Since no one is mentioning a redesign of the classic and everyone is saying "discontinue". I will say CLASSIC WILL BE REDESIGNED!

Hope your right the only ipod i;m looking at, hope they upgrade/refresh or will need to run down to the apple shop the following day to purchase a new 09 version. CLASSIC IS THE ONKLY IPOD I WANT!!! AND I KNOW A LOT OF PEOPLE IN THE SAME BOAT!

This story is so stupid. It's so obvious this isn't the nano's redesign... IT'S THE SHUFFLE'S. I'm not saying the nano won't go all touch screen... it probably will, but this is not it. This is the new Shuffle (which will probably get renamed considering the situation).

But it doesn't explain why apple would want to give up the larger, widescreen design of the nano. It just seems a little... too small. If Apple is going with this design, the ipod line will have a low-storage, feature-rich gaming touchscreen device, a large-high storage media machine, a tiny touch screen something, and an even tinier music shuffler. Seems like the midline device (the nano) is going to be replaced by something a bit too small.

agreed, if you look on the 1.7inch touchscreen the date says 2009. its 2010 its old and the cases are old pics too. somebody just wanted to stir up a rumor and say that this the new nano and touch. Its definetly fake or old pic. But the nano will not be that small ever.

Probably the shuffle. They add the video camera, screen, and accelerometer now its just all going away? doubt it

Neil "Nostradamus" Curtis' Prediction for 1st of Sept.

ok, here is my tought and I'm curious how exact my "nostradamus" prediction was when we hear what apple is going to show on 1st of september:

- first: apple is going to scrap the ipod classic! it doesn't make any sense anymore, apple can not sell apps with it and if they double the touch's ram to 128 GB the ipod touch is a good (but expensive) replacement.

- many people will be sad about this, but the ipod classic will re-appear as a limited "10 years ipod" edition in october 2012. to remove the classic from the product line makes this "limited edition" classic even more interesting in 2 years. a clever move!

- from now on, the ipod touch is going to be the main ipod. it will get a fresh new design and will have 16, 64 and 128 GB of ram and will cost 199 / 299 and 399 US$. it will get a camera and a higher resolution retina display and a gyroscope sensor.

- the target market will be music, games and the video filmers that used the nano to film. to different the ipod touch from the iphone it will NOT have a frontfacing camera and therefore NO facetime. it will also have a weaker camera compared to the iphone (3mp) but be a bit thinner.

- big changes to the nano: it is going to loose the camera and the clickwheel but will come in a very fresh and small square-formfactor. the device will be controlled via a squared multitouch display and a new user interface that will be based on cd covers but also lists like on the old nano. it will be shipped with the remote control headphones like the shuffle with volume and middle click button to skip, forward and start/stop the music. you will also be able to use the nano without looking at the display in a way like the ipod shuffle with voice output.

- a 4 GB nano will be sold at 99 US$, the 8 GB at 139 and the 16 GB one at 179 us$. to save money, apple might remove the dock connector and the dock. instead the nano will be powered with a tiny cable that is plugged into the audio-connector. there will also be a little clip on the backside to clip the nano onto a shirt. the nano will come in black and white as well as red, pink, blue, yellow and green.

- as the nano is so small now and agressively priced, they might scrap the ipod shuffle completely. remember: the nano can now be used like a shuffle and when the nano is in your pocket, it will behave similar like a shuffle, it will have the same remote control and the same voice output.

to clear up the product line has many advantages for apple. the removal of the ipod classic means the end of harddisks and its moving parts in the ipods. it also forces the people to buy an ipod touch which will broaden the customer base for the app store and apps mean money. the faster chip and the higher resolution will seduce old touch users to upgrade to the new touch and developers can focus on one resolution rather than two (actually 3 if you also count the ipad). apple is also playing the "want more...?" game with 16 GB ram for the entry touch but 64 for "only" 100 us$ more or another 100 us$ if you want to have the same space like in the old classic ipod.

even removing the shuffle has some advantages for apple: 99 us$ is a very seductive price for "ipod beginners", but still more than the 59 us$ they charged for the old shuffle. they will get 40 us$ more per beginner that would have bought a shuffle and is now forced to buy the tiny nano.

Oh my, what has Stevey done now!

I'd will guess that is a new shuffle, not nano. We shall see in 6 days!

Looks to me like they're merging the nano and shuffle into a low-end, smaller touch-based iPod, while repositioning the touch as the iPod for everyone else. It's not much bigger than the nano.

They'll probably also kill the classic if they do a 128gb touch. 4 iPod lines down to 2.

Also, iPod touch gets a front-facing camera, retina display, AND rear camera + flash? It's encroaching on the iPhone more than ever before.

- first: apple is going to scrap the ipod classic! it doesn't make any sense anymore, apple can not sell apps with it and if they double the touch's ram to 128 GB the ipod touch is a good (but expensive) replacement.

So you want a simi slow touch? I think you misunderstood "ram" for Hard drive space. The Touch may very well reach 128GB. if not this year, next - if SSD prices go down.

as for ram. I'm thinking it could have 512MB. Next year the 1GHZ.

The classic may stick around as many just want a music player. they dont want wifi or apps. Plus those same people have large libaries and want them with them at all times.

- many people will be sad about this, but the ipod classic will re-appear as a limited "10 years ipod" edition in october 2012. to remove the classic from the product line makes this "limited edition" classic even more interesting in 2 years. a clever move!

Yeah. I created that topic

but 2011 will mark 10 years since the orgnail ipod.

I think its pretty obvious. But 16GB? I think if your statement were to come true it will be 32GB, 64GB and 128Gb.
And again, its not ram, but storage.

- - the target market will be music, games and the video filmers that used the nano to film. to different the ipod touch from the iphone it will NOT have a frontfacing camera and therefore NO facetime. it will also have a weaker camera compared to the iphone (3mp) but be a bit thinner.
So what did jobs mean by “we will sell tens of millions of facetime devices this year”. The touch is pretty much the iphone, but with out the phone. It can handle facetime just fine. (but since its an “open indristy standard” we could see desktop clients adapt the use of it and we could connect to programs such as WLM and ichat

- - big changes to the nano: it is going to loose the camera and the clickwheel but will come in a very fresh and small square-formfactor. the device will be controlled via a squared multitouch display and a new user interface that will be based on cd covers but also lists like on the old nano. it will be shipped with the remote control headphones like the shuffle with volume and middle click button to skip, forward and start/stop the music. you will also be able to use the nano without looking at the display in a way like the ipod shuffle with voice output.
So pretty much a new shuffle then? Why go thoughn all the trouble of adding video and a camcorder to throw it all out?

- - a 4 GB nano will be sold at 99 US$, the 8 GB at 139 and the 16 GB one at 179 us$. to save money, apple might remove the dock connector and the dock. instead the nano will be powered with a tiny cable that is plugged into the audio-connector. there will also be a little clip on the backside to clip the nano onto a shirt. the nano will come in black and white as well as red, pink, blue, yellow and green.
16Gb and 32GB this round. Dock connecter will stay

- - as the nano is so small now and agressively priced, they might scrap the ipod shuffle completely. remember: the nano can now be used like a shuffle and when the nano is in your pocket, it will behave similar like a shuffle, it will have the same remote control and the same voice output.

Like I said. You just described the new shuffle.

Or they can start using STDs

- it also forces the people to buy an ipod touch
Doesn’t force anyone. Those who don’t want apps and such will just buy another brand.

- which will broaden the customer base for the app store and apps mean money. the faster chip and the higher resolution will seduce old touch users to upgrade to the new touch and developers can focus on one resolution rather than two (actually 3 if you also count the ipad). apple is also playing the "want more...?" game with 16 GB ram for the entry touch but 64 for "only" 100 us$ more or another 100 us$ if you want to have the same space like in the old classic ipod.

[FONT=&quot]So you can get a 160GB touch then? There wont be 3 resolutions.

On this one i have no clue at all. It could be an iPod shuffle or it could be an iPod nano. As for the iPod touch i really hope they atleast change the design a bit, 3 Years is really dragging it out. They probably will as when the iPhone design changes, the iPod touch design does.

The touch almost always followed the iPhone (first was a squared back. Then the round back. This year may be the iPhone 4 design)

You know, it could be a remote for the new "iTV".
I kind of doubt it being a shuffle, and definitely isn't a nano. The nano's size has always been the same (minus the 3rd Gen); I have a 1st Gen and compared it to a 5th Gen, it's the same form factor. So it won't be a nano.

I'm putting my money (which is imaginary) on a remote.

The touch hopefully will get the iPhone 4 shape and design.

I DON'T GIVE UP SIR - THE SQUARE FORMFACTOR HAS TO SUCCEED --
…and you can see only the front of the Touch.
Then look again! You'll also find the iPod Nano there, which looks unchanged doesn't it? So the new square is the... what? New Shuffle?

hmmm - I am wondering if I tease you a little more, will you break into Apples headquarter and shot a photo of the new Touch to convince me?

I hope so - if you will let me know. ;)
No thanks. Not a chance.

Oh and one more thing! Let's all say a well deserved farewell to The iPod Classic. It was such a fun to carry a brick. Remember this one: Time for the old to make room for the new.

why does everyone want the classic to go bye bye? Because it doesn't have that "magical, super uber touch screen with shinny, clolorfull icons and a app store with no porn, but you can access porn from the web broswer?"

If anything the classic will get SSD. People fail to remember that there are people who just want a music player - nothing else-

For me? I like the touch, but I know a few who just want a music player and the nano is too small for them and they do not want to make silly smart playlists
