Hmmm. Using my 8.4" touch screen that has internet access that came from the factory in my car isn't "illegal". Catch-22?

Just because the manufacturer includes it as OEM equipment doesn't make it legal. Around where I live dealers put illegal tints on new cars all the time. In fact, a friend of mine bought one such car and was shocked when he got pulled over for illegal tint, thinking the dealer shouldn't have sold him the car if it was in fact illegal.

Thus far, Officer Jessie Myers of the Gwinnett County Police hasn't lost. Now, it could happen but the way the law is written, he is correct that it is illegal. I wrote the Police Chief, Butch Ayers about it. His response was to refer me to the OCGA.

Someone who works for me, had her iPhone 5s in a bracket on her windshield. She always uses SIRI to program it. She never touched the iPhone. Officer Jessie Myers of the Gwinnett County Police Department rode up behind her convertible and then was beside her at a traffic light. He pulled her over and wrote her a citation for it. The way the law is written, using your phone for anything other than a call is illegal in Georgia. This officer has written more tickets than any other department in the state for it. His tickets thus far stand. Most pay them but those few that take them to court, lose. He hasn't lost one yet.

I'm sure it costs less to just pay the ticket than to get a decent lawyer and really challenge this law, but I hope someone does. If it is really true that simply putting in the address before you start the car and not interacting with it again until you get to your destination is illegal.

Remember the old days of fiddling with maps? Talk about hazardous.

Once the citation is issued one would have to pay to prove their case...it could be dropped after you pay for attorney and you still pay the fine +. So it won't stop the issue or abuse of power.

Georgia's law was written in such a way that any device that can access the internet is illegal to use when driving.

Once again the incompetence of the government is staggering. Many cars these days connect to the internet, so I suppose it is now illegal to drive any of them in Georgia. A couple of the automakers are actually advertising that their cars are rolling hotspots, and many now come with Apple CarPlay.

Agreed. My current car came with a wifi search feature...It doesn't allow access with the car in drive. We are in uncharted territory with new technology use and law.

Is it legal to use the apple watch in any state in the USA while driving?

Here in Washington state it is only legal to use mobile technology if you can use it hands free. I can legally use an Apple Watch while driving for things like the following:
  • Hey Siri - remind me to...
  • Hey Siri - call my wife
  • Hey Siri - take me home/to business name (and Siri will give me directions using haptic)
  • I can also set up driving directions while stopped and then use haptic directions while driving
What I can't do is read text messages or stare at a tiny map on my watch, iphone, or any other device while driving. In Washington this is a primary offense you can get pulled over and fined for doing. I wish they actually enforced it more though. I see people texting on their smartphones while driving all the time. I bike and walk much more than I drive, so as a matter of survival I pay attention to what the drivers around me are focused on. For example I look for eye contact from the driver before crossing in front of a car. I want to know that they see me. Quite often I notice they have a smartphone in one hand and the steering wheel in the other.

Yet putting on makeup is still legal.

I to use Siri if I need to hear a text or send one. Its easy and safe! The trick is to making it a habit to use and avoiding the temptation to look on phone. With that said ...If law enforcement is genuine about trying to save life's through text awareness ...then maybe part of the revenues generated could be used for advertisement! Writing excessive texts by one officers it not going to change the world.

WOW...guess now we need to study the law...make sure our new car is 100% legal!
