I have never had a FB (Meta?) account, but I used to frequent Twitter (passively for the most part) in the days when it functioned as a sort of town square.
While I haven't actually closed my account, I have neither visited nor posted (tweeted) there in a number of years.
A question I might pose because your wording resonates with me, when would you say Twitter moved away from being the 'town square'? I too have abandoned the platform, though I removed my account. It seemed to me like the shift was already beginning to happen a few years before the new ownership took over. 2019-2021 or thereabouts. Of course looking back now that version of the platform looks like the Zen gardens compared to the mess it is now, I can't believe the stuff I see shared from there.
Circling back to the original MR topic I also find the massive amounts of deal posts annoying, but I can understand why they're viable to post. It would be great if we got a toggle like we have/had for the PRSI stuff (good times), that would of course solve the problem for those who don't like the posts. Overall though I find the quality of the articles, especially those around new product releases and events, to be of a high enough quality that it is still worth visiting and I prefer it over any other Apple news site. Though I will say the forum outside of the news section is the real highlight of MR.
