As a travel writer/blogger who uses the iphone as my main travel camera, news of camera upgrades on the iphone always interest me. I was just excited about the ultra wide angle camera getting night mode in the next iphone plus the addition of the LiDar camera for more accurate shallow depth of field and background blurring effects in portrait mode. So this leak of even bigger camera updates coming in the iphone 13 is exciting. However, that seems like a big leap for apple to go from 12 megapixels sensors to over 40. So i’d take this rumor with a HUGE grain of salt.

What would be the point of making the video capture lens 64 MP?

Shouldn't it be at most 35 or so (if it will be 8K capable) since the individual pixels being larger on the same sensor area would actually server better for low light and noise?

I'd rather have it 12 MP and 4K120p capable instead of 8K though 😔

As an avid amateur photographer, I own more than a dozen cameras, and bought three in the past three years, I have watched with interest as iPhone camera's kept getting better. Maybe not 64 megapixels, but let's note two things.
1. When market research was first performed regarding the iPhone those interviewed said they would want a separate camera and phone. Of course, they had no idea how good the cameras in the iPhone would become.
2. Every few years Apple upends an industry. When they came out with the iPhone everyone said Steve Jobs was nuts. That Apple could never compete with the giant cell phone companies like Motorola and Palm and Ericsson. Where are those companies now? It is only logical that Apple has been working behind the scenes to improve their cameras until one day they truly can compete with an SLR. And for those who think the technology can't do it in something as small as a phone, really? The original iPhone was a more powerful computer than what NASA used to land men on the moon. So, I'm not sure what the Iphone 13, or 14 or 15 cameras will look like- but I expect huge improvements are coming.

1) Please link to that market research article, you got me interested. To the point, the iPhone cameras were terrible for photos until at least the iPhone 4 and improved from there.
2) As the tech of smartphones comes to a plateau the camera and display are some of the few differences these devices can have amongst their competition. The camera companies are both much smaller and much less experienced in the computational fields to push their existing DSLRs much - which are a leftover design from the film days anyway. Cameras in smartphones have been sufficient for most users for many years already and the old camera companies feel this every year. The point and shot dedicated camera market is dead already and newer mirror less design cost more every year.

Is anyone else wondering why the camera isn't square when photos and videos have flat sides? Someone explain this mystery to me!

It’s much easier to craft lenses that are round. The construction process I believe includes lots of tooling and polishing which is likely much easier to achieve consistency with in a round form.

Serious question here, why not just have one HUGE lens, instead of 2, 3 or 4? It really looks daft, just like the notch.

How long would you like the ugly camera bump to be? I rather have the back of the devices flush - without having to purchase a case to achieve that.

We are going back to 2012.. soon we will have built in point and shoot cameras with a zoom built into the back of the phone! EXCITING TIMES!!

In 2020, higher-end iPhone 12 models are expected to continue to feature triple-lens camera setups, while the lower-end iPhone 12 models will continue to offer dual-lens camera setups
I’m a little confused by this line - you say “triple-lens camera”, implying it’s not triple camera. Is it one sensor with multiple lenses?

Me too, I’d rather they just made the whole phone thicker to accommodate the cameras. They can will it with battery. And then make it smaller in other dimensions!

Thinner, as a design objective at Apple, seems to have been replaced by camera count.
iPhone 6 was the thinnest. Thinner has been out since 2014. That’s 6 years ago.

Customers want better cameras. It’s not as if Apple has gone rogue and is offering better cameras than people want.

While skeptical about this, the potential addition of an anamorphic lens would make it an insta-buy for me (right now using the XS Max). I’ve had so much fun with Moment’s anamorphic lens, so having it integrated in the phone would be amazing. It is surprisingly awesome for photos too, not only for videos.

Lots of disagreement on this rumor. Prossier says the iphone 13 camera layout will be the same and refers to the iPhone 13 as "12S".
