I have tinnitus from my military days. High pitched tone in both ears 24/7. I will never hear coil whine. So one less thing for me to put up with. But I can imagine in a quiet room it can be quite a distraction to the user.

I'm very sorry to hear that. Several months in the proximity of a whining GTX 1070 left me with ringing and pain (and only a partial recovery) but for some reason my high tone sensitivity wasn't affected. A medical view indicated that is due to irritation, and I now have to avoid anything which precipitates it - hence my immediate decision to return my X1E (even though the whine isn't overly loud).

It's nowhere near as bad as your situation, which must be awful for you. Even having it mildly can be quite depressing at times. My husband developed tinnitus in one ear due to the headset he has to wear in his job, and the endless conference calls. It's left him really miserable. It seems to be a condition which employers pay no heed to, yet it blights the life of the sufferer.

loving this laptop!

such a beast!!! wow
Yeah, I'm extremely happy with the laptop as well. No machine is perfect, and there are certain niggly things that can annoy on occasion but overall this is a beast and I'm really happy with it.

My only complaint is how do I remove the Intel Core i7 sticker on the lower left hand corner

uhh? i removed that the day i got it with ease!!!

My sticker seems really really difficult to remove, it does not want to let go
I put mine on my phone. My boss saw it and asked what a beast of a phone I have running an i7 lol

Just peel it off. Sooner the better, because it will leave a mark more it stays on. Rest of your laptop color will change over time, but not the part where there is a sticker.

I removed mine on day one. Ugly and not needed on a laptop.

I finally got it off, I think they used super glue because it was on there to stay

My returned X1E has arrived at its destination so hopefully I won't have to wait too long for the refund, then I can order the replacement.

I would guess ordering from Lenovo directly again would be the best way, despite the waiting times. They appear to have a no quibble return policy if there are any issues. Unlike retailers (I'm in the UK) who despite the distance selling regulations appear to be very resistant to a refund or exchange on laptops - they will put you through a long period of 'in house fault analysis' before returning the item several weeks later if they deem it is not faulty. You can of course return it within 14 days if it is unused.

I'm based in London myself. I order most stuff on amazon. You can return anything before a year

Yes, I usually prefer Amazon for that reason. Unfortunately they don't sell this computer through themselves - only via marketplace resellers (without Amazon fulfilment and hence no Amazon standard terms).

Well I bit the bullet, and applied Bios update 1.19, and it went smoothly.

If you recall, I went against my typical philosophy and applied the update prior to my trip and of course the update hung. It was a scary time, as I couldn't reboot and it was spinning there. Googling, I found a possible solution by taking the battery out.

I figured, if there was going to be a problem applying the bios, I better find out sooner then later. Thankfully, the application went smoothly, I chose to reboot my PC, take all the peripherals off, maybe that helped, or maybe applying 1.18 was an aberration but I ran in to zero problems.

So how is the thermal/fan of yours after the update?

Hey guys,

I went overboard with the upgrading of my XPS 15, and then some. :)

I upgraded the M.2 SSD to a Samsung EVO 970, upgraded the RAM to 32 GBs, and the wireless card to an Intel 9260 (the killer cards Dell uses are notoriously bad).

Additionally, I dismantled and cleaned off the heatsink and put on some fresh thermal paste. I couldn't believe how terrible of a job the factory does - there was so much! I used MX-4 over Kryonaut because Thermal Grizzly states Kryonaut starts to break down when it gets 80 degrees celsius or hotter. I'll take the longevity of MX-4 over a degree or two cooler any day. Additionally, I put three layers of thermal pads from the heatsink next to the fans as far away as the CPU + GPU I could go, and on some of the board that notoriously gets hot, making the entire bottom aluminum panel a giant heatsink. You can see that in the photos.

Now, with Thermalstop undervolting my CPU, and my computer repasting, my computer is 8-9 degrees cooler under the Prime95 torture test, this is even more impressive as it is running at even higher clock speeds.

My temps in general are like this:

Factory Thermal paste, no undervolting: 96 - 97 degrees celsius, consistent throttle to 3.2 FID, 3.0ghz

Factory Thermal paste, undervolting: 94 - 95 degrees celsius, consistent throttle to 3.4 FID, 3.2ghz

Improved Thermal paste, undervolting: 88 - 90 degrees celsius, consistent throttle between 3.4 FID, 3.2ghz and 3.6 FID, 3.6ghz

I'm sure many of you with the X1 Extreme can have similar results - the XPS 9570 and X1 Extreme are such similar devices. Have any of you tried this yet?

I guess ok, in all honesty I've largely stopped watching the temps. The fans kick on less and the initial fan speed seems a bit slower as it seems quieter. I noticed in playing Age of Empires (not a very stressing game), the fans barely kicked on.

Edit: Let me just add that the X1E, isn't going to run cooler, but rather warmer, because lenovo changed the heuristics of fan operation. It now kicks in later and as I mentioned, I think it runs a tad slower initially. With the laptop performing the same way, and having them change the fans to run later means it will run warmer. Like i said, I'm not really tracking or measuring it much any more. I'm more or less using it.

Believe it or not, I've done enough research and it seems to indicate that there's no much difference in temps with really bad thermal paste applications and various methods to apply it. The major difference comes in the quality of the product, not how well or poorly it was applied.

That’s interesting Maflynn. I knew there was t too much of a difference when it comes to method, but would have thought otherwise when it comes to amount.

Either way, everyone says Kryonaut is the best quality you can get before going to liquid metal, but I didn’t want to risk it when it comes to how long they last... Kryonaut is a thermal grease, not a thermal paste and their own spec sheet says maximum heat of 80 degrees Celsius, which is a bummer.

Here's one video of a number that I came across that debunks the myth that too much is really bad. Now there are situations where too much can be bad, particularlly with electrically conductive thermal paste but by and large it doesn't matter.

Skip to 7:46 to see the results.

I plan on dropping my X1E next monday, since I need it this week. Will use my mac mini in the time that I'm without my X1E. But however it goes, I should have purchased the 4K model. Difference between my screen and the one I've tried out is huge. Like using a 10 year old laptop screen vs new premium 2019 laptop.

Well, I got my laptop back. They have changed fans completely, so I got new fans. But not just that, I got a new bottom plate. They won't admit it, but I can tell, since I scratched mine on 2 occasions, and those scratches are gone. One scratch was almost 1cm long, so it's not hard to spot.

Using it the whole day, and well, fans are finally behaving like normal! They almost never turn on.

But other then that, speaking to an employee, I complained about the low brightness screen. Just casual talk, but he mentioned that he could order 4K display for my X1E, but that I would have to pay for it. If I let them keep my screen, they will charge me about 1500HRK (about 250$) for it. I said go for it, order it ASAP.

So all in all, a great experience! Only problem is that I will have to wait for my screen for at least 10 days. But I don't mind, because I didn't even thought that was possible to do!

Now I will have almost a new laptop :D

That is really cool that you can upgrade the display. That kind of solves some "buyers remorse" on the original display. It will be money well spent to be happy with the new display :)

Which primes test is this? Small FFT, large FFt or blended? And did you remove the power limit or are you limited to 45W?

Blended. No power limits - hitting about 56 Watts. I've done it with the Small FTT - that hits about 91 - 92 degrees, large FFt hits about 91 - 90, and Blended hits 88 - 90. I'd like to see some results from X1e owners to compare.

The settings I'm able to get are posted in the pictures. Proven reliable thus far. I was recommended by the actual creator of Throttlestop to set my Speedshift EPP to 80, and not to limit the Turbo Clock.

Sorry for the potato video quality. And also, while the fans do get quite loud, that video makes it sound way louder than it is.
