Apple wouldn't announce a product update that early before actual release. And don't give me last year blah blah. They were introducing an entirely new product, not updating an existing one.
Okay, I won't give you last year blah blah. But I will point out that Apple has announced more than a few product updates, not new products, in January which didn't ship until a February or March timeframe. Check your history. (Now, I'll also add that most of these were in the context of MacWorld, which was a set event not a specially scheduled press conference. So, in that light, you're probably right that there won't be that long a delay, if there will be any at all, between the announcement and the shipping of the new device.
Retina display is unlikely, because in marketing terms, Apple said it means it's pixels are indistinguishable by the human eye. That is even if you hold it to your face. (I can hold my iPhone 4 to my face and cannot differentiate any pixels)
Uh, no. Apple has said that "retina display" means that pixels are indistinguishable
from a nominal viewing distance. Even the iPhone's display pixels can be seen, by most people, if you get close enough. Here's a good reference chart:
Minimum Resolution for Smooth, Clean Images (dpi)
Vision
Distance..........20/20.............20/15
36"....................68.....................90
24"...................101...................135
18"...................135...................180
12"...................203...................270
8"....................304....................405
6"....................405....................540
So, you see, for people with 20/20 vision, the iPhone would not be considered a retina display if they were regularly holding it closer than 6" from their face. And, for the iPad, which is normally held between 12" and 18", a pixel resolution in the range of 150 to 200 ppi would be sufficient to consider it to be a retina display. (There is a great explanation of this
here).
Therefore...
I don't think we will see a better display, not until the 3rd gen. But if we do, my guess is it will either be around 1200x900 (154ppi) or if we're very lucky, 1600x1200 (206ppi).
I'd say you're arguing that the iPad will have a retina display, based on these resolutions.
Yep! That's why I just liquidated my 64GB WiFi yesterday on ebay. I bought it one month after the launch, knowing I was going to dump it as soon as the announced the addition of a front-facing camera. I'm expecting to see a flood of used and unopenned (gifted?) Stock to hit any second, and I didn't want the resale value to plummet. It didn't even last a full 24 hours, and fetched $660.
Bring it on!
And, of course, Apple might not be bringing it on for a few months yet, and now you'll have to go without having an iPad for that time...
For your sake, and all of ours, I hope it does come out soon!
