Folks don't confuse ThinkPad's with Lenovo's run of the mill consumer grade hardware,. More often than not you'll retire a ThinkPad due to the hardware being superseded not due to the machine failing. They run forever and you can repair everything as they are real professional hardware...

Q-6
I have seen this happen far too many times in the corporate world. My IT department recently had a garage sale for Thinkpad T420s - around 55 of them - sold for anywhere between 50-100$ a piece! :D

These machines were used for over 7 years (I think) and they still were I great shape. Many of my colleagues bought it as Linux machines for their kids. On that note, I remember seeing my Dad's retired Thinkpad T60 in my nephew's toy bunker. That damn thing still boots Win XP!

While my last thinkpad, had an ibm logo on it, the thing was a tank. Nothing would kill it, and from what I've read Lenovo has kept up the great build quality and also the keyboard is great.

My X1E will arrive soon. What do I need to do besides checking physical damages?

use it and don't sweat the small stuff.

No computer is perfect, if it does the everything you require don't worry about some of the niggling issues.

Check for physical damage. I always do a keyboard check to make sure the keys work as expected and also I check out the display, Bluetooth, WiFi etc.

The only other thing I would do is run the Lenovo Vantage App to check for any BIOS updates.

For DIY PC, people suggested not to update the BIOS unless something is not working. How about the Thinkpad?

Update it. It is a new product and there have been a couple of updates to address various things and should be a 3rd one soon that addresses some lagging with docks. It’s an issue they are aware of and should be addressing any day

I would agree with the DIY PC folks if it is a product that has been on the market for awhile and isn’t still being tweaked for teething problems. But being a new product, still a couple of things being addressed.

Hi, I am setting up the machine. First time Windows 10 user. It asked "Link your phone and PC". Could you please let me know what that does after I link the two devices? After I entered my phone number, I got a message on my phone asking me to install an app. No idea what that is and what it will do. Could you please let me know?

Next, it asks "Make Cortana your personal assistnat? ... Can I have permission to use the info I need to do my best work?" Is this a trick question to collect personal information? Is it advisable to say yes or no? Cortana may be fun but if it consumes a fair amount of battery life (does it?), I have to disable it.

If you are in doubt choose 'no' for now. You can change the settings to all installation questions afterwards in Windows settings.

The App should be “Continue on my PC”

It works a bit like Apples Handoff, though not as polished since it is made to be generic with different brands of phone. I know the new version of Windows has supposedly increased functionality with Android phones, but I don’t have one, so not sure how.

I did opt for Cortana and like how it works on both my computer and iPhone. It also works with Lenovo where you can use voice commands to control certain features on your laptop such as keyboard lighting and sleep/wake

Never heard of Apples Handoff. I heard of Google Handoff though.

Cortana's voice is not sexy. Is there a library of voices to choose from?
[doublepost=1539392699][/doublepost]I tried the X1E today. Keyboard is nice, trackpad is nice, the screen is nice. My only two complains are: 1) fingerprints everywhere even I washed my hand before using it and 2) jet engine fan.

The AC adapter is a bit heavy though.

On the internet, somebody mentioned that if the laptop is plugged into an AC outlet, windows switches to performance mode and this could cause noisy fan. Others suggested giving it a few days to adjust. Do you guys have this issue?

Apple Handoff:

Cortana: No, the voice of Cortana on the PC is voiced by Jen Taylor, just as it is in the Halo Games

Fan noise: click the battery icon and move the power slider from a best performance to better performance when you don’t need it and you will rarely hear the fan.

That sounds right. It is a painted matte surface and like any painted matte surface, oils and stuff will eventually build up and cause some shinny spots. It doesn't happen readily, but you do notice it most in the areas you are in frequent contact with. Most notably the palm rests. It does wipe off easily. Mostly even with a dry microfiber. When that doesn't work a slightly dampened one or using a tiny bit of dish soap when you dampen it.

Another product that works well with is a very light spray is Chemical Guys Meticulous Matte Detailer on a microfiber. I wouldn't recommend buying it just for that purpose, but I did happen to already have some on hand for the matte finish of a motorcycle. It is made for matte, satin and other non-gloss finishes.

Is Chemical Guys Meticulous Matte Detailer on a microfiber the best method? Even after using the X1E on the first day for less than 2 hours, I already see marks everywhere.

Its a nice machine, but man alive some of the configurations are $$$$. If this was out when I went to buy my laptop (or I dilly-dallied longer), I would definitely have bought this machine.

I'm content with my MBP, but this looks more robust, sturdy and will last longer then the MBP

The crazy thing is that you can always find sales on them. Have you ever used the browser extension called Honey? Honey constantly finds 20% coupons for them. Up until the 10th they had a code ThinkpadXSale that was good for 20% savings, current code is Thinkpadsav20.

They also of course do the Student/Teacher discount as well as AARP I think? But those are all 15% as opposed to the 20%

you calling me old

:p

Hahaha. No, I have no idea how old you are. I just happened to see it as an option. But more people qualify for that discount than many would think. I believe you only need to be 50+ to qualify. :)

But of course their 20% rotating coupon is the better bet or maybe the bundle deals they do if your planning on the extra coverages.

Don't worry, I'm old :p

I'll take any discount, maybe if they have a killer black friday sale, I'll be tempted to buy this and sell my MBP. The issue, is that the MBP is running well, I have no complaints, and I'll take a hit money wise selling it and then buying another machine. Besides my wife and kids would kill me, even though they don't use this machine.

Matte is always sensitive to that. I don’t know if you have ever owned a matte car or motorcycle, but they are sensitive to contaminates that can build up and make them shiny in spots, such as finger prints, road grime, etc.

The Chemical Guys Matte Detailer is a spray cleaner and sealant that will remove dust, fingerprints and in the case of vehicles road grime, soap and wax buildup, etc. It also has UV protection to help prevent fading.

I already had a 1 gallon bottle for a motorcycle, not sure I would buy it otherwise. But I figured I would try it on the Lenovo since it said was safe for sensitive matte surfaces including vinyl wraps, but I am sure Lenovo doesn’t actually recommend it. So use at your own risk.
