Wouldn't this powerful of an adapter be able to power a MacBook Pro too? Maybe they are moving towards a universal power adapter? I'm not a power expert, but having one adapter to bring them, and charge them, would be nice.

It makes more sense to make the Mac charger support the iPhone rather than the iPhone charger strong enough to power Macs just in case you own both.

It already works with a bigger charger. I got the 29 W USB-C and have used it daily for two iPads, iPhone and Powerbeats. The iPad Pro would take ages to charge if I didn’t get this charger.

I've been doing it for years - it's the MBP USB-C brick - just need the USBC-Lightning cable. Incredibly useful when traveling - one brick and two cables to charge pretty much everything (iPad, iPhone, MBP, AirPods).

Unfortunately I still need a third cable if I also want to charge my Kindle or Bose headphones.

Great idea! I hadn't thought of that. Excellent!

Yes, Apple should include fast chargers with all iPhone 12 phones.

My 11 Pro Max came with a fast charger. Fast charging makes using an iPhone a better experience.

Really not fond of these new USB-c bricks. They're bulky, plasticky, cheap, and you cannot switch the front for international plug types or connect to a cord extender. Another peripheral that's been made a bit worse and a bit more disposable by the "environmentally conscious" Apple.

Unless this 20W charger is for something else... I still believe that it will be portless and wireless to avoid EU lawsuits over lightning. Is this a charger for a wireless pad???
I cannot imagine going full wireless. There are just too many scenarios where wireless would not work or be feasible. If everyone is supposed to carry a wireless charging pad with them, can you imagine the issues that would cause? How to charge your phone on a plane? In the car? Or any of a million inconvenient places?

The faster your phone charges, the more it degrades the battery. Seems most people are not aware of that.

Fast charging is only useful if you are the type of person who runs out of battery frequently and has only 20 minutes in an airport to to plug it in. For everyone else who charges only overnight, slower is better as it allows the battery to last longer.

I'd wager, USB-C.

EDIT: The standard USB-C MBP power brick can be used with everything, with the proper cable. I forgot that. And using this adapter to charge a MBP would be punishingly slow. My comment didn't take that into account. I mean, you *could*, but why in the heck would you want to take 5 to 6 times longer to charge.

I doubt it would be able to power a macbook pro. Maybe charge it really slowly if it's off. But The adaptors for the macbook Pro ranges from roughly 3x to 5x the power of the rumored 20watt. That said, maybe they will be able to with the new A series chips in laptops (Although I'm still skeptical), but certainly not with what we have today.

Ah yes the yearly, "I swear iPhone's will come with a USB C fast charger this year", post.

Eventually they will be right. Maybe this is the year!

Depends - fast chargers also degrade the battery faster. I only charge my phone overnight so I start the day with 100% regardless of whether I use a fast charger or a 5W slow charger. I'd argue that maintaining the battery life for longer improves my iPhone experience.

I've never understood why Apple provide small charger for big iPhone. This baffled me. I know it's all about margin / profit, etc.

I think Apple should provide the same watt as iPad for big iPhone. That's what I've been doing that ever since and it is noticeable different.
Actually, I think only the tech community cares about these issues. The average person puts their iPhone on the charger before bed. It doesn’t matter how slow it’s charging as long as it’s charged by morning. Furthermore, it’s far safer and healthier for the battery to charge it slower.

I believe we will see true wireless at some point in the near future. Apple was working with a company that could provide that. In addition, with the right antennae on the outside of future iPhones, could be charged from basically any direction as long as it has line of sight and within maybe one meter or approximately three feet. That is where we seem headed. That’s far better than Qi charging which isn’t really wireless and isn’t really better than charging via a cable. Apple has to have something in the pipeline for this.

Because these rediculous 40w+ chargers popular with android heavily degrade batteries and fast. Apple also uses much smaller batteries due to efficiency.

IIRC Oppo had a 75w charger or something like that and came out saying it would degrade the battery 30% within a year of use.

This right here is why my nightstand charger will likely remain being the 5Watt. That's where I charge my phone 90% of the time, and I want it to be gentle since it can take all night to do so anyhow. I'll leave the fast charging for when I am in a hurry and need power quickly.

If the 18/20w charger is included on all iPhone 12s, then where’s the pro features at? The models are getting blurred further with each new rumor.
OLED extra lens, stainless, higher water proofing. Fast charger was never much of a pro feature given that you can pick one up for 20 bucks

Mine is as well. I have an XR, so battery life is already pretty amazing, I have no need for a fast charger in my bedroom.

I do have a 30w in my home office though for my iPad. Use it on my phone now and again if I forgot to charge it for a day or two.

The average person occasionally has an emergency charge scenario, like they forgot to charge or they drained their battery playing a game. They get battery anxiety, plug it in, and 15 minutes later see they got a good amount of charge, and are pleasantly surprised. That's how you get brand loyalty.

Wireless in 2021

Meanwhile, phones from OPPO and Huawei already ship with 40W+ adapters...

And let’s hope people don’t use those everyday otherwise those batteries will suck very quickly

I would say that’s not the average person. The reason the Pro iPhones have 18w is simply a matter of more possibly a tech-savvy user. And Apple needs to play catch up with other companies.

The average iPhone user doesn’t run out of battery like a heavy user or tech-focused user. If the average user charges overnight, they’re fine until evening. Sure, there are some instances where it would be nice. For those people, they can use a rapid charger when needed. But the average user and even tech centric user should use a 5W Charger overnight to ensure the best battery life. The thing is the techies out there are far less likely to keep their phone long enough to need to replace the battery anyway.

I don’t think there’s any doubt the reason why Apple used 5W for so long was not to tick off people but to ensure the best battery condition possible for the longest time ~ two years until replacement used to be in cycles by carriers. I also believe the lengthening of cycles by carriers is what lulled Apple into just updating the iPhone design every three or more years.

I charge my 11 Pro Max anytime and I don't have a degrading battery issue.

I don't charge my phone overnight. I usually charge the phone in the evening when I am not using it. It takes ~ 0.5 to 1.5 hours to charge to 100%. Overnight I lose maybe 2 to 5 % battery. Then I charge it to 100% in the morning before I go out.

It is much better when the iPhone charges quickly whenever I charge it.

You can't switch the front pins like the old Mac chargers but they take the standard converter plugs for international travel which you generally need for all other electrical devices

How's your battery health though? My 11 is 8 months old and it's still 100%.

That is so true. If Apple make the all wireless charging leap first, we'll be the ones suffering in these sorts of scenarios for years whilst the public charging infrastructure catches up. Meanwhile, other people can plug their phones in happily as before.
