LOL! I'm a key chain minimalist, too. Even the stupid car button fobs are too big. I pick up my wife's chain and it looks like she's a janitor in some mental institution somewhere.

Im with you here. Things on your key chain put weight on your ignition and kill it. I have my key FOB and key and house key. Thats it. plus I fell down too many times on bulky keys and learned my lesson lol

They still make cars where you have to insert a key into something to start it?
That whole thing with key chains and weight is bs. Maybe ten lbs would, what kills ignitions is jamming the keys in, to hard and fast and at angles other than straight in. My friend is a Chevy tech, he would tear them apart to see why they failed. Damage and broken parts always were bent pins pointing to the interior of the key hole.

I’m sure that’s true. I’m also just amazed it’s something anyone would care about. Every car I’ve owned, rented, or ridden in for the last 5 years or so either had a fob you could keep in your pocket, or a fob that just rests in a socket and which doesn’t have electrical contacts. Nothing to ”break”

Now I just need stuff to be able to track. I recently went entirely keyless on my car, and I pretty much carry a single card with me when places don't take Apple Pay, and its not like I can put a tracker on the card. Arizona just got mobile IDs on iPhones, so I use that now too.

I guess I can put them on TV remotes somehow.

In this day and age where i use a debit card 99.9% of the time, i had to google what a 50 cent coin looked like. “ Oh yeah..” I thought to myself. I kinda forgot what those looked like.
Even all there was was paper money, a 50 cent coin was not something you saw very often. Same with those quarter sized dollar coins.
I was thinking "What country is there a 50 cent coin" when I read the article, LOL! I was like, when did we get that?

My keychain is my iPhone... so there goes my use for this...

lol... 40 bucks for a single tag... Profit 39.
If you have a few of those it's probably cheaper to actually lose stuff once in a while than investing in the tags...
As for placing things and forgetting where they are: Such tags shouldn't be the goto solution when you misplace stuff and don't find it anymore. If you have a habit of forgetting where you left your things, get a dedicated place for your stuff and train yourself to not temporarily place things somewhere else, especially not hidden. If you have to place something temporarily always put it somewhere easily visible, i.e. preferably on top of a table that's frequently visited (instead of e.g. the couch).
For the guys: Always use the same pocket for the same items => check the pockets when you leave. Also just train yourself to check them randomly when you are not at home. It becomes a habit in a short time and patting the pockets before leaving becomes almost automatic.

And yet... Tile and TrackR exist... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

:p

Uh, just go to a hotel and get a replacement key. Most are RFID now and make excellent NFC tags. I have like 15 of them all over the house and all serve a different purpose when tapped.

Neat. Free.

edit: lol never mind, I didn't realize this was a Tile type of thing. Well, my post stands if all you need is an nfc tag.

If they work, they’re worth $39. Chipolo, Tile etc are so unreliable, that you only discover once you’ve lost your keys that the tracker has been disconnected for the past two weeks. They have one purpose. If they can do it flawlessly, every time without fail, they’re worth $39.

If the price is accurate that's mildly surprising, would make them only a shade more expensive than the Pro-level Tile, which is presumably where these would be competing rather than with the entry-level. Though I suppose there's a limit on how high they can price these and still have them hold any appeal; if you're paying $50+ for a thing that helps you find something, the value of that thing has to be pretty high to begin with ...
I am also disappointed by the size. This is way too large for placement on many of the objects one would most want to tack.

Have you ever tried to use “Find My” to search for a misplaced AirPods? Almost entirely useless feature in that case, so I’m not optimistic about Apple‘s capabilities in this area.

The regular AirPods don’t have UWB though, so it’s not a fair comparison.

Do the AirPods Pro have UWB? Because Find My isn't any better with them.

It only works while the AirPods...

  • are outside of their case
  • have sufficient remaining battery power (irrespective of the battery level of their case)
  • are witihin range of a paired iPhone
  • while the iPhone has internet access
  • while the iPhone has GPS access
So, practically speaking, Find My... can help you find AirPods hidden between your sofa cushions provided they're not inside their charging case and haven't yet run out of power, assuming they're within range of your iPhone and your iPhone has internet access at the moment. That's about it.

fair enough. Only got my AirPods a couple of days ago and haven’t lost them yet ...

Wait. If AirPods are in their case and you cannot find the whole thing, you're screwed and can't use FindMy?

The AirPods have none of the circuitry that is required to really do find my. All find my knows is the last place they connected to your own phone.

Don't get me wrong. I love my AirPods. But "Find My" falls far short of expectations.

$40 bucks for something designed to get lost! lol

The internet says the US Half Dollar is 30.61 mm in diameter.
Yes - here's a CDN "Twooney" approx same size (28.0 mm) as US 50 cent piece - a US 25 cent piece in photo two and a handy metric measure

So, how are Samsung's SmartTags selling? Or tile? Because this was interesting when Tile came out years ago and after that I have never seen or heard anything about these devices anymore. At Apple's price-point I'll probably not buy them even if I had a use-case, especially given the limited range of these things.
