No, the key is stored in the BIOS, you won't be promptedDo i need to buy another windows 10 key if i do a fresh install as memory serves me, you need to input a windows 10 key when you do a clean install and because these laptops come pre installed. what are my options?
ahh great ok cool so just install the iso into a usb stick, boot the laptop through there and away i go? does the key stay in the bios permenently? as i will have to do this again potentially when i order my 2tb drive? No, the key is stored in the BIOS, you won't be prompted
Samsung NVMe driver used to introduce system crashes, it was maybe two years ago, not sure how that looks like now. I'm using only what Microsoft supplies ever since.Might just need a driver update for Samsung directly.

infact scracth that i can just clone the drive !
Well, here are my results. But bare in mind, I have more then 10 apps open at the moment, don't really want to close them off. And my unit comes with 1TB of storage (P981).
My fans spin for no reason sometimes but that was during installing windows 10 and installing other stuff on it.Any improvement on fan noise after BIOS 1.19 update?

Are you on 1.19?My fans spin for no reason sometimes but that was during installing windows 10 and installing other stuff on it.
How are you temps? I have my laptop optimized for better battery (as opposed to better performance), and with that tuning, I'm easily living in the 50 to 60c range with hard work pushing the temps in the 70c range. I was posting in another thread and I wondered if my cooler temps are unusal and/or a result of my tuning or also the better thermal design of the thinkpadMy fans spin for no reason sometimes but that was during installing windows 10 and installing other stuff on it.
its hovering around 80c atmAre you on 1.19?
So far, I've not seen any complaints with 1.19, I suppose at some point I'll be taking the plunge

also: how do u get this to work? https://github.com/cjbdev/TPFanControl there is no .exe file to download off of this? just a code repository...
I'm not pushing a 4k monitor and that might help explain the temp differences. I frequently have about 5 chrome tabs open, Excel, and a couple of other appsI also have my x1e connected to a 4k display using usb c thunderbold 3.
I've been fairly stable with -140mV on both the cpu and cpu cache.edit: just tried undervolding to around -130v and temps only went down slightly from 80's to mid 70's.
Here's what I did, install the original TPFancontrol, downloaded the githhub version and then as noted by @c0ppo grabbed the exe from the debug folder. I renamed that to the original exe that was installed and rebooted. The new version is working well but since my temps are in the 50s/60s my fans are not cycling up. I would think seeing mid 70s, you would want the fans running.also: how do u get this to work? https://github.com/cjbdev/TPFanControl there is no .exe file to download off of this? just a code repository...
Does using 4k monitor strain the cpu or something?
Ok it's off the mains and it's quiet now. Watching a 4k YouTube video. Mind you my thunderbolt 3 USB c is charging the laptop lol.@hajime I think noted a similar phenominom, i can't say for sure, but the GPU may be working harder to drive the 4k monitor and the internal display. I can't say for sure but if you're seeing temps in the 60s w/o the monitor and 70-80 with it. I think its pretty conclusive.
Take it off the mains and see what happens to the temps when driving a 4k monitor on battery. If the temps are better, then there may be relief in the form of other configuration changes.
edit: hovering between 60-70 sometimes! im gunna try see what happens when i watch a youtube video

I've got some thermal paste here and will sort it out later. Did you remove the old paste using alcohol and a cotton bud or cotton pads?I had the same thing. It's thermal paste 99%. After I replaced mine, my CPU temps want way below that. I'm averaging with 50-55c now, even when connected to three 2K monitors.
Nope. But it does strain the GPU. That's why repasting cpu&gpu helps. And helps a lot.
