As an avid amateur photographer, I own more than a dozen cameras, and bought three in the past three years, I have watched with interest as iPhone camera's kept getting better. Maybe not 64 megapixels, but let's note two things.
1. When market research was first performed regarding the iPhone those interviewed said they would want a separate camera and phone. Of course, they had no idea how good the cameras in the iPhone would become.
2. Every few years Apple upends an industry. When they came out with the iPhone everyone said Steve Jobs was nuts. That Apple could never compete with the giant cell phone companies like Motorola and Palm and Ericsson. Where are those companies now? It is only logical that Apple has been working behind the scenes to improve their cameras until one day they truly can compete with an SLR. And for those who think the technology can't do it in something as small as a phone, really? The original iPhone was a more powerful computer than what NASA used to land men on the moon. So, I'm not sure what the Iphone 13, or 14 or 15 cameras will look like- but I expect huge improvements are coming.

The next-generation iPhone 12 lineup coming in fall 2020 isn't out yet, but Fudge (@choco_bit), a leaker who sometimes shares information on upcoming Apple devices, today offered up details on what Apple has in store for the 2021 iPhone 13's camera setup.

allegediphone13camera.jpg

A simple design drawing depicts a device with a four camera array, which Fudge claims will have the following features:
  • 64-megapixel wide-angle lens with 1x optical zoom and 6x digital zoom
  • 40-megapixel telephoto lens with 3x-5x optical zoom and 15-20x digital zoom
  • 64-megapixel anamorphic lens for video capture (2.1:1)
  • 40-megapixel .25x min ultra wide-angle lens with optical reverse zoom
  • LiDAR 4.0
The leaker says that the information should be taken with a "Huuuuugggeeeee amount of 🧂," suggesting the source of the rumor is questionable or it's so early that the camera setup could change. Apple makes plans for iPhones well ahead of when a new device is released, but plans change and are tweaked and there's quite a ways to go before the iPhone 13's final design needs to be nailed down.

The rumored iPhone 13 camera is wildly different from what's in the iPhone 11, and while Apple does make major camera improvements each year, the company has thus far shied away from super high megapixel cameras in its iPhones.

The iPhone 11 Pro features a 12-megapixel wide-angle camera, a 12-megapixel ultra wide-angle camera, and a 12-megapixel telephoto camera.

There have been some rumors indicating the iPhone 12 models coming in 2020 could get a 64-megapixel wide-angle camera along with a telephoto lens that supports 3x optical zoom (up from 2x), but we've heard surprisingly little about the camera technology.

Most rumors have focused on the inclusion of 3D camera technology in the iPhone 12, which is expected to be similar to the LiDAR Scanner feature that Apple introduced in 2020 iPad Pro models.

In 2020, higher-end iPhone 12 models are expected to continue to feature triple-lens camera setups, while the lower-end iPhone 12 models will continue to offer dual-lens camera setups. The 2021 iPhones will probably be similar, with the best camera technology reserved for the more expensive devices.

I wonder what cameras the iPhone 12S will have? Very slow apple news day

Why even post a "rumor" from a source that has zero credibility? Might as well ask that guy sleeping on a park bench.
Macrumors Spends more time monitoring the forums than they do with their articles.
Guarantee I get email about this, it’s crazy I think they forget they are a Apple rumor blog and think they are important.

They've been at 12MP for years. This is a huge jump if true.
Trading megapixels for better low light performance is worth it, particularly for shooting 4K@60Hz video.

If you're taking handheld still photos you probably don't want a slower shutter speed either.

I wonder if 64 MP means that they're counting individual sub-pixels so that it is effectively something like 24 MP.
Or if they're summing up all the lenses (16 x 4).

It is much more believable that each camera is 16 megapixels and it will have better integration than the current 11 Pro, and maybe it can stitch together a 64 MP photo. That would be interesting if they can map an image well.

Still I look forward to the next camera tech.

I dunno how I would feel about 64MP

Could turn out like the Galaxy s20 ultra

lots of good videos explaining how too high MP counts mess up autofocus, night mode and more

Article says 2021, so I agree with 12S.
Unless they do remove the charging port next year, then they'd call it 13 because it doesn't look identical to the previous year.

Is there any demand at all for 2.1:1 video on phones? I mean beyond those that buy specialized lenses? There would be black bars during playback. I suppose you could crop to 16:9 but for what? Lens flare?
