So I bought some liquid made for thermal paste removal
You just need alcohol and cotton swabs. Just be sure that there's no cotton fibers left on the die.

I have a number of camera sensor swabs that don't leave any fibers and I've used them in the past

I had to go out and purchase thermal paste, and then salesman asked me if I wanted a liquid for cleaning thermal paste residue. So I bought some liquid made for thermal paste removal. Can't remember the name, I bought it locally in Croatia. It helped a lot.

You can find a bunch on amazon. But if salesman hadn't recommended that, I would use alcohol instead.
hey all. during last night i notice the fans did not turn on and even this morning! its been very quiet with temps only at 50's with like 20 chrome tabs open and even doing a zoom voice conference call just now.

weird!?

I know that during the day yesterday my laptop was syncing a lot of stuff from dropbox. could that be the case here? maybe i could get down to 40's if i repaste!

Question for those that have the ThinkPad X1. I'm trying to get into the Bios by clicking the F-12 key at boot up and it does not work. Tried the F-1 key as well, but that to does not workie. Any suggestions ? I will be adding an SSD card in soon and doing a clean install of windows, no cloning.

Any improvement on fan noise after BIOS 1.19 update?
Looking over Lenovo's support site, there seems to be a general consensus that Lenovo altered the fan heuristics. I'm not saying that's good or bad, but it appears that the fans spin up only when the temps are hotter then when they were before and/or they lowered the first level of fan speed from 2600 to 2,000.

With that said, I've seen some complaints that the thinkpads are running a bit hotter (obviously). I guess you can't please everyone, slowing the fans will increase heat but reduce noise. Apple's take is they want a very quiet laptop, but that cause throttling. I don't mind when the fans spin up, even when watching 4k videos, the sound isn't obnoxious.

I have yet to update to 1.19, and I'm reasonably satisfied with the newer updated TPFanControl. I go by the old addage, if ain't broke why fix it, but there may be other bug fixes in 1.19 that I should consider.

In other news, I'm seriously debating uninstalling bitdefender. Of course the 30 day trial installed the entire suite and while it will only cost my 45 dollars this year, I'll be on the hook for 100 dollars next year. I don't think I'm willing to pay 100 dollars a year. If I just opt for the antivirus, I'm not sure its all that much better then Windows Defender.

Odd, do you see the red lenovo splash screen? When I see that, it tells me to hit the enter key. Do you press or hold the key?

Press the F1 key (continuously or repeatedly) at the moment the Lenovo logo appears. That should work.

Yes, the red Lenovo splash screen is shown, but it will only show me the "click the Enter Key" once in a while and that works just fine, but, not everytime does it appear.

F-1 key worked once or twice that I recall, but not know. Same with the F-12 key. Perplexing to say the lease.

Are you clicking or pressing? Did you just try holding the key down even if no text is being shown?

I do that with the enter key and it works for me. I old the enter key for like 30 seconds or something and then start clicking it multiple times. I think I incur a keyboard error but it shows a prompt to enter the bios

I've done it every which way, hold, tap, etc. At the point I will call support. All I want to know if I install the SSD and boot up and its not in the right order, will it allow me to go into the Bios than ? That way I can set the boot order.

Let is know how it goes with support.

On my end, I opted to uninstall bitdefender. I just don't think its worth the money or the overhead on the system. I just have to be mindful of when my kids use this laptop but they've largely use my older other computers and its unusual for them to use this so I think the risk factor is not as high as I initially thought. Plus they just watch youtube videos or go their home website.

Found the issue on my own. I turned off Fast Boot in power setting and all is well for now.

I to uninstalled Bitdefender but for the hit on performance I noticed. I paid for 1 year but got 2 years instead because I wanted to return it and they offered it to me. May install again someday.

FWIW and given I travel a lot for work purpose across Asia-Pacific; I've had zero hits with just Windows Defender & VoodooShield. I back both up with irregular manual scans by Kaspersky & Emsisoft on demand scanners.

What I didn't like about Bitdefender is although the AV is top class, the renewal process is very aggressive and they will charge full price automatically if not set up very carefully.

VoodooShield is very under rated, although on the surface it appears to be just another form UAC, it's far more intelligent as it links to Virus Total and it's own DB. Once trained it's pretty much silent, nothing malicious can be installed as if it does not meet the apps internal requirements or the user accepts. To me it's a smarter way as the app is far lighter, doesn't need to scan, nor will zero day exploits pass it.

I also use (infrequently) Sysinternals excellent Process Explorer & Autoruns as that too can link to Virus Total so I can check for any malicious process and/or auto-start. I'm always connected via a fast VPN which adds another level of security & anonymity.

I dropped Malwarebytes as I don't think it's so useful now. Since becoming a paid app far more intrusive, and a little academic with VoodooShield blocking all.

n.b. The Kaspersky link will auto LD KVRT

how do you change the fn key around with ctrl key? that is one of the major things i dont like with this keyboard!!! why did they do this?!?!?

Even for syncs stuff on Dropbox? Does not sound very impressive.
How so? It can mean that Dropbox is programmed in a way that it demands all the CPU time it can get when synchronizing if the computer has not a lot to do.
Your conclusion seems premature since this has nothing to do with hardware, but with how much CPU processing is asked by software.

Thanks. So
Why are you unimpressed?

On my 2010 MBP, syncing files with dropbox did not cause fan noise.

That's due to Apple allowing the CPU to run at far higher temperatures before the fans spool up, typically 80C plus. PC OEM's will tend start increasing fan speed around 60C/70C.

The last model I used was 2014 rMBP 15". Are latest models getting hotter?

Yes as the 15" now has hex core CPU's and IMO inadequate cooling, performance is therefore thermally limited. ASUS switched a lot of it's ROG line to 12V fans and increased cooling capacity for this reason, equally ROG is all about performance.

A better way to put it is they don't get any hotter, they do get hotter faster and need to reduce CPU/GPU frequency as a direct result. Once the CPU hits 100C it's all downhill, until the load reduces and the cooling system can catch up.

This is why Lenovo didn't opt for the i9 option for it's thin & light ThinkPad's as it's waste of time, more importantly it's customers money, given the chassis is incapable of cooling the CPU. Apple likely saw it as an opportunity for bigger numbers to draw greater margin, knowing full well the chassis would never cope with such a brutal CPU...

Newer W10 notebooks are passing 1300CB, you'd need to buy an iMac Pro to pass this with a Mac o_O

Apple should have stuck with; Entry Level, Ultra Portable, Mainstream & Pro/Prosumer Macs, not convert everything into variations of the MacBook Air, with questionable design & usability decisions. Terrible decision for many working professional's especially the reliability aspect, hence the exodus...

Situation is only likely to get worse with 9th Gen CPU's as they will have up to 8 cores, lower base frequencies, requiring higher Turbo clocks. Pointless to have a notebook that on paper can approach 5GHz, yet in real world use can only hold such speeds for a fraction of a second, then roll back performance to mediocre levels...
