What also would be good: if Amar'e were to defend and rebound.

lost in all the lebron hype was the fact that paul pierce agreed to a 4 year ~60 million dollar deal with the celtics which will most likely keep him in boston til he retires.

there's an example of a true team player. he took a pay cut (he was due to make 21.5 million next season before opting out and could have gotten up to 4yr/90mil on the open market) to give the celtics more flexibility under the salary cap. looks like this deal will allow him to retire as a celtic, and he's going to go down as the #5 celtic of all time. can't wait to see #34 hanging in the rafters of the garden in 10 years.

i know everyone hates paul pierce, but all i have to say is i don't see lebron signing a below market deal to stay in cleveland...

Knicks officially have closed the deal for Amar'e and a intresting lil note James came to his Training camp today with a NY Cap on hope thats a hint :Dhttp://lebron-james-watch.si.com/#?eref=sihp

I agree that Pierce is a team player, but let's not get carried away. One of the reasons he opted out was so he could get a new contract in before the new collective bargaining agreement goes into effect next year. Same reason why Dirk opted out of his current contract and re-upped with Dallas.

You know, I was going to argue that Pierce is a bit old and a bit past his prime to be offered a 4yr/90mil contract....but you never know in the nba. Owners are always give out ridiculous contracts.

Goodbye David Lee. You've been a great Knick and you'll be missed. Hopefully you get a max contract somewhere -- you deserve it.

Ha! I knew people would read too much into the NY Yankees cap.

Smart business for both sides.

The maximum he would have been eligible for would have been 4yr/93mil, and I totally agree that he isn't worth that much. But when you look at a guy like Rudy Gay getting 5yr/80mil, I don't think it would have been that far fetched.

I'm really glad he's back in Boston to stay now, and we have a little bit more room under the cap to hopefully bring in one or two more guys and make one more run at a championship before KG and Ray are sent to the nursing home.

He deserves a max contract? How do you figure?

OK, I was a bit emotional yesterday. Not a max contract, but a long-term deal at greater than $10mil per. He's obviously not the best defender (certainly not at center), but he's a helluva offensive player who always works hard to improve his game. Great finisher, passer, rebounder and shooter. He needs to be on a team with a good defensive-minded center who clogs the middle and lets him play at power forward.

I don't think David Lee is worth even that much. Although he is very good and a lot of teams would like to have him, his numbers are suspect because for the last couple seasons he's been by far the best player on a mediocre team. If he can score that kind of contract, good for him. But if I were running a team, I wouldn't give him one.

Are you Donald Sterling? How safe and stingy can you be? Good luck getting players to sign with your team.

Don't be so dramatic. I don't think it's stingy to not want to spend $10 million per on a player whose only claim to fame so far is that he's the best player on the Knicks. It doesn't mean he won't get it or that he won't be successful wherever he goes. I wouldn't spend $20 million on Darko or $80 mil on Rudy Gay either, but it looks like both of those will happen. Based on those contracts, maybe he is worth $10 mil. I'm just saying I don't think he's worth that.

However, I think it would be smarter for the Knicks to overpay to keep Lee at $10 million than to spend twice as much on Stoudemire. Then they'd have at least some continuity on a team that will have a lot of turnover, would be keeping a popular player, and would have more money to spend to fill out their roster. Is anyone else skeptical that Amar'e will be able to score as efficiently without Nash dishing it to him? Between that and his injury history, Knick fans should be concerned about him.

Bottom-line: if you want a David Lee on your team, you're gonna have to pay $10+ million per. This is what he's worth on the market. You don't pay it, someone else will.

Or, you can stay away from these expensive guys and hand out $6+ million per on a Drew Gooden, which is what the Bucks did.

How is David Lee not worth $10 million??

Signing Amare Stoudamire isn't even an upgrade to David Lee. Sorry, but David Lee is worth around $15 million, and Stoudamire is worth.... maybe $15 million (?), which is what he would have made with the Suns if he didn't opt out of his contract.

Looks like Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh are off the table. Both are going to Miami.

LeBron is holding everyone else hostage until Thursday, 9pm.

Could be worse. He could be waiting to decide weeks into free agency instead of hours!

I think the most impressive thing LeBron has done in this whole thing is keep his plans close to the vest. There has been no sign from him where he will go. He even flattered the Clippers to make a pitch to him.

My gut feeling is that he will now go back to Cleveland. That's not the wiser move, in my opinion. I think Chicago has a better core and the ability to add a few small pieces to become a contender. If he stays in Cleveland, it's unclear what the team does to improve over the next couple years. I suppose eventually they will assemble the right combination of players for him to lead to the title, but who knows?

One thing for sure: once LeBron decides, it will set off a wave of crazy contracts for the second- and third-tier free agents. Right now there is way too much cap space chasing the players that available. What might teams offer players like Boozer, Allen, or Shaq?

I've gone from really liking Lebron when he was an up and comer, to not liking him at all now. All this hoopla is really dickish, IMO.
