Yeah the classic wont go away. If anything it will stay and Apple will add a SSD to it.

They still need a "generic" music player for those who dont want wifi, a camera or any other of the gimmicks that Apple throws in its higher end ipods.

It's pretty clear the square case is for a new touchscreen iPod Shuffle (possible name change) and not the new iPod nano. The square screen is perfect for displaying album cover art, a virtual scroll-wheel or a basic touchscreen menu.

The iPod nano will probably just be a smaller version of the iPod touch. As I recall there were smaller versions of the iPod Touch screen floating around last year that have yet to be used. The square touchscreen part is dated last year as well.

Yes I remember it. I'm 20. (if you do the math my friend that would make me 11 at the time ;) ) whats ridiculous is how you kids just asume "oh it would be so freaken cool if there was a iPhone nano" it just sounds really silly

Just because every other cell phone manufacturer has 50 million models does not mean Apple will. Remember we are talking about a cell phone. Not an ipod. Two totally different markets.

Now if there ever was one and you kids kids are right it wont be that small unless you want to use Apples crappy ear buds and mic. Remember people want to make calls too, not buy a bunch of accessories just to make a simple phone call.

Just remember if your going to make a phone it has to be functional not just shinny materials.

Lets just get back on topic...
I didnt forget i just made a mistake and i did acknowledged it ..so
anyway doesnt matter...
the thing is...it is going to happen very soon..cheaper iphone coming
of course it wont be like the current one but one with far less options and its going to kill the competitors big time once and for all..It wont be very cheap but more a super light version tiny..so that you cant carry it around always easily

New iPod Shuffle: It can display one app widget at a time, but have fun trying to play Angry Birds on it!

You really think they sell many of the classic any more? I don't see how dumping one of the models that probably sells the least could be a disaster, maybe a few lost sales depending on the rest of the line, but most potential classic buyers would probably be fine with another model.

I meant more of a disaster for people (like me) who use their iPods for listening to music and having access to our music libraries. Another model would not be fine unless that new model has the same amount (or more) of storage at a similar (or less) price point.

Has apple ever promoted that idea specifically? Regardless of sizes available there will always be some people who can fit their whole library on whatever model and others who can't fit everything onto even the biggest model. And that second group will get bigger as people have more and more video. That's what smart playlists are for.

Maybe I'm not remember correctly then, but I thought the original marketing for the iPod was focused on the idea of having your music library in your pocket, and that's why with each successive release they increased the storage.

I can't possibly be the only person that still remembers that the purpose of an iPod was for listening to music, not postage stamp sized video and poorly controlled games.

I still don't understand what playlists have to do with anything, I scroll through my list of artists and choose which album to listen to, has nothing to do with a playlist. And when I'm out during the day and get in the mood to listen to something, I want it to be available, not something that didn't get synched that morning. That fact that it can be done now, with a large capacity iPod is great, the idea of taking that away and replacing it with something with smaller storage and a more expensive price point, just because it has some flashy touch screen, makes no sense to me at all

Seriously, why would Apple create a new phone, when the iPhone 4 just came out a few months ago? You're just spewing out a random guess based on nothing but your fantasy.

And since you're a mac fan for at least 17 years, you should know that this is a music/media-based event. Heck, even the invitations has a guitar on it, a big icon for music everywhere. A new phone would have no place for this event.

square screen matches pixel width of current nano?

The 240x376 pixels of the nano would be a 2.93x1.86cm retina display with 326 dpi. So assuming the claimed 3x3cm display is actually 2.93x2.93cm, it would be a 376x376 pixel retina display. Matching the pixel width of the nano and leaving 136 pixels for information & buttons while playing "wide-screen" video.

But at 60% of the width of the original nano (1.84" vs 1.15"), I doubt if its usable as video/photo player (unless it comes with a magnifying case).

+1 and I highly doubt iPhone 5 will be made smaller. If anything it will be the same size or even a tad bit larger (3.7" screen perhaps)

Smartphones are the future. How can a 1.8" screen be on a phone unless its a flip or candy bar style phone. That alone will be going backwards.

It wont be widescreen since the screen is still a square. Wide screenwould be like the current nano or touch (even if its still 4:3)

About the square one... I'm convinced that the 3cm touch screen fits there. I believe, the Shuffle becomes one with the Nano. The term "Shuffle" will disappear.

Once again, I have to say I'm sooooo glad to have bought a Shuffle 2nd gen as soon as they released it four years ago. Metal, Physical buttons, clicking without looking, Fast forward and backward, a clip, works with any headphone. This thing is priceless in my life.

The Ipod Shuffle has always been about minimalism, I doubt any new version would have a screen built in. It goes against the designs of the past. Also I doubt apple would want a bigger shuffle. The square design has to be a Nano replacement. It's not changed much (form factor) over the last couple of generations so I guess it's time for a new look.

(I have been drinking cheap wine tonight)

Finally an iphone nano for the masses people.Cheaper than the current iphone which will then be considered as a deluxe version, this one will be meant for the rest of the world meaning the less fortunate. And its going to be a killer again..Iphone nano ..it changes everything again

I'm not sure where Apple is going on this one.

Seems odd that they would go this route. I mean, they tried the more square shape with the 3rd gen, and seemed to admit that people didn't quite like that shape when they announced the 4th gen.

Maybe the shuffle is getting bigger!

There were people who liked the shape. I liked the shape. I was kind of annoyed when they went back to the long shape. It's the one thing I find a minus on my current nano. And when I sold my old 3rd gen nano, it seems the person who bought it specifically wanted a third gen (I posted it was on craig's list and when she contacted me first thing she asked was if it was a 3rd gen just to make sure).

So, there were people who liked the third gen shape. Personally, it fit a lot better in a pocket or other small area I wanted to keep it in (it's one reason I even need one over just using my iphone) than this long one I have now.

Since no one is mentioning a redesign of the classic and everyone is saying "discontinue". I will say CLASSIC WILL BE REDESIGNED!

True, obviously a square screen is not a wide screen. But maybe I'm missing the the point you try to make?
