@TumbleDryer forgive me for not having read the entire thread, but i did read your OP;

Maybe you had your reasons for opting for the 4a instead of the 3; and if you find it good enough for your needs, all the merrier, you saved yourself some money.

If you're not software averse, you now have the wonderful, blissful, amazing, nirvanaesque opportunity..
..ta daa.. !!
To use a custom ROM on your phone.

And do whatEVER you want.
Let me repeat that kindly;
And do whatEVER you want. Yessir, you can.
No more developer/company "vision" dictating how you do things. No sir, not for you.

(if this sounds enticing, check LineageOS. Even more optional, but without getting into it here [i fear this forum will have rules regarding that, they sure are overzealous in so many other things], there are ways to use Google apps, legitimately, without having Google Store + Google Play spying running 24/7 on your phone. Either way, you don't know what Android can do until you've really used Android, ie de-Googled your phone)
((also, on Android? The things you can do with Firefox? Boy are you in for a treat! And you'll also understand why i don't, ever, use Safari))

Judging by a few of your posts -i've come across them before-, you sound like my kinda guy, so i could perhaps tell you that:
- and you already know this, the only thing you could possibly truly miss is the ability to pick up that cell phone without getting up from the desk, without even touching it. It being the only reason i have an iPhone, as i already had the Mac. That's not coming back sadly.
+ if you spend some time to get the OS as you want it (LineageOS), you will not believe you wasted all this time using an Apple product. But.. if you're not in the software game, that will take some time off of you.

Have a good one and go nuts with it!
Change should always feel liberating, especially when "shedding" is involved 🙂

He's not wrong though! Not sure why your so upset at his statement. IMessage is the primary messaging service for ios users in the US only!

Sure there will be the odd few in the UK who use it but not many at all.
Not upset, just trying to find some proof of all the non users.

I abhor the current iOS keyboard with a passion. I cannot fathom any reason as to why it has been tweaked, let alone worse. 3D Touch would be more welcome than ever now, even moving the text cursor is awful now.
There are still numerous, frequent software grievances that are pushing me to the edge, of duo-carry android/iPhone. I’ve actually been eyeballing Nothing in particular, even before the 4a announcement. I’d be interested in a follow-up after a couple months if you stick with it.

Again, I will just mention that third party services using Apple devices also 'just work'. Being in the Apple ecosystem or the Android ecosystem does not have to mean you are bound to the services of either one.
I will say some third party services and devices do work better on android, for example notifications on Garmin watches.

Since September 15 2025 you’ve done nothing but complain about Apple 443 times

Before that you posted 4 times.

How is it over there at Samsung?

That’s nice.

My flight is leaving from gate 68 shortly as well. Just felt like you’d be interested

OK.
Not need to announce your leaving.
Enjoy!
May want to visit and tell us how the Android smartphones are doing, esp. how iPhone users can transition out of iOS... what software to use and the steps to transitioning.
The newer Pixel phones have supposedly improved but is it enough to lure iPhone users away?
That's the real question.
Note - September 15 2025 was when LiquidGlass was released.

A little history... I was infact a MacRumors paid member over 25 years ago and only left when iPhone brought about an influx of non Mac users keen to shoot anyone down that didn't align with their views. The forum became less friendly and it was a battle to get information from the threads created. Much like this thread where many people only read the opening paragraph, miss the entire point of the thread (which I've made bold by the way) and attempt quick snipe remarks about something they've not read. I find that quite sad but it happens quite often these days. It's the exact reason why I don't use social media, it's full of uneducated people just wanting to put people down. The pointless comments about not having to announce my departure for example do not answer my question nor help the thread or quality of MacRumors. A lot of the 443 'complaints' were actually me reiterating the point of my original posts that people failed to read properly but they felt compelled to reply anyway.

Back when MacRumors and Apple were small MacRumors felt like a community. People fell over themselves to try and help and inform each other. I made friends here, we would laugh, joke and play games in the private forum. There were users like Mad Jew, BlueVelvet, MacBoobsPro, Chundles, Queso, and many others. I had people post me gifts when I mentioned I liked something. I was a popular user because I helped people whenever I could. I was determined to out reply Mad Jew with helpful responses but that guy was... well... mad. Must have been a bot. 🤔

I left MacRumors because it was no longer a place I enjoyed. When I came back recently it was in-part to see what peoples thoughts were on Apples current direction. I was genuinely surprised to find many people had shifted position and what was almost unthinkable 10 years ago I find many people agreeing with me that Apple's magic is waning and people are openly posting their negative experiences. All I've done is rejoin and post mine with the hope Apple takes note.

So let's all just cut the unnecessary sniping and be helpful and respectful. There's so much s**t going on in the world right now to be posting useless jibes and injecting more negativity into the world. If you don't have any experience of switching to Android like my post enquires don't post anything.

I'm grateful to the ones that have read the entire post and offered useful information.

You said "barely anyone uses iMessage in the uk" 🤷🏻‍♂️

Anyway, this is like head butting a brick wall, good night.
You can’t fathom that not everyone with an iPhone uses iMessage and that WhatsApp is the defacto messaging system in the UK.
I find it funny that most of the Google apps I used on my iPhone work better than the ones on my Google Pixel.
Same. Audio switching from phone loudspeaker to earbuds is more reliable on my pixel buds from my pixel than my AirPods Pro 3 in my experience

I chose the 4a as it has everything I need. No need to spend more on stuff I don't need or want. I also chose Nothing phone for the OS for the same reason. It doesn't come bundled with bloatware and is based around clarity and efficiency.

The last thing I want to do (at the moment) is to start tinkering with things, I just want a no fuss out of the box efficient experience and Nothing Phone seems to fit the bill. Definitely appreciate your thoughts though.

the only problem I have had with equipment is quality control generally involving battery/recharging. in one phrase battery life. I admit to having a strong aversion to google, that aside if the product works for you, good, if not ok

In the last 10 years there's a lot more people complaining about everything.

Hey, I'm right there with you. I switched to Android before and I am seriously considering switching again. I don't agree with the culture of elitism around products and corporations. I am not explicitly loyal to Apple.

So, question for those adverse to Google. Is the assumption that by using an Android device you are forced to use Google services? And because of being adverse to Google (and its services) then, you'd never get an Android device?

I'm asking because a lot of people seem to also assume that by using iOS you are forced to use Apple services.

But in both cases that isn't true.

I do use Google's services on my iPhone, but that is by choice. There are other services out there that provide the same exact thing. For instance, I've had my Yahoo email account since 1999. I could very easily dump all my contacts, calendars and notes directly in to Yahoo. Yahoo's services would work exactly the same on my iPhone as they do on my Pixel or my Macs/PCs.

Some also don't like Yahoo. That's fine, its just an example. I'm sure that if I spent some time digging around I could come up with multiple services that are cross platform that will work on both Android and iOS.

Dropbox handles photos on all my devices, so that's another cross platform third party service.

In short, being either on Android or iOS does not automatically mean you are bound to the services of the manufacturer. The day that Apple says I can no longer use any service on my iDevices/Macs that is NOT Apple branded is the day I find something different. Likewise, if Google says that I can only use its services on Google-branded devices, I also walk.

in one phrase battery life

These days, that's 101% software.

If your Google Phone (the brand name is sadly of zero import by now, just a UI skin on the top) does not allow for better because such was the agreement between manufacturer and Google, alternative battery regulating software does exist.
The usual catch that it may or may not require some extra work from your end.

I know WhatsApp is used more, what I can’t fathom is your barely anyone uses iMessage view.

If there was proof I’d hold my hands up and say fair enough.
