as hospitals that want to purchase a cheap iPhone in bulk for nurses, doctors, staff and patient bed side phone. If one goes missing, its not a huge cost either.

iPhone and iPhone Pro - 5.8 inch screen - this is the for the standard phone for those who want a little bit more and if you need capabilities of the Pro Max in a manageable size, this is it. 699/999

iPhone Plus and Pro Max - 6.8 inch screen - You are basically using this to shoot RAW photos, low budget TV show, YouTuber and basically need an iPad Mini on the go. 799/1099

Last years standard model takes the 599 spot
The model year before that takes the 499 spot.

I disagree. Many users who want their phones to be efficient and ergonomic (4.7") for activities other than taking photos and videos would also benefit from pro features.

Especially in GUI design! Nightmare design at this point. Never could I have imagined 10 years ago, that today the average Linux distro would be more intuitive that what Apple releases now.

Gestures that are fighting each other, third party apps that are allowed to reprogram core functionalities (e.g., shaking the phone in Messenger prompts an option to send Meta feedback on their app). I can barely do text manipulation now. When I try to paste text into a paragraph, the menu for pasting text frequently fails to show up. Moreover, the gesture for reaching Control Center on phones with Face ID only works for right-handed people and cannot be changed, leaving out about 10 percent of the population. Mediocracy all around. It’s just sad to see.

Physics likely prevent bringing those capabilities down to that size. Also, this is a business, Apple wants to still upsell you to more expensive models. And might I add based my observation last summer at a tourist attraction the wide demographic of users: young, old, all had Pro Max iPhones and the token Android users with Galaxy Plus phones.

People love large iPhones and there is no escaping that. I travel on public transportation every day and observe the iPhones that are mostly in use; it’s Pro Max and Max models.

Why do you think the iPhone 6 Plus was such a driving force behind its success when Apple finally jumped from the small screen?

That said, the smaller iPhone is an important niche. But most people I see with such smaller iPhones usually are very older iPhones:7,8 6s.That pretty much tells me they are contented with the features of that phone.I am sure the photos you get from an iPhone 13 Mini are dramatically better than a iPhone 6s.

My karaoke buddy has one and he is always posting pictures in social media and sending over Messages. His previous phone, first gen iPhone SE. The niche need for a phone as small as the SE with Pro Max camera system is too small to justify the cost and engineering. We have examples of just the Mini two iterations selling poorly.

All is what you said. Not to mention the "where is the thing that used to be here that did what I needed" now being buried under layers of weirdness, if it can be found at all. One of the MANY reasons I just quit updating everything, security be damned.

It's clear that many people prefer larger phones as they see them as a replacement for multiple devices, whether due to habit or cost savings. However, there's a reason why different devices have different screen sizes - a single do-it-all device is hardly optimal. This was never iPhone’s intended use.

Apples was originally very thoughtful and principled when it came to iPhone’s screen size, as shown it this ad:

I've observed how people with smaller hands use their big phones, relying on acrobatic finger movements and large suction cups on the back to prevent their phones from falling. I don't think this is the best experience they could have, just as I don't believe people get the most out of movies by watching them on their phones instead of a big TV or going to a theater, which is another trend. It rather shows that most people settle for mediocrity.

Having options for different-sized hands, instead of one-size-fits-all, is completely different of course, just as Apple is doing with Apple Watch. If you're a videographer, a bigger screen than 4 inches could also be beneficial. The most popular cameras for professional photographers have a screen size of 3-4 inches. If certain "pro" features actually were difficult to implement in a 4" form factor at the time of release without adding a lot of bulk, then I would have been okay with those features being reserved for a larger model as well, such as one that was more tailored towards videographers.

Sales numbers are not a good indicator of good design, though, as most people are remarkably good at adapting to poor design choices.

Copy/paste and tap to select is a nightmare right now with iOS. Just try copying part of a URL.
