Yeah the classic wont go away. If anything it will stay and Apple will add a SSD to it.

They still need a "generic" music player for those who dont want wifi, a camera or any other of the gimmicks that Apple throws in its higher end ipods.

a) SSDs are too expensive
b) Flash is already doing just fine in the non-mechanical department for storage, and the touch is at 64GB already. 128GB will probably be released next year.
c) I'd rather them stay with the hard drives, cheaper and more storage for a cheap price. Besides, I've never had a hard drive fail on me in a iPod since I've owned them in 2004.

I don't think the classic is going to get removed or redesigned, it'll stick around for another year just as it is now. Might get some software updates, but any design changes completely kills the idea behind the "iPod Classic" name.

Still no word on single layer 1.8" hard drives, as of now it looks like it is still at 160GB.

Lets face it, we're a nitch on the market. I'd love to see a bump to 3" and a capacity update, but it won't happen.

Touch screen. Tiny iPod touch. Did you think the Click Wheel would live forever? It'll run iOS. They'll use a higher density display to squeeze the 480 x 320 resolution into it. (That's the res of the 3GS and prior iPhones/iPod touches.) That way, apps run just fine, as they did on the 480 x 320 res devices.

They should make two sizes of the ipod touch , a revamped shuffle and nix everything else. Start with the current screen size and shrink the form factor, move the button on the side then have a 5" model.

Brand New Details On the iPod touch 4G

According to a source who would have reason to know, the fourth-generation iPod touch is changing back shapes—sorry, readers who have been posting with love for the dome-like curved iPod touch 2G/3G back, but that’s going away. And it’s not going to be glass like the iPhone 4, for all of you folks who were fearing accidental shatters like the ones we’ve heard Apple Stores are continuing to see on a daily basis. The new shape is…

Familiar. Think of the top of a MacBook Pro, only smaller, which is to say flat rather than curved at the center—closer to the look of the first-generation iPod touch’s back, only with modifications. The rear camera is there, but there is still some question as to whether what’s next to it will be a LED flash like the one in the iPhone 4, or a microphone like the one next to the video camera of the iPod nano. We’ve been told to expect a microphone rather than a flash, with a continuation of the bottom-mounted headphone port and Dock Connector port.

And we’re continuing to hear from sources that the little touchscreen device—the one with the sub-2-inch screen—is being thought of as a nano rather than a shuffle, even though it doesn’t make much sense to us. We’ll know more soon enough.

...perhaps the square case isn't for a new iPod Nano form factor, but a new iPod shuffle. That would make far more sense, wouldn't it?

a shuffle that can snap on the hand wrist like a watch.... :D
hahahaa~! I had mentioned about it in the earlier page of the thread...

If Apple releases a new Shuffle that is remotely like the mock-ups posted here, I will buy one for certain.

The classic may stick around as many just want a music player. they dont want wifi or apps. Plus those same people have large libaries and want them with them at all times.

people who just want to have a music player will now be targeted by the new nano. apple is obviously changing the functionallity of their products. for example: the nano is going to be the new shuffle plus display and the touch is going to be the new video device that the nano used to be. now it is clear why apple didn't add the camera to the touch last time - so it is new and fresh now.

but 2011 will mark 10 years since the orgnail ipod.

sorry, you are right! even more reason to remove the old ipod now. it will create a nostalgic feeling when it will be back as a limited edition in 2011.

I think its pretty obvious. But 16GB? I think if your statement were to come true it will be 32GB, 64GB and 128Gb.
And again, its not ram, but storage.

16 / 64 and 128 is the marketing trick they always make (but i admit it works better with 8 / 32 / 64 GB). the trick is to have a low entry level price to seduce the people to think about buying it. then you ask yourself "but if i only add 100 us$ i'll get a lot more..." so you'll end up buying the second model.

So what did jobs mean by “we will sell tens of millions of facetime devices this year”. The touch is pretty much the iphone, but with out the phone. It can handle facetime just fine. (but since its an “open indristy standard” we could see desktop clients adapt the use of it and we could connect to programs such as WLM and ichat

i can imagine that the ipad is going to get a facetime-camera soon and that might explain it. apple is always very keen that the ipod touch is NOT as good as the iphone. remember: first the touch didn't even have a microphone connector, a loudspeaker or a volume button. when they shipped it, they even removed the "add date" function to the calendar!

they want people to buy iphones, not ipod touch as the cheaper alternative. they are always looking that you "miss" something and still consider switching to the iphone one day (for example by only adding a 3 mp cam or NO facetime support).

So pretty much a new shuffle then? Why go thoughn all the trouble of adding video and a camcorder to throw it all out?

i think the video-experiment on the nano didn't work out. it wasn't a very oftn used feature and the ipod touch is the much better machine to integrate the video functionality as it it also capable of editing the video on the device with the new imovie iOs app (it makes perfect sense now!).

the new formfactor of the nano is so close to the shuffle, that it is not necessary anymore. the shuffle often caused problems with the image. remember how people laughed about not being able to see which song is played or to select a certain song. apple haters bashed apple so badly with it, I also noted that most people didn't understand the concept when the shuffle was presented on a selling-desk with mp3 players from other brands.

but apple kept on sticking to the shuffle because it was necessary as the nano was to large to be "hidden" or clipped somewhere in a bag or on a t-shirt. the nano can do this now, and if they add the shuffles "voice control" and the headphone-remote it is a nearly perfect replacement.

the shuffle simply doesn't make any sense now. and before the shuffle canibalizes the new nanos market, they better force people to start with the new nano for 99 euro.

16Gb and 32GB this round. Dock connecter will stay

if you buy a 16 gb one it already has enough memory so you won't buy the larger one. the entry ipod has to be limited, so that apple seduces you to buy the larger one. that's the old trick apple plays with most of its machines, so why not on the ipod nano ;-)

Like I said. You just described the new shuffle.

the shuffle is going to be discontinued, the name "shuffle" is going to die. maybe even the name "touch" is going to die too, so that the touch is now simply the "ipod". then apple has the ipod (formerly known as ipod touch), the iphone and the ipad and of course the ipod nano. makes perfect sense now.

So you can get a 160GB touch then? There wont be 3 resolutions.
the touch is ram based, so it can not get 160 GB. it can get 16, 64 and 128. and who knows, maybe next year we can see an ipod touch with 256 gb of ram?

you might now say: 128 gb is not as much as 160 gb. but downgrades were never a problem with apple, they did that with the ipod mini too. apples marketing is clever enough to let you believe that you got the same value by telling you it is the same amount of SONGS... ;-)

Just saying, RAM is completely different from storage space. No computer has ever reached a RAM size of above 6 GB, let alone 128. ;)

And besides, it's already costly to make a single 64-GB chip, which incidentally the iPod touch doesn't have. I don't think we'll see a 128 GB iPod touch until the chip becomes cheaper to manufacter.

Those cases have sealed it in my mind: the nano is dead, and the Shuffle will get an upgrade to take it's place. It could run iOS apps, but only ones specifically written for it, like basic widgets.

Sure i'd like to run apps, but I way prefer my nano's click wheel over touchy guessing :(
(but yes, the video camera is just useless)

EDIT: Whoever was saying it'll be called iTV... this British broadcaster wouldn't be too happy about that.

Well the iPad wont be updated again this year. January we may see a preview of the new one that may go on sale by march.

they want people to buy iphones, not ipod touch as the cheaper alternative. they are always looking that you "miss" something and still consider switching to the iphone one day (for example by only adding a 3 mp cam or NO facetime support).

True, but then we go back to what Steve said at the iPhone event. Plus you can have facetime and still have a low Mega pixel camera.

I agree that the touch is better for video, but then again I never had a nano and don't know anyone that does. So I do not know if it was used much or not. no one does, expect apple (user studies from iTunes etc)

i like your thinking. Maybe we'll see the end of the annoying "itouch" crap. I mean do we call it an iNano? ishuffle? "iclassic" no.

Again. Its not ram based,. but flash based.

Ram

the touch has 64Gb. The iPhone doesnt since it uses a single chip, while the ipod Touch uses two.

I LOVE the physical design of the iP4 so I am sad to see it will probably remain tapered. It does make some sense to keep it distinctive rather than a phone-less version of the iPhone.

If the iPod touch has Retina I could see myself dumping my iPhone 4 for it. I will still be in the 30 day window.

i'm hoping this the shuffle and we get a nano simalr to last gens but full screen no click wheel.

Ii hope its the shuffle to and not the nano and i agree with the last gens with full touchscreen and a bit wider to accomidate bigger screen. Tthats my ideal nano. Not a small piece of crap

Agree with all of this except the ipad and itv, maybe eventually. I dont want a freakishly small nano to ake the shuffles place. Great thinking. im wit you on the nano thats what i want too

nano patent

I can see two volume buttons similar to the iPhone 4, a power button, and a slot for the 30-pin connector. Its more likely a Nano.

The question is...would it have a VGA video recording ability.

EDIT: I take that back.....I think it can be the new iPod Shuffle with a 30-pin connector. I just rememebered a recent patent the iPod Nano will be the same dimension however the screen is elongated to a widescreen and there is a virtual click wheel.

Where can i see this patent. i want to see it before september 1st

I seriously doubt that they are going to change the Nano to be like the shuffle (in terms of form factor). The more likely scenario would be a new shuffle with a tiny screen on it... my guess is (if these pics are legit) is that this is a case for a new shuffle, not a nano...

just doesn't make sense after all the hoopla around the Nano getting a camera, and ability to record video/sound, etc... that they would shrink it down to a size that would be unusable as a video recording device.

agree, we live in america and we hate the chinese

I'd bet a lot of money that the new shuffle is the stamp sized touch screen, and the new nano is similar-looking, all screen, but at the same current wide screen shape.

If you can imagine it, it will be a stunning device.

the nano would not be stunning, it would simply be gorgeuos in this form.

only problem i can see with that is supply constrains.
iPods are made in the millions Mac's are made in the 100,000's so while in the mac lines it makes sense to try and reuse as many parts as you can does the same apply in iPods.

If Apple are using too many of the same parts in different lines are they effectively competing with themselves for parts as each of the production house tries to get supply.

I think the models are about right i just think the larger iPod will push up screen size from the iPhone

it looks like the volume controls are on the back of the iPod touch case....

They will be on the side

I thought we hated North Koreans and middle easterns?

This American does not hate the Chinese. No sirree. Pass the twice-cooked pork and General Tso's, please... :D
Korean and Middle Eastern cuisines can be quite tasty too.

Interesting.

Personally I think the last gen nano was the best yet.

Agreed. I love mine, and I used its camera to document a family trip to Disney World-- fun times, and without a bulky dedicated camcorder to drag me down as we headed around the World Showcase at Epcot. In retrospect, the only thing I could do without on my 5th gen nano is the FM radio, but then again I gave up on radio more than a decade ago. Traveling NPR fans may find this function essential, however.

How about an integrated heart monitor/pedometer Nike+ deal on that tiny iPod. Very useful for Gym, better than using an iPhone or an iPod Touch.
