If they would have switched to USB-C i would need a lighting cable to charge my iPad, an USB-C cable to charge my iPhone and an magnetic charger to charge my Apple Watch. Great...

Now I only carry my iPad charger and my Apple Watch charger when i (used to be able to) travel.

With all due respect, if that’s the extent of your travel bag cable dilemma, consider yourself lucky!

The benefits of having USB-C on iPhones would be huge. Being able to plug in a display and get crisp 4K 60FPS + pair a Bluetooth keyboard + mouse or trackpad would make these really powerful phones with amazing CPUs so much more useful especially if they are still going to call them "Pro" models. I'd happily plug my phone into a USB-C display to sit down and do some work on it. Especially if you were travelling light.
Since iOS is crap at extended resolution support at this time, mirroring leaves huge side panels of “purest green” sorry black on any monitor attached cepting a few games and YouTube its not particularly friendly right now.

How would it work with new EU regulations that will require USB-C charging ports on phones? Will Apple stop selling their products in Europe?
They haven't even written a draft of that legislation yet, so who knows what it will look like.

But in-principle the goal of the legislation is to reduce waste by not including "unnecessary" chargers and cables in the box of every device shipped. Instead, the purchaser is expected to already own a compatible charger and cable.

I suspect Qi Charging and USB-C would both be perfectly acceptable charging methods under the legislation. They're both standards that are in wide use.

I can see them adding a USB-C port to the phone, but there will always be a connector jack in some way. The lightning port is used for dozens of things besides charging, so Apple will need an alternative to that if they remove it.

Add a dongle to adapt to USB C. It also seems the EU really hasn't established a standard, and by the time they have a formal requirement wirelss may make it overcome by events.

So basically because they have this vision, they can't go with a superior method because it would show their 'vision' is rubbish?

More that there is no point in doing so. If Apple knows they are not going to keep USB-C around on the iphone for the long term, then why bother to support it now?

In a way, it’s like how Apple feels confident enough to drop MagSafe with the 2016 MacBooks because they now sport longer battery life, and users no longer need to keep themselves tethered to a power socket 24/7.

The timing is interesting for me because I am currently thinking of holding on to my 8+ for another year and upgrading only in 2021 (partly because I expect the whole pandemic situation to last for a while and having to wear face masks makes the value proposition of a smartphone with Face ID less appealing).

I do understand on some level that Apple is not your typical tech company (heck, I have lost count of how many times I have called them a design company) and conventional logic only goes so far in explaining why they do the things they do.

However, somewhere along the line, I seem to be gradually losing my taste for being an early adopter for Apple’s grand vision. Don’t get me wrong. My Apple products still work great and I don’t see myself moving away from the Apple ecosystem anytime soon. I just prefer to sit out the messy transitional phase and step in to reap the benefits only after the chaos dies down.

Do I make sense?

We all have lightning connectors at home already and we may even share them with the rest of the family.
As a customer, it would be absolutely frustrating to switch to USB-C for just one generation.
The other end of the cable can be USB-C though.

There aren't actually any fewer wires though are there? There's still the wire from the power socket to the charger, but instead of going straight into your phone it goes into the charger which is in physical contact with your phone. Same amount of wiring, just an extra device.

Well, if AirPower ever becomes a thing...

I just don't understand how this transition would work, especially for early adopters.

****, my phone's dead can I borrow your... ah nevermind.

Oh you've got a Qi charger?! Great ::many hours pass as power slowly flows into the phone::

That wasn’t the question though, was it. Did you mean a portless smartphone, as is proposed in the article?

Port less? That forces people to buy all new cars that have wireless connectivity and wireless charging.

I wonder what their plans are for the vast majority of CarPlay-enabled vehicles that don’t support wireless CarPlay.

The only positive that I can see coming from this is that we finally get a first-party USB-to-wireless adapter for CarPlay vehicles.
This was the first thing I was wondering about when I read this article. Very few head units support wireless car play.

I think right now USB C would benefit the most people. Although, I think many non-tech People would explode with anger if Apple changed from Lightning to USB C. Most people care about all those chargers they bought, and even more about all of those accessories they bought. I felt shocked when Apple introduced Lightning and some of my acquaintances felt angry towards Apple from changing from that ridiculously large 30-pin adapter.

Personally, I believe Apple will introduce a three-fold strategy when they do. One, a new wireless proprietary technology that charges truly wirelessly up to a range. Two, Qi charging. Three, a magnetic smart connector in addition to the other two.

I remember Apple buying a startup many years ago with the technology to wirelessly charge devices on the same desktop. So maybe within a meter.

For me it’s all a joke anyways. Apple should get rid of that absurd notch before they even consider thinking they have the technology down to do a wireless charging system like we all want for the future. It definitely would ensure privacy by locking out so many law enforcement and hacker type individuals who need physical access to a device.

I care mostly about the user view/interface. To me the screen needs no notch before Apple tackles other problems. Apple’s marketing department should feel ashamed of themselves calling the iPhone a bezel-less or all-screen/all-display iPhone.

So I don’t much use the port on my iPhone, other than charging, but I still wouldn’t want a portless iPhone.

The only way I would accept it is if they stick a smart connector on the edge for fast charging and come out with some kind of magsafe for iPhone charging cable.

The problem is the charging cable solves a simple use case that happens all the time - your phone is dead, but you have to use it. Say you are on a long call and your phone dies...then what? Put them on speaker while your phone sits on the charging pad?

That plus development is going to be a nightmare unless xcode greatly improves wireless debugging in the next year.

It isn’t just cars and homes what about airports, planes, hotels, gyms etc. It has taken the world 10+ years to put in USB connectors how long to replace with some proprietary solution that is also secure.
need to know more but I’m not interested in a totally wireless solution
