I've had both. I loved the leather, but I wouldn't buy the silicone again. For me, the silicone was a dust and lint magnet.
For which generation of iPhone did you use the silicone for?

I ask because I'm not sure it's fair to presume latter generations of the silicone (or leather) case carry the same negatives as the prior ones.

I've had the apple silicon case, ip6s. Unfortunately it wears around the edges if it's usually kept in your pants pocket.
The apple leather case wears quite well imo.

I used the silicone case on my 7 Plus.

Leather all the way. I tried a silicone one for my 6s+ and it was IMO too grippy. Great for holdability but made it a bit tricky to put in my pocket.

More grip is the reason I went with the silicon case for my Plus after I had the leather case with the regular 6s. It can be tricky in and out of pockets but probably saved me a couple drops.

I'm going back to the leather case with the iPhone X. Hopefully my time with the Plus taught me to be more careful.

If you want a lighter color, go with silicone. It will look nicer and hold the color.
For darker colors, I would give the edge to leather.

So after a lot of thought I decided I'm skipping the silicone and going with a leather case this year. I was between the product red or charcoal gray but, after seeing how the red leather wears after a while, I decided on the charcoal gray for my SG 8+. I'll take some pics once I get it this week

I've had the Product RED silicone case on my 6S+, and have had to replace it a couple of times because the corners and spots just flake off from regular use. I don't throw it around, and I don't remove the case, so I would consider it from regular use.

I'm thinking of doing the Product RED leather case for my X - does anyone have experience with that color in the leather case and how that wears over time? I'm concerned about some of the comments about the colors getting gross over time.

I haven't seen the current red leather color for this year since its only been out for about a month but I have seen previous years product reds aged 3 months to 2 years and they patina in a very dirty unattractive way for my taste. I've had black in the past so I'm opting for the charcoal gray leather for my SG 8+ this year.

Thanks, I saw that too, keep hoping they'll make a better quality one...

THE MACHINED BUTTONS are pretty sweet I think and as long as you pick the right color to take into account wear you should be alright. Tho that rules out a lot of colors

I have a feeling this saddle brown is gonna be nice when it's even worn in. Even uneven the beat up look a few weeks in is kinda cool

Picking the right color is the key :) I'm thinking I may get a Product RED Silicone one and an Aubergine leather one...

I agree the saddle brown creates the most traditional leather patina.

For my new iPhone 8 i picked up the black silicone case as my first impression of it has been very positive and, well, it's also cheaper. I still like the general feel of it and the nice grip, but... unfortunately the case is indeed a terrible lint magnet and just after 3 weeks of regular use i already see signs of wear around the corners as parts are slightly peeling off.

the case looks absolutely great as long as it's clean, but it's just crazy how fast and easily it attracts lint. i guess if one chooses one of the "lighter" colors this wouldn't be that much of a problem.

now i'm seriously considering picking up the black leather case instead.

Not great reading how the Silicone wears so quick. My current third party case has lasted 2 years without any deep chips/scratches. If the same manufacturer made a similar case for the X, i'd get it, but they decided to go more 'floral/glittery' with their range of cases....ugh.

I have the purple silicone and just picked up the aubergine leather. Both awesome cases! I really like the intergraded buttons on the leather. My silicone is definitely more grippy and fun looking. Leather is more classic and subdued. You really can't go wrong with either!

The silicone is MUCH nicer than the leather.

The silicone has an amazing feel to it and if you've never touched one, you'll be like 'wow'.

The silicone also is lined entirely on the inside, the leather is not lined on the sides which is lame. The leather also gets nasty looking IMO. "Patina" it is not. It's just nasty dirt and grime where you hold it which is disgusting to me personally.

As for the corners peeling, neither me nor my wife have ever experienced this. What are you guys doing, using fingernails at the corners to pry these cases off? You don't need to touch the corners at all to remove the case, you can just use the broad side of your thumb along the side near the lower corner of the screen and it slides off nice and easy without any corner damage.

Had both over the years and silicone >>>> leather

I agree with this comment.

The Apple’s Silicone case is the best case in the world.

Can you share pics of the Aubergine leather? I'm really debating about that one...

Sure, the online photos don’t do it justice.

It’s not an easy colour to photograph which doesn’t help much either.

That's a really nice color! I really want the charcoal gray leather case but I haven't seen anyone post pics yet. Nice Spyderco by the way!

Just a cautionary word of advice. Test out the buttons on the leather case before leaving the Apple store. I did this and found my buttons had a defect and wouldn’t work. Switched and the next one was perfect.

The dude said it’s not an uncommon occurrence.
