I'm pleased with the review, it confirms that this is a solid laptop. Temps continue to be an issue with the 8750H chips. The keyboard is as expected very good. I was surprised that Lisa was only getting 6 hours out of it. My Razer was getting less but I was able to tweak the power settings to improve that. I will say that I give Apple credit, as I get great battery life out of the MBP

Yes, at least it does not have the level of thermal issues that MBP2018 usrs complained when they first came out. Hope somebody could figure out a way to Hackintosh it.

Those thermal issues are a thing of the past, I'm very happy with how my MBP is working

Mayflynn explains it. You have 4 default power settings under the power slider when on battery and those 4 settings can be further tweaked. If you have it set to max performance expect about 4. The two middle settings will get you between 6-7, battery saver you can get up to 8, but Lisa probably is using it in “better performance” rather than “best performance”. Better performance is the default until it hits 20%. But you can manually override that with the power setting slider if you don’t need the performance and stretch the battery.

I would never make the claim that Lenovo told you of 13.5 or whatever it was though. That’s never going to happen

And of course it all depends on what you are doing and how much you are using the Intel graphics vs Nvidia

Who knows. I had a 2018 MBP that kept ramping up to 95-100c and would stay there, but of a few I had, it’s the only one that did it. Stuff happens I guess. Return it and get another if it does?

While on public transportations and most of the time at school, just basic productivity, web browsing and some short youtube video watching. Intel graphics should do well. Don't want to bring an AC adapter so long battery life is desired.

In the near future, at home and perhaps sometimes at school, develop machine learning models so Nvidia GPU is needed. When that happens, I need a charger since I will be doing computationally intensive work.
 
Has anyone gotten their X1 Extreme and can answer a few questions for me? I’m seriously considering this as a gaming/work laptop. I know the RAM and SSD are upgradeable, but I’m interested in slot capacity. Is their 2 or 4 DDR4 slots? On the M2 sled, is it ready to accept a second M2, or are there adapters/parts missing. I want to get the 4K touch version, but want to be able to upgrade to 64gb of RAM and 2x 2TB SSDs in RAID 0. The Lenovo site only sells the dual SSD and 64GB on the non 4K version.

*Note, think I see only 2 RAM slots, where on earth can I source a 32x2 kit, lol.

It has 2 slots, so the 64GB is “future upgradability”

There are two sleds and it is ready to accept a second M2. A guy on the Lenovo forum just added a 970 Pro 2TB, so it would appear it will address 4TB, despite them claiming 2TB from what I recall.

Bottom cover pops off with 7 of those safety screws that don’t fall out. No weird tabs or anything.

Also, Samsung lists the production status of these modules as “Mass Production” at the bottom of the page, but as far as I can tell they cannot be found anywhere.

Actually, they are already available. But they will COST you.
Samsung has them, and Lenovo ships already with 64GB of RAM. But I don't speak from personal experience, just info that is available on thinkpad subreddit.

So it does under the customize your own configuration. That is new. Before it only allowed you to chose up to 32GB. Good find for those who need it :)
 
I personally think the fingerprint issue is small fry compared to the issues the new MBPs have.
I am waiting for NotebookCheck to drop their review on the FHD panel after which I will make plans for my MBP 2015.

Lenovo is known to cheap out on the FHD panels.

Exactly, I'm rather of the school of thought that notebooks are designed to be used first and foremost, not admired. If the latter is applied as the primary design focus what you get is the MBP a heavily compromised product that looks amazing, yet equally flawed...

True, however your significantly reducing the CPU's performance which wont work for everyone. Think it's only fair to state it's accomplished by a 3rd party solution that will reduce performance to keep the MBP running cool & calm.

Actually I've been using Volta less and less as I noticed that my thermals have been much better after the second supplemental update. I'm running w/o Volta right now and on light work I'm hovering in the 50c range.

Want your hex core to run cooler and extend a little battery life, you should have a look at ThrottleStop as the new 8th Gen CPU's can really benefit from being undervolted.

ThrottleStop is free and only requires a little work to understand, with numerous guides across the Web. Undervolting the CPU there is nothing to loose, and everything to gain, although one should not alter Turbo Power Limits unless you understand these parameters.

nb. Windows OEM's only, Apple thoughtfully locked the VID's on the 2016 Mac's onwards :rolleyes:

To me, most of the things about MBP after 2015 is bad. I would rather buy a 2015 rMBP.

No as each processor is literally unique, however there are plenty of guides on YouTube. In my experience setting both CPU Core & Cache to -100mV should be a safe bet with an 8th Gen Hex core.

If you reduce the offset voltage too much the system will lock up or Blue Screen, just needs to be backed off a little. My own hex core notebook is stable as deep as -160mV, equally as a primary system it's more prudent to run the undervolt less aggressively with Core & Cache voltage of -140mV.

For my needs the undervolt helps with battery runtime as the notebook only uses a dGPU, cooling & performance is not the issue as it's designed for sustained loads. ThrottleStop is one of those applications the more you read and try, the more benefit you can get out of it. Nothing but respect for the Dev as is free with no strings attached.

Thanks. I ordered a X1E with 4K screen, 32GB and 1TBSSD. The CPU is i7-8850H 6 core processor with vPro.

I have both my CPU Core and Cache set to -125mV currently and it seems to be working well and stable. I forgot all about having set these when there was an earlier discussion about battery life.

Which backpack/bag do existing X1E users recommend? Shall I get one for 14" or 15" laptop? I want a lightweight and protective one along with microfiber-like soft material inside the laptop compartment. I guess backpack is better since in my city people always bump into my bag.

Bags are a bit of a personal thing, but if you travel a lot the “TSA/Flight friendly bags and backpacks can make life a little easier at the airport.

As far as 14/15. You will still probably need 15” for the X1E, but check the bags dimensions
