Why is the entire top panel open?
Have you seen the back of the iPad 3G?
Aerials/antennas work really well through metal don't they?
*think iPod touch with the metal back
(presuming the leaked video of the case is real)
Why is the entire top panel open?
Apple's 3rd party suppliers ruin all the fun surprises!
honestly, what have we learned from this leak that wasn't obvious already:
-lighter
-thinner
-camera (FaceTime)
-no more bezel (like the iPhone 4 and 4th Generation iPod touch)
-no more curved design (like the iPhone 4 and 4th Generation iPod touch)
as well as the more likely to happen:
-more ram
-faster processor
-Apple's version of Retina Display for the iPad (not 4x the pixels like the iPhone/iPod touch, but definitely a higher ppi to make text and images look better)
-better battery life (just because they can)
That's probably wats going to happen.
Apple is so predictable![]()
Apple's "version" of the Retina Display? You do realize that 'Retina Display' is simply a marketing term, and means nothing, right?
I kind of think that is his point. He says: "(not 4x the pixels like the iPhone/iPod touch, but definitely a higher ppi to make text and images look better)"
So, Apple can make any iPad 2 screen that is higher res than iPad 1, and call it the "iPad Retina Display." The "version" for the iPad 2. Not the iPhone 4 "version."

It's a marketing term but it's called "retina" for a reason. The resolution is above 300ppi, making the pixels smaller than the human retina can distinguish. To call it "retina display" and still be able to differentiate the pixels with the human eye would be a misnomer at the least, bordering on deception. False advertising would not bode well for such a high profile product.
According to the type and origin of the leaks, historically, this would mean that the iPad 2 is imminent. If these are legitimate cases, then the hardware design has already been signed off as final and 3rd parties notified of the dimensions. It's as if Apple were getting ready to announce it within the next 30 days.
That's great and all, but if I were one of the millions of buyers or recipients of an iPad for Christmas, I wouldn't be too happy to see a new one come out immediately after.
I'm savvy enough to have waited but I know many who did not.
Nonetheless, bring on the iPad 2. I'm in.

Lol glad youre savvy. Meanwhile, I'm enjoying my new iPad and will sell it the minute macrumors is notified of a keynote this spring. I will then buy the new one![]()
....I also want to point out to some that current generation iPad cases have the same opening on the top as the leaked cases for the next version of the iPad.

Apple has defined the term as being a high enough resolution such that pixels cannot be distinguished at a nominal viewing distance. For an iPhone / iPod Touch, that's presumably around 10 inches. This means that the display on those units must be >300ppi. For the iPad, however, the nominal viewing distance would be more like twice that, meaning the display would have to have approximately >150ppi to qualify as a "retina display". And the fact that it is less than 300ppi wouldn't, in any way shape or form, make it a misnomer or a deception. It is all in the definition...
And what do you do if at the keynote it's announced that the iPad 2 will begin shipping on March 31st? Then you'll have to go two and a half months without an iPad! (Assuming the keynote is in early to mid January.)![]()

FWIW, if you desire the latest and 'greatest' then do your homework and be smart, but also know this: There will always be something new and 'better' just over the horizon.
